I’ve been writing about historical artifacts and images for a long time, but this has to be one of the most bonkers items I’ve come across: a 16th-century depiction of an army of demons torturing a magician.

It’s just one of the many strange artifacts in the long visual history of magic, which I wrote about this week…

For this of us accused of buying too many - Umberto Eco was on our side:

'It is foolish to think that you have to read all the books you buy, as it is foolish to criticize those who buy more books than they will ever be able to read. It would be like saying that you should use all the cutlery or glasses or screwdrivers or drill bits you bought before buying new ones'

@ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon Hm, I'm completely onboard with buying more books than I can possibly read, but as a mechanic / machinist I don't buy tools I don't use. And as a hobby cook, same goes for kitchen equipment, although, I do have some dishes and glasses I inherited that I don't use. But books are special. There's nothing like a book. And as I like to say, books serve two purposes: Books decorate your mind with knowledge when read and when sitting on a bookshelf they decorate your home.

@sezduck @MirrorAyako @allstartrek Of all of the Star Trek characters, up through Enterprise, Miles O'Brien was the toughest. Poor guy lead a rough life.

@SJLahey @bookhistodons @medievodons I just love looking at all of the little doodles, characters, and creatures in the margins of illuminated manuscripts. And this one is great! Love the extended finger, but I'm left wondering who kissed the monk on the cheek? (And did they have lipstick in the 13th century or whenever that book was written--lol.)
