smileyhead , to technology in Pressure grows on Apple to open up iMessage

I don’t want next-gen SMS. I want adoption of Internet based and democratic standard instead.

smileyhead , to technology in Ad blocker Cause Invalid Traffic For Content Creator on Youtube

I’m fine with ads (if they are bearable) or paying for a service. As long I can use the service without running propietary programs.

I don’t want to give money for monopolistic video platform, requiring propietary program, runed by unfriendly tech giant that can turn knobs as they like on what big chunk of the world sees.

But we are talking about messaging standards, not messaging services.

I can’t agree. What is the thing that decentralized service cannot have?

Imagine theoretical Matrix client with Signal’s UI and Signal’s identity (phone number) resolution.

smileyhead , to fediverse in My list of services I still miss on the fediverse

What I think is also missing is Disqus alternative too comment on websites with Fediverse accounts. Wordpress has an ActivityPub plugin, but it would be great to have something like this on static sites or other CMS software too.

smileyhead , to technology in Google Allegedly Pays Over $18 Billion a Year to Be Apple’s Favorite Search Engine

Firefox solved this long time ago: …mozilla.org/…/change-your-default-search-engine-…

In desktop Firefox there is also a format in which webpage can inform it’s a search engine and the browser would list option to add it in the search selection (Firefox has a selector to choose search engine on each query if you want).

smileyhead , to technology in Google will now make passkeys the default for personal accounts

This is something different to PassKeys. “Sign in with Apple” is Apple telling online service “let him in”, while PassKeys is storing your authentication data on your device.

smileyhead , (edited ) to technology in Samsung joins Google in RCS shaming Apple

Whole situation reminds me of another one. When Google created their services to be unavailabe to install without root access, while Huawei locked their devices so device owner have no root access that Huawei has remotely.

Then people started blaming regulators for inability to have Play Store on Huawei branded phone, not questioning why blessing from device vendor to install an app is required in the first place.

smileyhead , to technology in Samsung joins Google in RCS shaming Apple

My big question is: Why does Apple need to adopt it in the first place?

Answer is: closed nature of system they created and closed (yes) nature of RCS ecosystem.

We should adopt user-friendly democratic operating systems and chat protocols instead.

smileyhead , to technology in Samsung joins Google in RCS shaming Apple

We live in this world. We can adopt such a protocol. The hardest step is to convience your friends to install an app that supports it, because duopoly named Googloid and Apple iOS is not going to make it simple.

But don’t work without Google account. Yet another the same app to install.

smileyhead , to technology in What Cloud storage solution do you swear to?

I use rsync.net, because they offer real cloud storage, not just an service+app to push and pull files.

You connect by Unix-native SSH, so you can mount this and use just like if you had a real disk in your computer. I even have some programs installed on it.

Technically it is possible to do it with services like Google Drive or Mega, but they require to use hacky bridges and are not as flexible.

smileyhead , to technology in Google will now make passkeys the default for personal accounts

You don’t need to export or know what is the key.

But is it possible in the implementation of Android/iOS?

Backups are a thing. With SSH keys I have different key for every device too, but as they are stored in an accessable file (as all computer data should be) they are backed up with the rest of the system.

smileyhead , to technology in Google will now make passkeys the default for personal accounts

Just an example of protocol different than HTTP.

smileyhead , to technology in Google will now make passkeys the default for personal accounts

I have a long list of questions about PassKeys and none of this articles explains them well enough.

  1. Does Android have it build in AOSP or Google Play Services?
  2. Would it be possible to actually see your private key on Android? Like export them to a file?
  3. Does they work without third party service? Can it be just me and the service I am logging in, or does it require my servers from PassKey provider (like Google, Bitwarden, 1Password) to work?
  4. Can it be used offline? For example, can an offline device create token that second online device could use for login? (Like TOTP codes).
  5. Does they work on other Internet services than the Web? In other words, does they work purely over HTTP and webviews or can they be in future used to login in for ex. SSH servers?
