I've been thinking about that Sabine Hossenfelder video* that is doing the rounds and I have to say that I mostly don't like it. It raises real issues with how the incentives are laid out in science, yes, but the whole framing is (sometimes explicitly) that that is all academia is and there's nothing of value. Besides, these are not new issues and a lot of people have been talking about these points in a much more productive way.

@eliocamp @academicchatter @JohannaMakesGames I am a little surprised, that fellow academics (see thread) seem to feel the urge to go after the messenger than after the problem… and that is IMHO a science culture devaluing personalities and novel ideas over hierarchies and „high impact“ yellow press. Can‘t we just agree to disagree? I for my part do not agree with all her statements, but thats how science should be, isn‘t it!

A recent study highlights the decline in disruptive science. I think most of this is due to the intellectual poverty of a mindset of current day .

It is well documented that poor people suffer from a scarcity mindset, which erodes core cognitive functions. This mindset clouds decisions, prioritizing small short-term gains over long-term larger profits by affecting planning ability. The same applies to creativity.

@koen_hufkens @andrei_chiffa @academicchatter I disagree with your conclusions from this article (although in themselves they may be valid) because the metric they use is highly questionable and was extensively discussed last summer…

@kraweel65@norden.social avatar

@koen_hufkens @andrei_chiffa @academicchatter You list quite a set of problems here… But it seems you are expecting every PhD is entitled to find a career in academia. This is and probably never was true. (PostDoc time IMHO is a purgatory to weed out those willing to sacrifice A LOT! I can not recommend it. ) Talking „disruptive science“ - is there an objective metric to that? Very much like „quality of science“ ? - might be the sorcerer‘s stone.

I cannot believe that I have not seen this scientific study before now. I have gone my whole life believing that parachutes save lives, but this controversial research has overturned consensus on this. I am now convinced that parachutes are a waste of money. To show my support for this idea, I will be jumping out of a plane without a parachute to show that it is perfectly safe!

New study: "Our results show that Chinese PhD student significant pressures to publish in order to obtain their degree, with papers indexed in the Science Citation Index [] often a mandatory requirement for students to obtain their degree. Moreover, it is found that first authorship is also mandatory."

@Thcoudreau @wolfgangcramer @academicchatter @petersuber Not sure whether it is a general rule, but my impression of PhD in the scandinavian countries was: collect at least three published (or accepted) (to 5) papers and write a synopsis. First authorship or significant contribution is mandatory…. Not so far from the chinese approach, not?

For the love of Mike, get past your ableism, academia!

You should already have done it for the sake of disabled academics, but climate emergency means it is utterly wasteful and foolhardy to keep holding in-person events that everyone has to pony up to travel to instead of academia investing in creative, accessible online events.

It also makes the event more accessible to those who cannot get visas, $ to travel, etc. @academicchatter

@ml @academicchatter TBH I visit conferences to meet my long time colleagues, fight with my enemies, talk to new students and socialize with my friends, that way cooking up creative (perhaps sometomes too spirited) ideas. Does anybody have a solution to offer how that is supported by online presentations (which I love for straight info dumping)??? Serious question!
I understand that online is better for my CO2 footprint... But it misses the unspoken core of a conference.

"A new study reveals a significant disparity in neural activity during face-to-face conversations compared to Zoom interactions.

Using advanced neuroimaging, researchers observed suppressed neural signals during online exchanges. In contrast, in-person discussions presented heightened brain activity, with more coordinated neural responses between participants, emphasizing the richness of live social interactions."
I am waiting for the full study: https://neurosciencenews.com/zoom-conversations-social-neuroscience-24996/

@UlrikeHahn @ml @academicchatter On the contrary! We need more creativity and f2f interaction in order to find working solutions for our worlds problems! I experienced a severe drop in novelty and problem solving during the Covid lock-downs... I am happy to try any online method out there, but it just doesn't seem to zap the phantasy like the informal part of a conference, yet. More than happy to be proven wrong here!

Could you enlighten us, why this sudden concern? It appears to me that the Mütter exhibit is a lot more educational and valuable than the notorious cadaver gawking like Body Worlds (German title: Körperwelten) and its clones...

So I just learnt that J Physiol requires figures to be made with Biorender (https://www.biorender.com/), a VC backed subscription SaaS extend and extinguish of scientists drawing pictures!

Is this a thing now!? Complete privatisation of the publication workflow!?

Am I the only one enraged by this!? Pictures? We could have just made our own shared repository of useful graphics. Our own open source software. Uggghhh!
