We don’t really think the FCC chair is going to do anything, do we?

What a weird quote. America is all about promoting violence. Washington loves its wars, especially when non-Americans are getting killed in foreign countries, and tens of millions of people across the country feel the same way. Hell, even the national anthem is glorifying violence.

Are you suggesting that when John Fogerty wrote that song in 1969 he wasn’t opposed to spoiled rich folk? That’s one perspective, but he said the exact opposite…

You’d hear about the son of this senator or that congressman who was given a deferment from the military or a choice position in the military. They seemed privileged and whether they liked it or not, these people were symbolic in the sense that they weren’t being touched by what their parents were doing. They weren’t being affected like the rest of us.

In point of fact, when Fogerty found out that Trump was using his song, he issued a cease and desist order.

I feel like this is inaccurate. What other religions were on hand in the late 1700s? The native religions, of course, but the white guys did not care about that.

Of course there was an emphasis on avoiding dependence on any one organized religion. That was one way of keeping power in the right hands.

And in the 1970s and 1980s, it depends where in the US, but in many places or was and is very common to be Christian. If there is an strong majority, there’s no need to explicitly weaponize because society itself is already pushing your agenda. But that doesn’t mean harm wasn’t caused.

I hope you get up on the other side of the bed tomorrow. It sounds like you’re going through a rough time in life, but with luck perhaps it’s only a one day phenomenon.

Also, if you want to troll, try to do a better job than that. I got kind of bored reading it.

You often find people who have advanced degrees who are good at one thing but horrible at many other things. This is most obvious if you consider the teaching quality of the average university professor. Yes they have a PhD, but it doesn’t mean their classes are worthwhile, and it doesn’t even mean they can write worth a damn.

Blame the victim.

It’s such a common maneuver when you want to undermine a person or a movement’s legitimacy that we even gave it a name.

In the United States MLK talked about this in so many words. He described perfectly how many people will say that they agree with your goals but not with your methods. And if you were to ask what their methods are, it would involve waiting. The problem with that is that waiting doesn’t fix anything.

orcrist ,

Oh, that’s an easy one. You framed the problem wrong. When you decided to talk about the problem in terms of the protests, you decided that the actual problem was not important. So that was basically irresponsible.

And the outcome of your framing decision is anti-democratic. If the only thing we look at is the protest, then it’s easy for people to say and believe that a fringe element of looters or rioters is unavoidable, and therefore either the police should have more power to deal with protesters or protests themselves ought to be canceled.

It’s certainly possible to discuss protests and avoid the above pitfalls, but it definitely requires careful consideration.

YSK: Just because something is easy for you, does not mean that it is easy.

ETA; Why you should know; everyone has natural talents, everyone has skills they developed with practice or over time. Something that feels easy to you might be difficult for someone else to grasp, or they might have a different background or a different way of doing things. When you show someone else how to do something, or when you ask someone else to do something, you need to set aside your expectations on how they might do that thing, or how quickly, or how well.

Be patient. Understand not everyone comes naturally to every new skill or new talent. Some people have learning disabilities or just a lack of familiarity with skills you consider "basic." And try not to belittle someone for needing extra time to master something you find "simple" or they may never try again!

Edit2: Kind of like how I can't figure out how to edit this to save my life. I've been belittled in the past for being bad at things so my instinct was to delete this, but seeing all the conversation, I couldn't bring myself to do it! Consider me a lesson in action!

One of the rules of thumb when teaching is to avoid saying something is “difficult” or “easy” most of the time. Usually there is not much benefit to the students in it, and other adjectives or descriptions would better capture the message without leading to discouragement.

Single users really don’t need to worry much. If you really want to use Fedora, keep using it. But even if you get burned somehow in the future, it’s not hard to switch to some other distro. Just make sure your data is relatively portable. You do that normally, right?

If you’re a sysadmin, though, you should think carefully with anything Red Hat based.

orcrist ,

Same here, of course. But now it is comforting to know that even if it breaks, we won’t be down for long. :-)

YSK: Even though it isn't a foolproof criterion, the fact that a claimed "news" source is offered "completely free (as in free beer)" may suggest that it is poor quality

Why YSK: good journalism has a lot of costs (and not one-time-only), in time if not in money, so if any “news” source isn’t at least trying to get paid somehow*, then it indicates that the supply at zero price exceeds the demand (it is a “free good”), which means one of two things:...

orcrist ,

I think you have completely forgotten about the average citizen journalist. In other words, if someone has a phone and they’re in the right place at the right time, they can create a blog entry or short video and upload it to social media, and that might be 100% highly relevant news for which they have zero intent of making any money.

That’s a very simple one-off example, but I think we can find countless examples of high quality blogs that provide us accurate and timely news on specific subjects, where the author has no intent to monetize.

If you would like to reframe your claim to involve indexing or aggregating, that might be interesting.

I don’t quite agree with parts of the article, although certainly many of the descriptions of how processes work are spot on.

At the beginning there’s a description of developers who focus on the wrong thing, and that process is solvable by creating good procedures to get data from the customer to the developer. If your company is having issues with that, then your company has a communication problem.

At the end there’s a general description of what’s wrong with large corporations, and I don’t think it has anything to do with software at all. Anytime you have a medium or large organization, You’re going to find in corruption by way of pet projects or contracts with a friend’s company, and you’re going to find managers who write memos and have meetings because that’s the only thing they know how to do.

orcrist ,

Right but if you’re using a mini split you’ll get much greater efficiency for the heat.
