I’m listening to this song now while reading Star Wars Thrawn. No, it’s not a direct allusion to the Thrawn of Rebels (because there it seems to me a little different from the books), but it definitely helped me get in the mood.

@factolvictor @madcollector @bookstodon Filoni introduced Thrawn in Rebels to make him canon. It was the first episode after Disney bought SW if I'm remembering correctly.

Disney moved basically everything not on the screen to Legends as you know. Filoni thought Thrawn should be canon so he wrote him in.

So, whether or not Outbound flight is canon Filoni likely liked it and Zahn certainly did. I think it's relevant. Dark Forces Trilogy is Legends, for now as it deals with the future.

philip_cardella ,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@factolvictor @madcollector @bookstodon what's really interesting to me is Thrawn's motivation in the post Disney purchase books.

So far Thrawn hasn't acknowledged it in Rebels or Ahsoka but neither has anything Filoni has done contradicted it, that I'm aware of.

And the book Ahsoka, which is great--I'm usually not a huge SW book fan btw--is contradicted in Tales of the Jedi but only slightly. Filoni worked with that author. I'm guessing he's working with Zahn too.

philip_cardella ,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@factolvictor @madcollector @bookstodon the way Ahsoka takes down the Inquisitor in Tales of the Jedi is epic and I rewatch it often. She absolutely destroys him.

It is not the way she does it in the book and good grief the book version is way more everything. It might not be as visually stunning but whoa is it awesome.

philip_cardella ,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@nowa66_ @factolvictor @madcollector @bookstodon but Disney created Legends in 2014 and moved the Thrawn books into Legends in 2014.

@factolvictor @bookstodon fantastic series of books. Zahn is awesome.

I hope we see a lot of the ideas in those books in live action.

I need some new science fiction to read, who has some suggestions? I don't like military sci-fi. For reference, my favorite series is the Expanse, I also enjoyed Scalzi's Collapsing Empire, I love Robert Charles Wilson's books. I mostly enjoy space operas and unique stories about technology, for example I really liked the recent book Mountain in the Sea about AI and intelligent octopus. Suggestions from the awesome Bookstodon community? @bookstodon

philip_cardella ,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@todwest @Jennifer @bookstodon that'd be cool. Morgan Freeman has had the rights to it forever but it hasn't gone anywhere. I hope it does now.

Would be interesting to see how they approach the series. Would they start with Rendezvous? Or go straight to the trilogy sequel?

It'd be cool for Lee to see the project complete. I hope they use him as an advisor--the dude started writing as a side hustle from his legendary work with JPL and NASA.

@Jennifer @bookstodon NK Jeminsin's Broken Earth Trilogy. Won three consecutive Hugos.

Worth highlighting this means a black woman is the only person ever to win three consecutive Hugos.

She might be the best world builder out there, Larry Niven is also great, but her character building is top shelf too.

Field of Blood by Joanne Freeman is excellent non fiction about violence in Congress pre Civil War. If that doesn't sound super exciting I promise it is and her other book is quoted directly in Hamilton. https://bookshop.org/p/books/the-field-of-blood-violence-in-congress-and-the-road-to-civil-war-joanne-b-freeman/9894131?ean=9781250234582

For fiction have you read The Broken Earth trilogy by N K Jemisin? All three books won Hugo awards--first time anyone has won three consecutive Hugos.

I need to buy a gift for a family-of-friend. I am informed that they really like mystery stories, especially in historical settings, but are not fond of SFF.

I assume this means they have already read the obvious candidates, the Cadfaels and the like, or if they haven't then that's a conscious choice on their part which means I shouldn't buy them one of those.

What's a non-SFF mystery story you've enjoyed recently? Recommend me a book please!

On Nov. 27, 1978, the late Dianne Feinstein, then the 45-year-old president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and two-time failed mayoral candidate called a press conference to announce her retirement.

That afternoon, a supervisor killed Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk.

Feinstein handled the moment with poise, and went on to serve 9 years as mayor and 3 decades in the U.S. Senate.

Just started Tehanu by Ursula K. Le Guin. Apparently the later books of the cycle are disliked by fans. I am bewildered by that assessment. I can already tell this is an all-time favorite.

