There were a bunch in my areas last school board elections as well.

Most lost by a large margin, but a couple actually got elected. Both have since been suspended by the boards they are on for violating multiple policies and governance oversight regulations.

Prevention. Education.

Fixing the core societal issues that have been proven many times to reduce crime.

Poverty, addiction, hopelessness, desperation.

Obviously dealing with those on a societal level is not fast, easy or cheap, but it does actually work. Eventually.

His bluster includes months worth of things he plans to do “on day one”.

But, if he actually manages to get elected, his highest priority is going to be trying to pardon himself, despite that probably not being possible. Trying to cover his own sorry ass will absorb most of his attention for many months.

Of course, he first has to get elected.

People like how Trump sounds certain and sure and strong,

He’s telling them whatever lie he thinks they want to hear.

And for reasons I can’t explain, far too many people are comforted by that blatant lie. Even when it contradicts the lie he told yesterday.

My solution is to just watch less in general.

Not like there’s a ton of new stuff worth watching at any given time anyway.

perhaps deterrence being a goal of punishment isn’t all that effective.

It really isn’t. Most people who plan their crimes tend to have convinced themselves that their cunning plan means they won’t get caught.

And (at the other end of the criminal “mastermind” spectrum), crackheads who don’t plan their crimes are also not thinking about the possibility of getting caught.

And if you beleive you won’t be caught, the potential punishment is irrelevant to you.

Google is laying off more employees and hiring for their roles outside of the U.S.

That is the double edge sword of remote work: if your job can be done from anywhere, it can be done by someone else in another country where wages are lower.
