Eh, what are we gonna do, stick anyone who has a hit and run in jail? Jail should be reserved for dangerous people, not someone who commits a hit and run. They had no way of knowing it would turn into a serial thing.

Edit: I should add that purposeful bodily injury is a small subset of hit and runs that would be different than just a regular car crash that damages a vehicle or structure. This case appears to involve multiple attempted vehicular homicides, which is far more serious than a hit and run, which typically just involves fender benders

a move that could further alienate many Muslims from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist government ahead of national elections.

I don’t think they really needed any more reasons to dislike Modi lol

    Video in a few dozen cases showed some officers mocked people as they died, laughing or making comments such as “sweaty little hog,” “screaming like a little girl,” and “lazy f—.”

    In about 30% of the cases, police were intervening to stop people who were injuring others or who posed a threat of danger. But roughly 25% of those who died were not harming anyone or, at most, were committing low-level infractions or causing minor disturbances, AP’s review of cases shows. The rest involved other nonviolent situations with people who, police said, were trying to resist arrest or flee.

    I mean, at least according to the article, the opposite

    As others have pointed out, there are rules against treating family/spouse. I’d imagine there are stories of patients and clinicians falling for each other, in which case the ethical move would be to transition care to another provider as soon as possible.

    Here’s the full AMA rule on dating patients that walks you through the steps in more detail:

    Do you say that towards a group of Black people? Then yeah, probably.

    Do you say it to a bunch of kids acting silly? Then no, you’re probably good

    If I’m taking this seriously, OP seems to be getting at the idea that people always insinuate “the other” is responsible for horrors, but that people in the same group are innocent? I don’t think everyone does that though

    It’s easy to say: “other people do things because of pressure, I do things because I want to.” But that kinda oversimplifies free will, power dynamics, and other similar concepts. Why is charity rewarding to you? Because someone gave you a pat on the back? Couldn’t we boil it all down to extrinsic motivators? Some people might not feel good “giving away” their time to charity. You don’t feel good having kids. It’s all perspective.

    That article doesn’t back up your claim at all. It talks about an industry.

    Also, GHG metrics by volume distort the picture when CO2, by volume, is like 25x less potent than methane

    Except you claim every dollar of your donation, not 30%?

    jeffw OP , (edited )
    @jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

    You donate 100k, you get a 100k tax break…

    www.irs.gov/…/charitable-contribution-deductions

    Maybe you’re confused by the limit of how much of your AGI can be deducted?

    In general, contributions to charitable organizations may be deducted up to 50 percent of adjusted gross income computed without regard to net operating loss carrybacks. Contributions to certain private foundations, veterans organizations, fraternal societies, and cemetery organizations are limited to 30 percent adjusted gross income (computed without regard to net operating loss carrybacks), however. Tax Exempt Organization Search uses deductibility status codes to indicate these limitations.

    That does not mean you claim 30% of the donation

    I linked to the IRS and 3 other sources? It sounds like you aren’t American. Check out our tax laws

    And next time you want to pretend to be American, don’t say shit like “maths” that gives away where you’re from

    And just for clarification, I’m not the guy you were talking to in this thread

    @jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

    That’s cute, you misread a basic article about US taxes and now refuse to read anything I’ve linked lol.

    You’re stating fallacies that are debunked in my links from the IRS. But if you think the IRS is lying about tax law, by all means, link me your references

    jeffw OP ,
    @jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

    That’s cute how you’re putting words in my mouth and pretending to be a tax expert. Kinda funny that you’re a tax expert who doesn’t know what AGI means lol.

    @jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

    Buddy, these people don’t make 100k. They make 100M. 100% of their charitable contributions count against their tax burden. Please read the articles I linked before you continue to reply with nonsense

    jeffw OP ,
    @jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

    No, that’s not how it works. PLEASE read the article or poke around the IRS website on your own. It does not count against your income, it counts directly against the taxable amount you owe.
