@actuallyautistic The anger in me wants to start a fight when I go back to work in one week for one week at my old agency. I just want to tell my current manager the unvarnished truth about how much she sucks as a manager. The fact that I am going to have to put on an extra thick mask is going to lead me to exhaustion next week.

I just want to tell her to go fuck herself but that wouldn't be wise. As much as it chaps my ass, I am going to go in, be civil, and polite. She's going to pretend like she cares that I am doing better mentally and I am going to pretend to care about doing some work for her.

I am too old to do this childish game of pretend. I am entirely too old for it. Why must we have politics in the workplace? Why is it asking too much to be left alone? I just want my task(s) assigned to me and then to be left the fuck alone to get them done.

sal ,
@sal@brain.worm.pink avatar

@housepanther @j @actuallyautistic How many other people does she have managerial / hiring-firing power over? Have you been able to talk with any of them about these grievances to see if they have similar? The Emergency Workplace Organizing Committee does trainings on how to take collective action in hostile work environments https://workerorganizing.org/support/

sal ,
@sal@brain.worm.pink avatar

@housepanther @actuallyautistic @j Oh yeah state / public sector jobs can be tricky :/
In theory at least that's an environment where you also have some more protection against arbitrary firing?

If you’re an autistic person and you need to leave an event because of sensory overload/overwhelm: it is not a personal failure on your behalf, it’s an accessibility failure on their behalf.

If you are multiply disabled and can't access public spaces including the pharmacy or hospital for vital care, it is an accessibility failure by people like @AutisticAdam @actuallyautistic

so, we have two different groups now. @actuallyautistic and @allautistics. I understand that not all autistic people were there when the discussion took place, that resulted in the hashtag.
In short: A lot of NTparents took over the discussion and steered it in a direction that was toxic to autistic people themselves, talking over them, not with them in a massively ableist way. Promoting harmful stuff like ABA and the like. A lot of that took place on Twitter. Hence the tag to make sure we speak to each other, not to people that want to help us eradicate the autism from ourselves or any such nonsense.
To new people it sounds a bit exclusive though. Hence the hashtag, that plopped up. ActuallyAutistic is meant to be inclusive of all autistics, regardless whether they have a diagnose or whether they know for sure. As long as they are in it for themselves. And is also fine for people that want info and learn directly from the horses mouth, cus they have autistic loved ones, kids etc. (many blood related people are some kind of neurodivergent too, anyways, whether they know it or not). it says "actually" too exclude people that would be disrespectful towards Autstic people. That's all. But it's understandable that it does sound exclusive to some, without explanation. The new people are in that vulnerable phase where they question themselves a lot. Am I really autistic or am I just an imposter. If you haven't been diagnosed as a kid, you have probably had this phase and it can take years and maybe it never ends. I still have these moments of" Ohh whow, I actually have this trait also. It just looks different in me". Well . It always looks different. Cus we aren't all white males with stereotype autism and its highly individualized.There's a ton of autistic people running around that aren't diagnosed and probably never will be. Your chance at being diagnosed as a woman is maybe one in four, depending on where you live, your status, your skin color, your traits. Some traits are more often leading to diagnose than others. Imposter syndrome is the norm not the exception. That's why we often hear" if you wonder whether you are autistic or not, you most probably are". NT rarely wonder about this. And we've all been through this stage. And BTW no one cares if you change your mind or if you're insecure. It's absolutely fine. You're invited.
So. I think we should have one. having two is inconvenient. And most people still hang out in the ActuallyAutistic- one. So either you all feel invited or we think of a name, that includes both, the history and the new people that have arrived. Just sayin'. I know it's probably gonna solve itself by one of them attracting more people and then being the remaining one, but I just wanted to repeat about the history and I don't want new people to get confused over this. Just so you know: There was no disagreement. It's just a question of history moving on and flow of information from old to new not always being perfect. If we need a change of defining terminology that's fine, but let's not get confused or feel divided ok?
Maybe it's ok. to have two, maybe the AllAutistics helps find people that are in the same state of finding out. Whatever helps is fine. I'm just writing this out so no one has to feel confused or not welcome. And BTW, there is a reason why people write hashtags in CamelBack., that's much more readable to screenreaders. Love to you all.
Edit: I missed out on the hashtag and the @autisticme . Sorry folks.

@ahrimans_erbe @pathfinder @actuallyautistic your post about being autistic af seems like a statement or the obvious.

I don't really think allisics know anything about us anyway.

sal ,
@sal@brain.worm.pink avatar

@jrdepriest @CatHat @ahrimans_erbe @pathfinder @actuallyautistic Hey, I wonder - as I see this because it's posted to a group with all sorts of autistic people in it - if there's a better way to talk about people who were diagnosed autistic in the 1970s or earlier. Ideally, I think - we can let people who experienced that self-represent, listen to and seek out the evidence-of-their-lives. Or at least, we can avoid suggesting that anyone who that happened to "was not functional at all."

sal , to actuallyautistic
@sal@brain.worm.pink avatar

@markusl @actuallyautistic @allautistics Yeah I discussed how disabled and immunocompromized comrades' lives were being destroyed by eugenics and covid denialism, so ratfucker started this trolling about "get therapy." I don't feel the need to "be the bigger person" or whatever.

Hey Ratfucker, look, another post where disabled people are talking about how they're being harmed and gaslit. Oh no, we're being upity and non-civil.

Autistic people are often criticised for “reading too much into things” and “assuming” the worst, but usually what we deduce is highly accurate, thanks to our pattern-spotting and dot-connecting abilities. I think the real issue is we typically unearth truths others want to remain hidden.

