A GORGEOUS retelling of the historical events of Spanish conquistadors under Hernán Cortés entering Tenochtitlan and the court of emperor Moctezuma.

This novella reimagines a complex world that many of us have some passing familiarity with. It's trippy hallucinogenic; it thrives in court politics and religious variety, color, aroma.

Think multicultural Game of Throes meets Hunter S. Thompson packed into a tight 220 pages. TIP: Don't skip the author's notes to the translator. @bookstodon

I've been thinking of finally reading some Stephen King, but no idea where to start.

Go for one of the likes of his famous work, like the Shining or the Green Mile? Or something lesser known?

The Stand didn't even crack Forbes' Top 10 list of Stephen King books, and I'm curious as to how this miscarriage of justice came about.

I need some new science fiction to read, who has some suggestions? I don't like military sci-fi. For reference, my favorite series is the Expanse, I also enjoyed Scalzi's Collapsing Empire, I love Robert Charles Wilson's books. I mostly enjoy space operas and unique stories about technology, for example I really liked the recent book Mountain in the Sea about AI and intelligent octopus. Suggestions from the awesome Bookstodon community? @bookstodon

Book 1: On a Sunbeam by Tillie Walden

5 stars

Stunning art, lovely found family, and a fun sci fi setting, all while managing to strike the perfect balance between cozy and yearning.

Hi all
Trying to remember the title and author of a book I had as a kid (about 40 years ago).

This is what I remember: A girl who has been in a bad accident moves to her aunt and uncle's place. They have a horse farm and all the kids ride. This girl doesn't want to ride anymore because she accidentally (?) killed her horse (?). She discovers two stolen pedigreed horses during a snow storm and saves them.

It was definitely not "literature" but I loved that book.

Any ideas?

Dear friends,

@bookstodon etc. Here is my Tentative reading list for 2024. I am for 12 novels a year, but life, writing, my family, it can all get in the way. For '23 I read 12 things, but they weren't all novels, so thats a half pass. The list:

Any sequels I'm up to (3 trilogies in this case), lotr i read recently but I loved it so much I'm thinking of doing it again. Dispossessed was on 23s list.

Have you read any of these, what's your take? Any suggestions or definite 'don't read that!'

Cat tax, Elspeth hiding behind a Christmas tree. A naughty torti up to no good.

@Jtmoriartywriter @bookstodon The Lathe Of Heaven is one of the best books I have ever read. Children of Dune Is possibly better than Dune. Dune Messiah was a bit of a disappointment, but a necessary connection between 1 and 2. Lord of the Rings is simply classic. There is nothing like it.

farbel ,
@farbel@mas.to avatar

@Jtmoriartywriter @bookstodon So interesting that you feel the opposite about Dune. It has been decades since I read it. I might feel differently now. I am loving the new movies.

farbel ,
@farbel@mas.to avatar

@passenger @Jtmoriartywriter @bookstodon Better put aside some time. There are now 28 Dune novels. Herbert's son carried on the series.

farbel ,
@farbel@mas.to avatar

@Jtmoriartywriter @passenger @bookstodon I loved the first Dune movie, despite the Toto soundtrack, because I knew the book well, and it was visually stunning and perfectly cast. That said, I am glad it is being done in three parts now. An expansive epic needs an expansive production.

farbel ,
@farbel@mas.to avatar

@jake @bookstodon @passenger @Jtmoriartywriter The series was definitely truer to the book, but the casting just didn't work for me.

farbel ,
@farbel@mas.to avatar

@passenger @Jtmoriartywriter @bookstodon As a writer myself, I am a lover of world building, and the ability of some writers to create an entire universe that spans multiple books is inspiring. I am having trouble knitting together three books, much less dozens of them.

farbel ,
@farbel@mas.to avatar

@passenger @Jtmoriartywriter @bookstodon I'm pretty sure Neal Stephenson won't be following up to Snow Crash, especially as it is so dated now.

farbel ,
@farbel@mas.to avatar

@passenger @Jtmoriartywriter @bookstodon Thanks for the well wishes. Mine was always conceived of as a trilogy, but I have grown as a writer (and hopefully as a person) over the last five years and 2 1/2 books, which makes the final volume a complicated task. As for enjoying engagement, that is partly why i write; to find out what happens next.

Does anybody know where to buy a copy of Morningstar, Liz William’s final novel? I tried Smashwords, which lead me to her Live Journal where I saw she was selling it self-pubbed back in 2014. There are a couple of comments from late 2022 on her LJ that have gone unanswered about this same thing.

@bookstodon

farbel ,
@farbel@mas.to avatar

@JustGrist @bookstodon I just looked at her LJ. She hasn't posted there since 2018, and her profile doesn't mention Morningstar. It seems like she has abandoned it altogether. You've got me interested in the series, though!
