I love how these plans still involve leaving bases from other countries when our veeeeery good ally Israel is literally right there. That we need to take these extraordinary measures rather than just say “ok, time for you to pay up for all the money and diplomatic protection” is embarrassing.

Zaktor ,

If they were our ride or die ally they’d do something for us, like ever. What they’re doing now is the opposite of “stabilizing” and the very fact that October 7th went off shows their intel isn’t that good.

Israel is welcome to threaten the United States and find out what happens when the United States tells countries to implement sanctions on a rogue power. But they almost certainly wouldn’t as Netanyahu would be deposed rather than make his country the next Cuba.

Uvalde parents lash out after new report clears city police of wrongdoing during 2022 school attack (apnews.com)

UVALDE, Texas (AP) — An investigation Uvalde city leaders ordered into the Robb Elementary School shooting cleared local police officers of wrongdoing Thursday, despite acknowledging a series of rippling failures during the fumbled response to the 2022 classroom attack that left 19 children and two teachers dead....

Zaktor ,

I’m sure this is a bit, but it’s a bad bit that doesn’t make much sense.

Zaktor ,

Oh, so mental illness.

Zaktor ,

I was concerned that this comment only had 5 downvotes, but then I saw you’d only posted it 12 minutes ago, so I have faith it will be bombed into oblivion as it deserves.

Targeted corrections to racism are not racism and racism is a separate problem from class. Sorry the demographic massively overrepresented in business and politics might have a few programs not available to them.

Zaktor ,

Oh my god you guys are so far up your asses it’s just chef’s kiss. Yes, whiny white boys are totally like the Palestinians.

You actually said that, read it, and thought “got 'em”.

Zaktor ,

There were 5 downvotes after 12 minutes and thirty something now. That there’s a lot of other whiners upvoting doesn’t make it a less derision-worthy comment.

Zaktor ,

Just because people aren’t having sex with you doesn’t mean they’re not having sex.

Zaktor , (edited )

It’s exactly this lack of humor that’s causing the no sex issue.

Zaktor , (edited )

People who are having sex don’t treat a stranger saying they aren’t having sex as a personal attack. Or well adjusted people who aren’t having sex and (correctly) don’t consider it a personal deficiency.

It was a joke, but by this reaction I’m getting a waft of incel bitterness, and surprise surprise, a long thread arguing about how it’s bigotry for women to be warry around men in a post about incels. So it’s not a surprise you’re here complaining about how non-white people could get benefits unavailable to white people. These grievances tend to show up together.

Zaktor ,

Who is this Mastodon CEO you think is controlling Mastodon’s culture? Rochko? He doesn’t have any influence on what posts anyone sees on Mastodon. Mastodon doesn’t have a central server or moderation team, and their algorithms are too dumb to instill a culture or even present a single unified culture. I see posts from people I follow, and people they boost, that’s it. It’s like a step removed from RSS feeds.

Zaktor ,

Fwiw, they mostly did

No they didn’t. 5 days of “normal activities with precautions” is not 5 days of “isolation”.

And the core problem is that 5 days was already not scientific and “fever” isn’t an indicator of infectiousness at all, it’s just a symptom that some infectious people experience for some of their infectious period.

From pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35853589/:

“We showed that among the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant infected patients, viral shedding continues for ≥10 days in 13.5% of all cases and 11% in symptom-free cases. The decision for cessation of isolation according to the presence of symptoms could be reconsidered until further studies disapprove of our results.”

Unfortunately, not everyone (single mothers?) has the luxury of taking a week off whenever they want or even NEED to.

The CDC changing he recommendation doesn’t do anything for people who might need to leave the house for supplies or to pick up a child. They already could and would do that, because a recommendation to private citizens is just a recommendation. Where it matters is that it removes liability from their employers and “lets” them work, but that’s only “helpful” because so many people are desperately poor and they haven’t mandated paid sick leave when people have infectious diseases. This is the sort of “helping workers” where the help is just because they do absolutely nothing to require humane conditions from their employers. Taking a week off to not infect your fellow workers shouldn’t be a “luxury”.

Zaktor ,

So the CDC caved, it seems, yet managed to preserve its integrity in the process, by both keeping its standards within the realm of correct medicinal advice

LOL, what? This is absolutely not correct medicinal advice. Doctors and scientists have been telling them that since the shortening to 5 days. You yourself say you don’t know what correct advice is earlier in this comment.

Zaktor ,

My company still requires regular testing and notifies of cases. In a company of ~100 or so employees I get an email every other week or so notifying of a new case. When the new CDC recommendation was brought up in our department meeting of scientists and engineers the reaction was bemused laughter and my boss immediately said “well, we’re definitely not doing that”.

