admiralteal , to reddit in Reddit claiming they weren’t recovering deleted posts

I definitely do not believe any of these stories of comments intentionally restored. Not one piece of concrete proof of it happening has been submitted by anyone. It's definitely one of those "do your own research" things.

But also, Reddit is responsible for this situation by not having a first party tool for self-service full account deletions. They deserve all these conspiracies hitting them for omitting such an essential feature.

admiralteal , to worldnews in Europe’s economic engine is stalling: Germany deindustrializes

Doubling down on your credulousness is not really going to present your point better.

The German economy is doing great. They're clearly surviving just fine without the business of those people you talked to who didn't want to deal with their laws. Must not be that big a loss for them.

admiralteal , to startrek in Actors’ Strike Set To Impact Star Trek Production And Promotion, Including Summer Conventions

Star Trek is basically only available via streaming platforms or piracy these days.

One of the reasons studios have enjoyed such great profits on the move to streaming is because the contracts for the writers and actors cause them to get paid way, way, way less for a streamed show than with regular syndication.

Meaning the people making Star Trek are some of the ones who stand to gain the absolute most from the outcome of this strike. All power to them.

admiralteal , to startrek in Would You Try New Pastimes If Star Trek Level Medical Care Was Available?

What about the opposite of that, though?

Permanent injury and disability is unlikely. Chronic pain is likely a nonissue. Most of the unpredictable diseases can be sciencemagick'd away. Even old age, you'll still be mobile, active, and happy. Long, thriving lives are the minimum expectation.

In a world where medical technology is so good that only "natural" death will get you in the end, and one where there's no resource constraint forcing you to a stressful and awful life with no opportunity to thrive, everyone kind of has a lot more to lose. I might be more willing to do something "risky", but not if that risk contains "risk of immediate death" because there's no fixing that.

Though whether this is the way human psychology works... who knows.

admiralteal , to worldnews in Europe’s economic engine is stalling: Germany deindustrializes

The claim isn't even true. This is a completely partisan political opinion piece and you've just accepted it at face value and are using it to justify a different partisan political belief.

The German economy is doing great compared to everywhere else in the world. They're on a path toward a continuing and financially sustainable future and conservatives are freaking out because one particular line isn't going up.

admiralteal , to news in Teachers in England will have to tell parents if children question their gender

Sounds like disingenuous braying to me.

Part of education, especially childhood education, has to be teaching children about the world they live in and how to navigate it. Which does mean that they need to be taught about tolerance and the differences between people. That's necessary for understanding and navigating the world they're entering. And teachers are there to guide them on that journey and keep them safe. To be an adult to whom they can ask questions without fear of reprisal. To be someone primarily interested in their success and not some other political goal.

Conservatives are the ones stepping into this process and interfering. Forbidding teachers to teach about the world. And forcing teachers to violate the confidence needed to keep children safe. Conservatives are the ones trying to replace education with a tool for indoctrination.

The only interpretation of a rule like the one in this article is that there is a belief that a child questioning their gender is equivalent to a child admitting to some kind of self-harm. It's pure bigotry and cruelty from people who know nothing and resist learning anything about the science and psychology of the subject. It is part of a genocidal agenda of demonizing and denying part of human identity. It is unacceptable. And worse, it's a violation of the fundamental relationship between the teacher and the student. It's interfering with and taking focus from education.

Be an ally of the human race or shut the fuck up.

admiralteal , to technology in AI learned from their work. Now they want compensation.

Because I never think I can post it enough, Let’s forget the term AI. Let’s call them Systematic Approaches to Learning Algorithms and Machine Inferences (SALAMI).

So much confusion and prejudice is thrown into this discussion by the mere fact that they're called AIs. I don't believe they are intelligent anymore than I believe a calculator is.

And even if they are, the AIs don't have the needs the humans do. So we still must value the work of the humans more highly than the work of the AIs.

I agree. I'm not quite sure how it's kosher. I can speculate but do not know. For example, maybe some of this stuff was pre-recorded? Just one possible wild guess.

John Hodgman talked about it in his podcast. He cannot promote any of the TV projects he's worked on because of the strike even though he'd like to, but he is allowed to promote and do stuff for Maximum Fun because it's an artist co-op which is totally separate from the strike/contract.

Promotion is strictly forbidden. Interviews about the strike or about personal lives are a different matter

admiralteal , to nostupidquestions in Do People in Third World Countries Have Stronger Immune Systems Than People in First World Countries?

There is no such thing, generally speaking and outside of particular medical conditions, as a "strong" or "weak" immune system.

There are two different factors being smooshed together.

One factor is general health and healthcare. A healthier individual -- no dietary deficiencies, well-rested, medical conditions treated, etc.. will generally just fare better when exposed to a disease. People in richer countries typically have better health.

Take cholera as a classic example. To a person in good health with access to water, cholera is a bad time, but unlikely to kill you or do permanent harm. To a person who already had nutrient deficiencies without access to abundant, clean water, it's a potential death sentence. This doesn't mean someone from a rich country had a "stronger" immune system. That person was just able to refill their personal health bucket faster than it drained thanks to those resources available to them.

In some cases, this is literally true. For example, being underweight is a worse comorbidity than being overweight by a similar amount, all else being equal.

The other factor is the immune response. Immune response is about exposure and recovery. You gain immunity to the pathogens you are exposed to as part of the recovery process. There's very little correlation between having an immune response to one disease and being better at fighting off another, different disease (though with quite similar things like strains of the flu, there is benefit). There's no such thing as "exercise" for your immune system. There is no evidence of overall strengthening caused by more exposure and recovery. Occasional studies come out that try to make this claim, but nothing very convincing has ever happened. That immunity response, in some cases, can diminish over time without re-exposure. There is precisely one medically sound and safe way to promote immunity: vaccination to relevant pathogens.

But if we're talking about "Don't drink tap water in Mexico" kinds of situations, it may APPEAR that way.

The reason locals don't get sick from the things that hurt tourists is because... they do. They did. It already happened, you just didn't see it. If you take someone from a very rich, healthy place and someone from a poor, unhealthy place and locate them both to a foreign environment with background pathogens to which they are not exposed, both are likely to get sick.

admiralteal , to fediverse in Theory: the only reason Meta cares about the fediverse / ActivityPub is so that threads isn't labeled a "gatekeeper" under the EU's new "Digital Markets Act"

They don't need to defederate. Just extend with Theads-only features to force others to funnel into their platform or else miss content. Slowly ramp it up until the competition mostly dies out on its own.

admiralteal , to nostupidquestions in Is there a way to subscribe to all communities with the same name?

What to would like to see is flipboard-style communities where mods import and curate other communities/magazines. I'm not fond of too much happening automatically, but certainly would enjoy seeing someone more in the weeds than my assemble the best of fediverse for a particular interest.

admiralteal , to world in France passes bill to allow police remotely activate phone camera, microphone, spy on people

During the debate on Wednesday, the members of parliament in the camp of President Emmanuel Macron inserted an amendment limiting the use of remote spying to “when justified by the nature and seriousness of the crime” and “for a strictly proportional duration.” They noted that a judge must approve any use of the provision, while the total duration of the surveillance cannot exceed six months.

They said sensitive professions, including doctors, journalists, lawyers, judges and MPs, would not be legitimate targets.

I don't see any here over whether this is technically possible even if it is allowed -- I suspect not. How is the French warrant process, in general? Do they require probable cause and limited scopes?
