Is the actor of captain Jean-Luc Picard a smoker?

I recently watched Star Trek: The Next Generation and in Season 1 Episode 11 he gets offered a cigarette and takes it, for me indicating that he would smoke. Even though he coughs after pulling once. is it just to fit in to the character of dixon hill or the actor or is it picard as a character?

I think I once read that when the metric system was first defined during the French Revolution, they also tried to use a decimal system for time, but that was quickly abandoned.

japps13 OP ,

Thank you for the detailed and insightful answer. I’ll bookmark it to decide on the next books to read.

First, the Relaunch Treklit novelverse is a separate continuity from the new television series. I personally prefer a lot of the choices of major political arcs in the Relaunch timeline better than the new shows. Interestingly, the last season of Picard started to bring in some parallels from the books, despite being a very different future for Picard himself.

OK good to know. So I can continue forward and not get spoilt. Does it mean that they have stopped writing for this timeline, now that the new shows are out ?

Una McCormack has a few more Cardassia focused books. If you haven’t read them all yet, I’d suggest those given your preference for her book in the Fall. The book with Dr Pulaski is great and important but should be read after the Bashir S31 sequence if you’re going to do that.

You mean Enigma Tales, and Neverending Sacrifice, or are there others ?

the Voyager books advanced much more slowly through the timeline. I found the Christie Golden books exasperating (mainly due to the constraints out in her by the IP holder). When Kirsten Beyer took over and started the Full Circle sequence she was given freedom to fix many issues. It’s a great set of return to the Delta Quadrant books. Some recommend just starting with ‘Full Circle’ and going forward from there. Beyer takes about the first half of that book catching you up and moving things forward.

As a matter of fact, I remember reading some of the earliest of those Voyager books (paper version). But it is so long ago that I could as well reread them now. What’s “IP holder” ?

japps13 OP ,

Is there a full list of novels in this timeline ?

I found Memory Beta First Splinter novels timeline, but it does not have all the novels. In particular, I can’t find either “Collateral Damage” or “Time To” in the list…

How Accidental Geoengineering May Be Affecting Climate Change. [Re: rise in sea temperature] (threadreaderapp.com)

Scientists have discovered that the recent spike in global temperatures may be caused by a reduction in sulfur dioxide pollution from shipping vessels. Ships have long emitted sulfur dioxide, which cools the planet by seeding clouds and reflecting sunlight. However, new regulations that limit sulfur in ship fuels took effect in...

Fascinating. I heard something similar with particle pollution in big cities.

Riots like these are what you get when you prevent any other forms of protests: banning protests (illegal but by the time you get through court to get the ban lifted it is too late), making unions and strikes irrelevant by never ever yielding, preventing votes in the National Assembly using pressures on MP and all that the means that our constitution allows to bypass parliament, even though there is no clear majority for whatever you are doing, forcefully removing peaceful protestors, etc There are reasons why unions was good for everyone, elite class included, they allow peaceful resolution of conflict. If you remove all peaceful avenue, there will be people going into the not peaceful avenue.

I am not advocating for violence. However, it is not historically acurate to say that violence has no benefit. As a matter of fact, I can think of instances in the 18th, 19th and 20th century where violent protestors obtained rights or the end of some kind of oppression. I am not sure I can think of even one instance where anyone got anything without some kind of violence (or destruction of private property), even in the 20th century (there was violence in the May 1968 protests, or in the 1936 strikes, etc). The term “sabotage” itself has something to do with workers destroying the workshops by throwing their shoes (called “sabots”) into the machine.

Yes ! This would also be useful on Mastodon.

How many people here have actually used XMPP?

With all the current discussion about the threat that Instagram Threads has on the Fediverse and that article about how Google Embrace Extend Extinguished XMPP, I was left very confused, since that was the first time I’ve heard that Gchat supported XMPP or what XMPP actually is, and I’ve had my personal Gmail since beta (no,...

Very interesting read. Thanks for sharing. I’m curious: have you considered [matrix] nowadays?

japps13 ,

How do you forward Whatsapp to matrix? Is it two-way?

japps13 ,

This guy is a shame for us all, French academics… sorry World, please know we’re not all frauds….

I am a scientist myself, and I know what the HCERES says about his institute, and also that his institute no longer had support of the CNRS, which is telling considering that the CNRS only very rarely make such moves, as well as editors no longer accepting his papers leading him to create his own self serving journals. My issues with him are his lack of scientific rigor and lack of scientific ethics. Unfortunately, he’s staining the community as a whole, even though he lost support of several scientific institutions long before the Covid.

From my limited experience, make sure the things you want to solder are mechanically held together. And heat the pieces you want to solder, and use them to melt the tin. Never melt the tin directly on the iron.

You can use a third hand, typically like this: befr.rs-online.com/web/p/…/1466439

Should I use Matrix for Messaging?

I use an iPhone and my fiancé uses Android. He is not very tech savvy. He does not like to text for privacy reasons. I was going to recommend we get Signal but see others in Lemmy talking about Matrix. Is that better? If so, what app is best that works on both our phones? Thanks Lemmy friends!

japps13 ,

I use Matrix (Element client on iOS) with the extended family and it works well. Most of them are not tech-savvy. I self-host my own Matrix instance because I wanted to have control on where personal pictures were hosted.

japps13 ,

And naturally, matrix is federated so you can join rooms of any other instance.

japps13 ,

I’ve never bothered to try alternatives to Element. Are they worth trying ?

japps13 ,

The not so tech savvy family members have trouble with e2e though. They always have problems with device somehow not properly authorized, and some encrypted rooms accessible from the computer but not from the phone. I usually solve it for them regularly, but they still can’t do it by themselves. So I prefer to keep the rooms unencrypted (we are not sharing state secrets anyway), but self-hosted (I don’t want to give away family pictures to big tech companies).

Or another instance. Mastodon.social is quite overloaded.

Do you use RSS?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, and it’s is a simple, standardized content distribution method that can help you stay up-to-date with your favorite newscasts, blogs, websites, and social media channels. Instead of visiting sites to find new posts or subscribing to sites to receive notification of new posts, find the...

There is also an iOS app. It is quite simple but it works well.
