Keep blaming Assange; I’m sure Hillary Clinton still does 😆

@davel@lemmy.ml avatar

In the old old days, emojis didn’t exist yet, until NTT DoCoMo created them for mobile phones. Emoticons predate them.

If it’s whitelabel, what will Meta do? Start a new company? Inevitably, people would figure it out, and go with something else.

I think what’s more likely to happen than my maximalist argument, is that some existing instances will get direct or indirect funding or other forms of support from Meta, and start influencing their direction.

Yup! Basically everyone but employers, and cops, who are class traitors.

As long as you are a worker — not an employer — you can join the IWW. Members of other unions (except officers), students, retirees, the unemployed, the self-employed, those in informal professions, and those unable to work may also join.

we’d just defederate them.

It’s true that we can always choose to defederate from them. What’s to worry about is their meddling with the ActivityPub standard using their incomparably vast resources, and them making their own extensions to the standard in efforts to suck users back into the Borg. Things like that.

Unfortunately, even if instance admins were to unanimously defederate, Meta—or any social media corporation—could create white-label instances to take their place, and we might be none the wiser of their control of them.

Thanks, now I know not to take you seriously.

Edit to add: My uBlock Origin extension is blocking “threads.net” on his site. Perhaps he’s got some skin in the game.

This is typical of when a language is the new hotness. It eventually dies down, either because the language becomes endemic or it fades away.

One trick is to tell them stories that don’t go anywhere. Like the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they call Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days nickels had pictures of bumblebees on ‘em. “Give me five bees for a quarter,” you’d say. Now where were we? Oh yeah! The important thing was, that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn’t have white onions, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones.
