Do you have background on these stories?
As german, most of those stories feel so dull that I lose patience listening to old people talking about them most of the time.
Even more so because most of the time I don't get a lot more info about the background or anything if I ask.
Many of these are like there is <name> that has <anomalous property> and/or <punishes / fools / eats> <children / people in search of love / traversing place at night>.
Stays abstract.

Sometimes there is some vague christian "lesson" in there that doesn't make sense after even small questions.

In one area of my life,
most of the tales I heard fit into 2 buckets:

  • Mythical person in the woods that abducts or scares kids. Either because in the distant past it actually happened or as a reason to not stay in the woods late.
  • Some mythical person with a funny name that is presented as iconic by itself. Not doing anything threatening, just being peculiar.
Like a hermit or single in a hut in the woods enjoying themselves.

Latter one like Gandalf, Radagast, Bachen-Benno without the magic and descent of gods part.

I wonder if these details are unique enough to infer the area I am talking about.

The restless woman (ghost) stories always seemed less personal and concrete. Kinda like a canvas to interpret whatever you want onto.