Zaktor ,

this behavior has been seen a lot of times in previous pandemics where once very severe pathogens end up becoming much less severe but also more contagious in the process

I’m missing the OP’s first message as context, but just a note that diseases don’t really have any particular trend toward less severe forms. That they would naturally do that was a debunked theory from the 1800s. They can’t simply kill or disable their hosts before they get a chance to spread, but most illnesses have plenty of room to transmit before symptoms get to that level and viruses frequent evolve into more deadly forms.

What changes is the population’s resistance. Omicron wasn’t necessarily less deadly than the original variant that killed so many people, it was just better resisted.

Zaktor ,

There are a lot of Star Trek fans that liked it “before it became all woke”, and “wokeness” is a much more integral feature of Star Trek than science.

Zaktor ,

Even a news article about them doing an expressly bad thing still just calls it “appropriation” rather than stealing or annexing, like it’s just an administrative action to shift unclaimed land to a different administrator rather than territory occupied through conquest which the rest of the world has said should be sovereign.

Zaktor ,

I think Israel is expecting to be told “no” eventually, but to never have to make recompense for their actions or return the land, so they might as well just keep pushing until the United States eventually can’t tolerate any more. That point should have been in the past, but even establishment Zionists will eventually hit their limit.

Since whatever consequences they’ll face will probably just be a “stop” and at most some token reparations or rights for Palestinians, and the amount of their wrongdoing generally doesn’t impact the size of the consequences, might as well pack in land theft and ethnic cleansing in the West Bank along with the genocide. Then they’ll go through a few more years of slower colonialism before finding another provocation to allow them to once again go fast.

Zaktor , (edited )

We need to meet people where they are, not where the science says they should be.

Edit: I really didn’t think this needed the /s tag, guys.

Zaktor ,

Yes, that was the joke in my comment that apparently many people did not get. It’s absurd to “meet people where they are” when the science tells us where they are is dangerous.

Zaktor ,

Yes, I was being sarcastic and thought it was obvious enough not to need a /s. People wanting to lick urinals in no way makes it a good recommendation for the organization that’s supposed to be keeping them healthy. Their purpose isn’t to validate people’s feelings (or protect companies from liability), it’s to tell them how to stay healthy.

Zaktor ,

Their explanation that he misunderstood the question and was providing a total death count seems a lot more likely than that they have their own secret accounting we’ve never heard of before and he just spilled it by accident.

Zaktor ,

It’s wild how you read that article and just take the Israeli claim as truth when they’re contradicted by others right there in the article:

All or most of the casualties being treated at two other hospitals, Kamal Adwan and al-Awda, were said by officials there to have bullet or shrapnel wounds.

Zaktor ,

And in so many more ways than that. There was a crush of people trying to “loot” food because they were starving. Which was also caused by Israel. If aid trucks were regularly coming into Gaza, they wouldn’t be dealing with desperate people when they got through.

Zaktor ,

I didn’t take any of them as truth, because we don’t know. We do know Israel lies, frequently and blatantly, so believing them over other sources is dumb.

Zaktor ,

The person I was replying to before you jumped in for some reason apparently without reading the context.

I read just now on the BBC that most of the casualties were due not to gunfire

Zaktor ,

The Beeb didn’t say “most of the casualties were due no to gunfire”. They didn’t say any particular side was true. The OP just chose one side and ignored the other. They’re not trusting BBC, I don’t think any of us think the BBC is making up quotes, they’re selecting trusting a specific source among multiple relayed by BBC.

Exclusive: FDA finds problems at animal lab run by Musk’s brain implant company (www.reuters.com)

U.S. Food and Drug Administration inspectors found problems with record keeping and quality controls for animal experiments at Elon Musk’s Neuralink, less than a month after the startup said it was cleared to test its brain implants in humans, according to an agency report reviewed by Reuters....

Zaktor ,

Frankly I’d be much more shocked to find a regulatory agency show up at a Musk company and find “everything here is being performed with integrity and following the regulations to the letter”.

Zaktor ,

Part of these accusations was that this was a false flag by the FBI, but like, what’s the “false flag” supposed to be? Proud Boys fighting with Neo-Nazis is like the best thing they’ve ever done. The only way the “false flag” accusation makes sense is if you’re angry that the FBI is manufacturing animosity between the PB and their natural allies, the Nazis.

Zaktor ,

Me too, Biden, me too. If only I had the same power you do to cause one to happen.

Zaktor ,

This level of death and destruction hasn’t been going on for 75 years, and the President of the United States has vast amounts of influence with Israel. Stop supporting them, stop arming them, hell, start sanctioning Netanyahu and his genocidal cabinet.

Biden himself has put a stop to Israeli aggression before, and hell, even if they were simply uncontrollable, at least he would have tried.

