@bookstodon Do you own any autographed books? If so, did you personally meet the author at a signing?

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon I have an autographed copy of Suzanne Vega's "The Passionate Eye." It was sold that way.

I saw her play live in Zagreb. Everyone had lined up to have things signed but I didn't bring anything. Instead I told her that I was on the ancient fan mailing list in the 90s and early 00's and we reminisced a little. And she shook my hand. It was a nice interaction.

@bookstodon What's your favorite book title, whether you've read it or not?

Mine is EVERYONE ON THE MOON IS ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL, by Julian K. Jarboe, which I have not yet read, followed closely by THEY DON'T MAKE PLUS SIZE SPACESUITS, by Ali Thompson, which I have read.

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon I like "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" by Heinlein, and "The Passionate Eye" by Suzanne Vega. Both very evocative titles in their own ways.

3 people in my bookclub really enjoy reading erotica. To each their own, it’s simply not my thing. My question, & I don’t want to come across as condescending, are there any books of this genre that are well-written? I get there will be a lot of gratuitous stuff, but is that all there is to these books? Years ago, another bookclub I was in read the 1st book in the Sleeping Beauty series by Anne Rice (she wrote these under a different name) & I couldn’t finish it, I thought it was ridiculous.

Any insight?

@Likewise @bookstodon It's really common for people unfamiliar with the genre to look down on it. I was guilty of the same.

There's an important distinction between purely erotica (where sexual gratification is the main goal) and romance (where the relationship and emotional fulfillment after overcoming obstacles are the point, and sexual themes are a happy bonus). Neither are any sort of literary marvel, but they can be quite artful in their craft, within the constraints of their genre.

@Likewise @bookstodon Let me think of a few satisfying examples. Nalini Singh writes paranormal romance, and I've read her psy-changeling series. While each book deals with one couple's romantic story, there is a whole spectacle of rich worldbuilding and overarching plots that run through the entire series. It's still a cozy popcorn read, but well written!

For more borderline-romance paranormal writing, there's the Mercy Thompson books by Patricia Briggs, and Alpha and Omega.

@Likewise @bookstodon For a satisfying read, erotica requires context. It's the context and everything surrounding the erotic scene that build up the anticipation and subtle sensuality. For me this requires magical worldbuilding and emotional subtexts and connections. It is a craft in itself and shouldn't be looked down on. It may not be your cup of tea though!

As you can see from my examples, paranormal romances have something other than just sex in them. Otherwise it would be boring!
