From a survey of @penn_state : "72% …reported they had not purchased a course’s required textbook, and 33% said they had not registered for a specific course because of its cost of required course materials. In addition, 33% said they had earned a poor grade because they couldn’t afford to purchase a course textbook, and 17% dropped a course because of the cost of materials required for the course."

@penn_state @petersuber @DoomsdaysCW @academicchatter having worked for one of the last independent textbook publishers before it was bought by a giant... yes. everything now is either thompson or pearson. but it seems like textbooks have always been crazy expensive and i could never figure out why. there's a LOT of marketing involved.

@bookstodon In my quest for physical copies of several out of print books, I have had some success with BookFinder, Abe, Thrift Books, Bookshop, and Better World Books. Are there other services I should try?

I'm trying to expand my Stephen Graham Jones collection in particular, and it's daunting, esp. finding THE LONG TRIAL OF NOLAN DUGATTI in print. Ha. Maybe it's my long trial.

ThriftBooks.com is a great website! I know I've said this before but I want to say it again. I've made many orders, and only today did I get a book that had a few pages missing.

It's late Tuesday night and I wrote them to ask what to do, and they wrote back within an hour and said no worries, they'll send me a new one, free of charge, I don't have to return the old one. Such nice folks!
