Got an email from a student that I am 99% certain they wrote using ChatGPT asking for help with their major project. (In addition to sounding like AI, there are formatting clues that suggest it was copy-pasted.) The only non-AI part is where they describe project specifics—in bullet points. So they lack enough confidence in their own writing to even complete a few sentences, but have voluntarily chosen to do a major (not required for degree) research project. @academicchatter

@academicchatter I am flummoxed and don’t even know how to reply. Of course I will not accuse them of anything (I have no proof and it’s possible I’m wrong). I don’t want to ignore it. But if it’s what I think it is, how exactly do they plan to complete this project? Am I going to be exchanging emails with a bot, or a student who sincerely wants to learn and do something original? It’s really unnerving.
