They did say it was a nine-figure electric pole… premium German engineering ;-)

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

That would avoid the use of fossil fuels :-)

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah… I guess people have tossed chains on other high voltage installations to cause self-destruction. We might be talking ”burned” a bit to literally?

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

Love it. When they announced they were getting out of the handset market years ago I figured they were nuts. Now their equipment replaces china’s while they seemingly now manufacture licensed knockoffs of Nokia’s old handsets 🤯

Someone at Nokia is getting the Bond Villain of the Year award 🤔

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

Sure… it was more that they chose to pull out around the start of the smart phone revolution. It seemed foolish at the time. I’m not actually implying they had a master-plan, just joking around a bit.

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

I wasn’t really going for a point… and I suspect I was looking at some kind of odd knockoff based on what you said about the handsets. Shopping for something with a keypad to pacify my aging father I ran across this (New and Original Nokia 6300 4G)[ a.aliexpress.com/_mON9HOK]. Which triggered some latent memory of Nokia licensing their handset business to someone, and here we are.

It does read a bit like something that should be on a bronze plaque somewhere.

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

I knew they made other consumer electronics but I had no idea about the boots. That’s a delightfully wholesome origin story :-)

Are they really struggling? I’m sure the margins are much better on carrier grade telecom equipment. I don’t think Huawei is going to mourn the loss, but this is probably a huge deal for Nokia.

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

Chainsaw resistant boots! The zombie apocalypse accessory I did not know I needed until just now. Thank you friend :-)

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

Well… now I’m glad I didn’t bother trying to scrub my data off the site ;-)

Never really bought the notion that they weren’t backing it all up.

But I gotta say thank you for helping to make Reddit great! The only thing I still regret is not trying harder to contribute when I was enjoying the site.

@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

You don’t seem to be looking for the answer coldbrew, but it’s coldbrew.

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

That’s the neat part, all you need is a big jar, 24 hours in the fridge and filter patiently… the filtering isn’t really slow but you usually make a bunch.

Ratio of coffee to water is really the only tweak you can make. I used to use a whole 14OZ bag at a time and I’m not sure how much water anymore… I just used the same large glass jar every time, so there was more eyeball than measure.

It’s a very forgiving method, you can leave it in for 48+ hours, but 24 is the minimum. Once you filter it it’s good in the fridge for a week.

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not sure if it’s the same brand but we’ve got a slick one too… not a bad way to go if you end up liking it. Just wanted to give OP a way to try it out without waiting for more gear ;-)

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

You know… it’s never actually occurred to me to try, but it certainly should be. Various vendors sell concentrated cold brew and I doubt they are doing it with a vacuum.

Try it out and let us know?

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

Isn’t that what the Flipper Zero is for ;-) Kia notwithstanding it’s not that easy. But the relay attacks have been around since at least 2018 and I suspect years longer.

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

So does not leaving your keys by the front door… not that I follow my own advice :-)

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

I’m just banking on my car being the least fancy in my complex ;-)

Keyless entry sounds stupid and I’ve totally mocked people for being “to lazy to turn a key.” But pushbutton start makes my slow little Subaru feel like a race car :-)

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve seen a few low res clips over the years… one did use a yagi (Christmas tree looking one?). I’m sure it’s possible, but I don’t think it’s actually a given. I’m not even expert adjacent on this one though 😅

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

Also a microwave isn’t a good Faraday cage… at least not mine ;-)

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, someone got confused with all the terminology. Probably also old people think small stuff with a screen looks like a gameboy?

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

Yes.

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

Is this a joke, hyperbole? To build on your example, what if I wanted to find out “how to disable Windows 11 update prompts” into lemmy’s search. Do you think I would get the answer I’m looking for?

I’m not saying I don’t want to be rid of google and all they do. I would pay for 10 proton mail accounts a month if just one of googles data centers spontaneously burst into flames right now!

Well I’m willing to wait a while longer… I have not tried Kagi yet, but I will as soon as I get bored with Midjourney. Hopefully someday we can collectively slip the yoke, but I suspect googles results will get a lot worse first.

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

So one bot watches and another posts, possibly from an established account farmed with real human labor.

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

100% true, the quality of search results has plummeted. I’ve read lots of articles that propose a myriad of excuses, but at the end of the day Google could fix it if they wanted to. Google search has the quality of free popcorn.

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

Sure, there’s some good free popcorn out there. It’s just not that common. It wasn’t a great analogy, but I’m sticking with it ;-)

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t know… I guess I’m not as holy as I once believed? I talk… well I suppose it’s at my computer all the time. I’d be annoyed if it responded though. Maybe even annoyed enough to smack it…

…NORAD will continue to track and monitor the balloon," NORAD said in a statement. “The FAA also determined the balloon posed no hazard to flight safety.”

One U.S. official told CBS News the balloon was expected to be over Georgia by Friday night. The official said the balloon appeared to be made of Mylar and had a small cube-shaped box, about two feet long on each side, hanging below it. Its origins and purpose remain unknown.

Also the FAA: If you want to fly your DIY drone at a local park we’d really appreciate if you put a GPS transponder on it and register your name/address with us….

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

They did say it had a 2 foot by something box dangling beneath it… I’m assuming they’re calling it safe because it’s above some standard altitude.

