adespoton , to nostupidquestions in Why did forum signatures fall out of favor?

I always found them annoying in the first place.

Back in the day when forums were mostly listservs, they made sense as the sig was where you stuck your finger info, so others could look you up.

But once things switched to real forums with user profiles, the original purpose was redundant as that information could be found linked to the username. So people started cluttering them with little digital billboards instead.

At that point, it served no real purpose and wasted data and (with the advent of mobile browsing) screen real estate.

So… pretty much what I thought would happen.

Ukraine needs to be stable before it enters NATO. Russia is going to do whatever they can to prevent that.

There’s not going to be a clear route forward unless someone can distract Russia long enough to sort things out without interference.

Ed is all anyone should ever need.

adespoton , to nostupidquestions in Anyone else feel like ~99% of their life was kind of wasted?

This is the core. I improve every day; part of that is by still not being dead.

Some people measure improvement by monetary wealth; some by fame, some by influence, some by personal happiness.

The key is to figure out what YOU value instead of measuring your improvement by someone else’s scale.

Much harder sell? They’d probably be paying close to $80 for gas for the same range.

adespoton , to nostupidquestions in When someone loses the domain name, can they still set up the same lemmy server under a different name?

That seems somewhat silly.

With email servers, local messages are passed without the domain. Same with HTML. It’s only when “federating” to other servers that a domain is required. I can’t really see why ActivityPub would be any different in what it requires.

If Matrix is requiring the domain, that’s likely to do with encryption and validation, which has always been an issue with Internet 1.0 services. But it seems to me it should still be possible, just not done with current server implementations.

adespoton , to nostupidquestions in How does an app like Threads get access to financial, political, health, religious or browsing info through your phone's OS. What is the actual source of that data?

That’s the attitude that gets people hooked in the first place.

Now see if you can extend that further and see how a company having intimate knowledge of your behaviour could be a problem.

Think about manipulation. Is there a reason you want to buy that crochet hook? Does it have to do with Meta knowing you just had a niece and were browsing on Pinterest, and already have a size 8 and 12 hook but no 10, so then they stuck a child oriented project in your feed that just happens to use the hook you don’t have?

adespoton , to nostupidquestions in Is it possible at all to negotiate, when Russia refuses to acknolwege Ukraine's sovereignty?

That’s what was tried in 2014. It didn’t work; just emboldened Russia to try again.

The only solution is the one where Russia voluntarily leaves.

adespoton , to nostupidquestions in Twitter is looking to sue Meta for "stealing trade secrets" amongst other things regarding Threads. Could/would they also take aim at Mastodon?

Good point.

And that’s why it’s good to join a small instance that aligns well with your privacy stance.

adespoton , to nostupidquestions in Twitter is looking to sue Meta for "stealing trade secrets" amongst other things regarding Threads. Could/would they also take aim at Mastodon?

It’s due to Meta hiring a bunch of the ex-Twitter employees Elon screwed over.

Mastodon didn’t do that, so isn’t in his crosshairs.

adespoton , to nostupidquestions in How many people here have actually used XMPP?

XMPP was sitting there in the background like any well behaved protocol. Anyone who used the original iChat or Google Talk, for example, used XMPP. And of course anyone who used Jabber.

For that matter, iChat communicated with AIM via XMPP IIRC. It’s not something you actively attempted to use, just like people don’t tend to talk about using HTTP or SMTP.

But when Google moved to a proprietary standard, that was the major client for XMPP. It broke my integration allowing me to communicate with all the other messaging systems, and the result was really that I stopped using all of them and switched to e2ee systems only, and Skype when I needed to.

But I still use Pidgin to connect to a private XMPP server from time to time; I just don’t leave it running 24/7 anymore. I’ve got iMessages and Signal and Matrix for that.

adespoton , to nostupidquestions in How many people here have actually used XMPP?

It’s the protocol used by the second generation of public chat systems; originally Jabber in the 90s, and later iChat and Google Talk.

adespoton , to nostupidquestions in How many people here have actually used XMPP?

I’m currently using it via Pidgin as well :)

Back in the day, I had an XMPP gateway running to combine my AIM, ICQ, Y! Messenger, iChat and MSN Messenger accounts into one place I could grab with the Jabber client of my choice. Eventually I used Google Talk as that client. Then they all went away.

adespoton , to news in CJEU ruling on Meta referral could close the chapter on surveillance capitalism

That’s all well and good, but does it protect those of us that chose not to use Meta’s services in the first place?

I knew what they were doing, chose not to be associated with it, but I know that they’ve still got a profile on me via people I know who use their services.
