Unions work. This is awesome.

some_guy , to news in NYPD union sues Adams administration over new ‘zero tolerance’ policy on steroid use among cops

Their tiny cop brains can’t compete with the contradictions. I gotta say, I like seeing conflict between these two parties.

some_guy , to technology in The Dangerous Rise of GPS Attacks

Beyond the Baltics, war zone areas around Ukraine and the Middle East have also seen sharp rises in GPS disruptions, including signal blocking meant to disrupt airborne attacks.

If the impact on uninvolved civilian aircraft isn’t enough to demand an end to these conflicts, I don’t think we’ll ever get our leaders to do anything.

This sounds like a job for James Cameron.

some_guy , to lemmyshitpost in Oddly specific question

There’s no question there. It’s a statement. And the second part mirrors the conditions set forth in Umberto Eco’s Ur Fascism.

some_guy , to technology in Microsoft’s VASA-1 can deepfake a person with one photo and one audio track

They mentioned one potential use that I thought has value and that I hadn’t considered. For video conferencing, this could transmit data without sending video and greatly reduce the amount of bandwidth needed by rendering people’s faces locally. I don’t think that outweighs the massive harms this technology will unleash. But at least there was some use that would be legit and beneficial.

I’m someone who has a moral compass and I don’t like that scammers will abuse this shit so I hate it. But there’s no keeping it locked away. It’s here to stay. I hate the future / now.

The eyes still have uncanny valley vibes, but that’s because I’m looking for it. If I wasn’t watching demo videos about generated video, I might not have noticed.

Their overlords want their constituents to remain uneducated and without critical thinking abilities. That’s what allows them to be so easily manipulated.

some_guy , to news in Fired Google workers ousted over Israeli contract protests file complaint with labor regulators

Raising your voice against unethical business practices should be protected. If my org started selling a device to turn people into soylent green, I’d want the ability to say no without having to quit an otherwise nice job or get arrested saying so. Not to mention, it’s Israel, genocide, and history will absolute view Google as war profiteers.

some_guy , to news in Black Kansas City teen Ralph Yarl sues white man who shot him for ringing the doorbell

Yeah, that part of the suit will fail. But I think it’s worth trying to expand the dragnet of responsible parties regardless. The more people at risk of going to jail for shootings, the more people might support gun control.

It isn’t the same as parents getting jailed for their kid’s mass shooting. But I kinda feel a little bit like it’s still worth trying just to increase a societal sense of culpability.

I hope this 84 year old piece of shit doesn’t die before this case concludes. Hard to believe it’s already been more than a year since this happened.