@actuallyautistic

sal ,
@sal@brain.worm.pink avatar

@hollybrigstocke Yeah we can also free ourselves from seeing it as an "autism superpower" by seeing how numerous autistics @AutisticAdam @actuallyautistic
will still react with willful ignorance or hostility just like many allistic people when patterns like eugenics and shock doctrine politics are pointed out when they don't want to look at or think about them

OK, I'm a little reluctant to do this, but as you have shared my comment without context, this is what your post was in response to:

"@sal Well, I do seem to have rattled your cage.

I take no great pleasure from that.

I would reiterate that this has nothing to do with ableism or the pros and cons of mask wearing.

Rather it is about you focusing your hatred on one individual to the extent that you follow him around the fediverse harassing, persecuting and bad-mouthing him. That is not acceptable.

Realistically, I did not anticipate a positive reaction from you. But I have held back for a long time and felt it was time to say something.

In all likelihood I will now become the object of your hatred. I thought about that before I posted and decided I didn't care. I will read your posts until I get tired of them, then I will block you.

I really hope you get the help you need."

I have attached a screenshot showing some of the responses from Sal.

@pathfinder @hosford42 @ratcatcher @actuallyautistic @ratcatcher @ellenor2000 Cool, now put at least that much energy into calling out normalized behaviors that are actually killing real people.
I literally don't give a fuck about "being a bigger person" or whatever moralism.

sal , to actuallyautistic
@sal@brain.worm.pink avatar

@actuallyautistic We probably know better than anyone how "Get Help" is leveraged to gaslight us, when we speak about violence and abuse against us.

We are told "I Hope You Get The Help You Need" by people who are actively against us getting the help we need.

If the Help We Need is to speak about oppression and be believed, "I Hope You Get Help" means "I hope a therapist convinces you you're not being oppressed." People talking about police profiling get told to take antipsychotics.

If The Help We Need is URGENT, PHYSICAL HEALTHCARE where doctors aren't assaulting us or willfully giving us other deadly diseases in the exam room by refusing to follow basic safety measures - there's a chorus to sing "I Hope You Get Help!" "I hope you get bombarded or coerced or otherwise convinced not to bring that up anymore!"

Whether it's ABA or psychiatric drugging or talk therapy, we're surrounded by people who want to Make Sure We Get Help that will make us quiet about what's happening to us.

How have other people survived therapy and therapism?

sal , to actuallyautistic
@sal@brain.worm.pink avatar

@actuallyautistic How do you deal with the Toxic Positivity from people who insist that, just because people tell you to your face that your life is worthless and they're okay with hurting or killing you, you must be 'mature' by showing you don't 'resent' them for this?

This is what being a psychologist does to people I guess. But even if we refrain from seeing psychologists, they still find us in the wild sometimes. :(

sal OP ,
@sal@brain.worm.pink avatar

@shiri @actuallyautistic It's literally always the psychologists too. It's like super common for them to find me online just to tell me that it's immature to resent my comrades being killed by eugenics. And that the real crime is thinking that people who practice care for each other's safety are, in fact, better. I feel so bad for the people who are sent to see them with no choice or those who mistakenly put their trust in them as voluntary clients.

@sal@brain.worm.pink avatar

@grs @AutisticAdam @actuallyautistic Yeah and so many people still can't get disability income, even with diabetes, autoimmune conditions, etc, and are forced to work public-facing jobs that are endangering their lives. The constant psychic violence and physical danger of people reminding you every day that they don't care if you make it or not.

@sal@brain.worm.pink avatar

Hi @SimonFabianMueller - If you believe that adults should not resent their compatriots being needlessly killed, disabled, and pushed further into poverty through lost work time and medical debt, you have a terrifyingly shallow set of ethics. I do hope that's not what you believe. I do hope you don't believe that those who the most violence and harm consistently falls on should let others carry on in a privileged state of ignoring what's happening, spared from having to witness the banality of it all.

sal ,
@sal@brain.worm.pink avatar

Very interesting: @SimonFabianMueller just informed me that, just because people are telling me to my face that they're fine with killing people like me, that's NO EXCUSE for being 'RESENTFUL' of them!

Typical psychologist mindset. RIP.

sal ,

@SimonFabianMueller (I actually am better than people who kill disabled people. It's not hard. It's a choice about behavior.)

My job is fairly low-risk but I'm now housemates w someone who's pretty likely exposed to covid and other contagious diseases at work. (and doesn't seem concerned about it.) I guess I should get a booster to somewhat decrease my chances of transmitting things to other people around me this 'season.' I wonder about getting one ASAP vs waiting until 'updated' ones become available in ~ a month.

sal OP ,
@sal@brain.worm.pink avatar

What are people's thoughts on nasal sprays that are designed as an additional barrier (in addition to masking)?

Someone posted a pretty good breakdown of the different types available and the trials done on them, @ https://synecdochic.dreamwidth.org/800951.html

I am waiting on an iota-carageenan spray in the mail currently. Some of these are big allergy triggers for some people, and some are very toxic to pets (xylitol) so that's something to be aware of. People report different things about nitric oxide (enovid) spray being seized or not by U.S. customs.

@actuallyautistic This is an awkwardly-worded but genuine fundraiser. I am acquainted with Kayanna through autistic / disability rights circles. She reached out to a group I volunteer with because ableist school teachers were locking her son in an isolation room, demanding that he be put in ABA and put on psych drugs he didn't want - as a result she had to switch over to homeschooling him to avoid this nightmare. (She's not a religious / fundy homeschooler - this was a pragmatic ad hoc decision to avoid ableist abuse.)

She's now lost her home in the Maui fires. This is a fundraiser that a friend of hers started on her behalf. Please consider sharing, thank you.