Don’t actually know anything about radar tracking or high altitude ballooning :-)

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

I’m thinking a partnership with the Sharper Image™ folks they really staged a strong comeback this year!

I’ll take my bonus in cash ;-)

@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

Definitely, I always ball mine up before tossing it so it’s a virtual certainty that man guys have handled my balls. I know it’s not everyone’s preference, they say you should just wash off the sheet, scrape off any large chunks and then lay it in the bin flat… I assume this is so they can easily tell if they are really just my balls or if someone might have hidden something like a half eaten burrito in one of their balls, which if I’m being honest, I have occasionally done but if that’s the case then I toss my balls in the trash can and not the recycling bin. I’m not some kind of monster! Nobody needs a load of rancid sour cream all over their hands just for trying to handle my balls.

It occurs to me that I really don’t know how many guys work in the recycling industry… it’s even possible the same guys have handled both our balls! Maybe there is someone with a weird fettish, and he takes a few balls home from work every day and his apartment is just full of other people’s balls… like, if you think about it —which I obviously do— there’s a non-zero possibility that our balls are touching right now and neither of us would ever really know.

Wow… that was a bit exhausting, I’m spent! I will be going to sleep soon and I will dream of balls all night long.

Good night friend. Hopefully I have answered your question.

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

You’re to kind. The insane ramblings of an insomniac ;-)

sramder ,

I have been doing it wrong this whole time! Oops 😬

@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

Reddit now openly collects and sells user data.

With Sam Altman as shareholder #4 I think we got sold out long ago. The only real surprise is that Reddit got some compensation…

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

You really need two for a decent coffee table, so no ;-)

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

I’m thinking G4 under a sheet of thick glass asymmetrically balanced with the G3 weighing down the short end… probably have to fill the G3 with cement or something though ;-)

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

You mean that’s not the homeless guy?

I too believe the youths are destroying our glorious language… look at the stately meme, reduced to this confusing image. We must start over with Esperanto!

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

Why Esperanto? Or the whole comment?

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

DeepFriedMemes makes sense now!

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

To be honest, I kind of just pulled it out of my ass because the whole comment was a joke.

I don’t really know that much about Esperanto other then the notion that by creating a new language all mankind could be unified and peaceful. This seems hopelessly utopian to me, but also compelling and delightful… so it’s always bouncing around in the back of my mind.

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

Good talk bud.

sramder , (edited )
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

Congratulations Lemmy we are now statistically significant 🥹

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

Ah… I see.

Well hopefully democracy doesn’t die in the shadows.

Perhaps we get 5-6 more folks after Thursday’s IPO announcement ;-)

What's a good phone now that doesn't force ads on me?

I’m using a Pixel 6 Pro right now, and I’m looking around to see if there are any good phones. However, I have heard that there are ads in the newer flagship phones (Samsung, Xiaomi). I am willing to spend around USD$750 on a new phone, but I just don’t want any crazy ads or preinstalled apps like Facebook. Are there...

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah… this is where the “play one on TV” part comes in. This is the standard explanation for why they don’t support call recording, but it’s always felt like it was missing something to me 🤔

I wasn’t aware that it was standard functionality everywhere else… now I like my country even less! There have even been a handful of (usually paid) services that try to get around it; running the speakerphone and audio recorder simultaneously was my favorite, but there were subscription VoIP solutions with call recording, $80 Bluetooth answering device with onboard recording.

Either Samsung has a compelling legal reason, a clearly identified financial incentive, or they would just rather make more bloat nobody wants? Is it Google? Have they locked all US phones… can’t be because people import them occasionally.

IDK… I’d love to hear theories.

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

I’ll give it a look. I generally just use Firefox and uBlock when I have a choice.

I’m running Techtinium right now for DNS privacy, any killer features in NextDNS that made you pick it?

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

I’ll second that in a heartbeat. It’s not just the obvious stuff either, much of the inobvious refinement is just gone. I hated Apple for years because their UIs were offensive and the thought of a single mouse button seemed convicted for the feeble minded… but I came to really appreciate the small refinement, common actions requiring minimum input. It’s hard to be specific without getting to esoteric, but the primary input field always having focus is the one that on my mind constantly.

For example I navigate somewhere with maps, hit end navigation, it’s now 3 clicks to get back to a search field and type the next destination… not a lot of work, but that’s coming from 0 clicks.

I would happily go on, but I sound like a cranky graybeard already and we’re supposed to be finding you a decent phone ;-)

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

Word :-)

I actually have, but even with the device rooted and buttonmappers special ADB command run somehow, and only sometimes, Netflix creeps into the task switcher.

The button reliably launches Plex every time, so as far as I’m concerned it works just fine.

Someone suggested uninstalling the Netflix app and I’m sure that would sort out the last bit of it. But I was actually still using Netflix :-)

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

Weird. Got to be some financial motivation then. I’m going to research it more now that I know it’s a stock option in some markets… Thanks :-)

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

Oh okay, that’s pretty cool. I don’t think Techtinium can do per-device settings at all, and (obviously) only works on my home WiFi. And the bulk of the DNS requests are just passed to cloudflare, so it’s better than using my ISP, but only by a bit.