Everything from the prose to the characters feels more mature and meditative. Gender is also examined in a much more holistic and painful way. Several passages have already spoken to my soul in such a deep way that I know will remain with me for a long time

@bookstodon

philip_cardella ,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@wordstitcher @hawksquill @bookstodon my wife's aunt lived in her mother in law for years. So I've been in her house!

Never met her though. ☹️

philip_cardella ,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@derpoltergeist @wordstitcher @hawksquill @bookstodon do you know what a mother in law is?

philip_cardella ,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@Grizzlysgrowls @derpoltergeist @wordstitcher @hawksquill @bookstodon I mean, context? But I guess in some places it's called an efficiency, maybe. Though that's not exactly what this was as it had a full living room, dining room, bedroom and bath.

philip_cardella ,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@CandaceRobbAuthor @wordstitcher @hawksquill @bookstodon I'm not sure jargon is quite right but it works. Yes, it's an apartment inside a house. Perhaps it's a west coast term though if you know Canon Beach you must be in Oregon.

I heard she was delightful unless you tried to take away someone's rights.

philip_cardella ,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@Grizzlysgrowls @derpoltergeist @wordstitcher @hawksquill @bookstodon Some one asked me if my house had an efficiency in Miami and I hadn't a clue what she meant. But it's functionally the same, I gathered, though I feel like an efficiency is more of a studio apartment where a mother in law can be a separate house (in that case synonymous with a guest house)

philip_cardella ,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@ukaunz @bookstodon @derpoltergeist @wordstitcher @Grizzlysgrowls @hawksquill interesting! Is a granny flat a self sufficient apartment within a larger house? (So has at least a kitchen and bathroom and a place for a bed)

philip_cardella ,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@Grizzlysgrowls @ukaunz @bookstodon @derpoltergeist @wordstitcher @hawksquill interesting. California required those for a while during World War II in some places. Then they suddenly outlawed apartments in some cities (because the workers who moved in were often Black). I guess they finally realized how self harming racsim is after nearly 80 years. 🤦‍♂️

philip_cardella ,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@ukaunz @bookstodon @derpoltergeist @wordstitcher @Grizzlysgrowls @hawksquill yeah that's it. I think we'd call it a lot here in the States but yes.

philip_cardella ,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@ukaunz @bookstodon @derpoltergeist @Grizzlysgrowls @wordstitcher @hawksquill it can be those things or a converted section of a house. Or, as was the case in WWII in parts of California, purpose built.

philip_cardella ,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@derpoltergeist @Grizzlysgrowls @ukaunz @bookstodon @wordstitcher @hawksquill same. Lots of phrases to learn. Always amazes me how different language can be.

@bookstodon I'm looking for book recommendations for an 11yo who reads at a much more advanced level. He likes sci-fi. He has read the Hitchhiker's Guide series and loved them. I think he would enjoy some more 'hard' sci-fi as well. He needs something challenging but without subject matter that is too mature. Thanks for any help!

philip_cardella ,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@rabbit_fighter @bookstodon hmmm. My recollection of 2001 is that it's not super mature in content. Dystopian stuff might work if that's not a form of too mature. Starship Troopers, (NOT the movie which is too mature for me), 1984 and Animal Farm, perhaps.

The Broken Earth trilogy (hat tricked the highest honor in Scifi with three straight Hugo awards) is great and I don't recall much sex (it is alluded to).

This list looks good imo.

Honestly, I think 10-12 and YA books are actually the hardest to write and some of the best any genre can offer BECAUSE they can't get lazy with shock imagery and they can't get bloated with superfluous wording.

Don't be afraid to recommend those imo.

@CuriousMagpie @rabbit_fighter @bookstodon Verne is a good one but he often is pretty racist (I read around the world in 80 days this year and it has a few YIKES moments with regards to racism) It's something to keep in mind for readers.

Still, though, seasons 5-7 of The Clone Wars are amazing and the last four episodes of S7 follow Ahsoka through the events of Revenge of the Sith. But as good as it is the emotional impact of the final episode is difficult without a good understanding of her relationship with the Clones. This video has some of that.