Zaktor ,

That doesn’t matter as much as what is the local grocery shopping going to be like. I’ve never been to a Kroger (and only have been to an Albertsons via the Safeways they bought), so them controlling some percent of the market doesn’t say anything about the competitiveness of my local grocery market. Lots of people only live near a single grocery store brand, and that number would increase if those two merged.

Zaktor ,

Walmart will compete on some goods, but at least in my area they’re not really a grocery store. Their selection is much more limited. Some minimal poor quality produce, limited meats (nothing fresh), and few specialty items. You can go to a grocery store and get ingredients for most meals, but you can’t really do that with Walmart.

Zaktor ,

Yeah, they can very much hurt the profitability of a grocery store, but they shouldn’t be counted as valid competition for anti-trust determination. If a region has a grocery store and a Walmart, the grocery store still has a monopoly on a lot of items.

Zaktor ,

It’s easy for far away things, even horrific things, to just seem like trivia with no real salience to our lives. A statement like this is meant to wake people up that caring about the victims of our foreign policy is something for Americans to do. We as Americans have some small input into the process by which our taxes fund a genocide. And even if we don’t, maybe famously “empathic” Joe Biden might spend a second thought on the morality of his actions.

Zaktor ,

This is not an accurate recounting of the video. The “may I help yous” were over a second or two as he was trying to light himself, not a long period. The “get on the ground” started basically as soon as the fire lit and continued until he collapsed at which point the presumed speaker with the gun came on screen and continued to actively dance around the first responders trying to put Bushnell out so that his shot line would remain clear.

Zaktor ,

What? The photograph of Thích Quảng Đức was hailed by JFK as one of the most influential photographs in history and a turning point in Vietnam.

Zaktor ,

Oh I’m sorry that self-immolation isn’t a magic “stop” button and movements and social change take time to play out. Claiming it was inconsequential is just fucking insanely ahistorical. Next up, “Rosa Parks’ protest had no effect on the Civil Rights movement because it took 9 years for the Civil Rights Act to be signed”.

Zaktor ,

Nope, they’re both stupidly ahistorical statements to make. Ending the war wasn’t even the target of the protest, just an arbitrary end result you say wasn’t achieved quickly enough.

Israel Not Complying with World Court Order in Genocide Case (www.hrw.org)

The Israeli government has failed to comply with at least one measure in the legally binding order from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in South Africa’s genocide case, Human Rights Watch said today. Citing warnings about “catastrophic conditions” in Gaza, the court ordered Israel on January 26, 2024, to “take...

Zaktor ,

COVID is not really the strong point differentiator you may think it would be. Depending on where you draw the line of responsibility it’s a pretty close tally.

Zaktor ,

What? That’s not even the type of line being referenced. It’s when in time you divide the deaths. Which would be obvious if you read the link.

Zaktor ,

“Corruption machine stops generating money when it’s no longer a corruption machine.”

Zaktor ,

The unfortunate thing is that the result will just be more money for the NRA.

Zaktor ,

According to a screenshot shared by a user on social media platform X, Gemini was asked whether PM Modi is a ‘fascist’, to which the platform responded that he has been “accused of implementing policies some experts have characterised as fascist,” which based on factors like the “BJP’s Hindu nationalist ideology, its crackdown on dissent, and its use of violence against religious minorities”.

LOL. Get fucked fascist.

Also, Google is definitely gonna cave.

Zaktor ,

I appreciate the words more than any pixels Reddit would sold to you.

Zaktor ,

I can’t tell if the Bluesky team is bad at business or planning some sort of eventual rug pull. They’re certainly a for-profit corporation without any evident way to generate profit, and their words and theoretical design all sound like they’re not easily compatible with profit, but multiple profit-focused entities have given them a lot of money for something that, if implemented as envisioned, will not make them any richer.

My only guess is some form of Embrace-Extend-Extinguish where the core server is better than the rest of the network, but the network exists to assuage fears about another social network implosion or protect from potential antitrust issues while not being a real threat, but it feels like a complicated way to make Twitter 2.0 and get rich.

As long as there’s a profit motive involved, enshittification seems like the expected conclusion. We could just be at step one. From Doctorow’s description of the enshittification cycle:

Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die.

Zaktor ,

Mastodon not being Twitter has been part of my ongoing description of it when asked. If you liked Twitter because you might rub elbows with important people, watch the drama in real time, or go algorithmically viral for a sick burn (or alternately something cool), you’re not going to get any of that on Mastodon. If you want microblogging to subscribers, it’s got that. If old school “people actively shared me” virality is enough, it’s got that. But it’s not going to replace Twitter, because Twitter was a culture and an algorithm as much as it was a microblogging site.

If Lemmy had more people it could be almost a 1-for-1 Reddit replacement (still a little confusing with multiple communities of the same name/topic). Mastodon can’t do that for Twitter.

Zaktor ,

Public benefit companies are for-profit, they just can’t be sued for not maximizing it.
