Some languages have to optimize it with various tricks. There’s a good reason why I call heavily functional “programmer wankery”. It took me a while to run into an issue that was caused by a variable modified in a wrong way, which I fixed by saving the value of the variable before a call that seems to alter it. How can I find those more professional sites? I’d need some, as it’s sometimes hard to find info on OS API, as “it’s bad practice to not use Johnny’s Janky and Bloated Everything Library (JJBEL), that still handles XInput controllers through the DirectInput API, but it also has other extras”. I’ve had issues with RawInput under Windows (with that, in theory, I can use Xbox One/Series controllers to their fullest potential), and all I get is either SEO-ridden advertisements for existing libraries (which wouldn’t be a problem if they didn’t have massive problems), or tutorials for said libraries. Since I’m working with D, I have to interface to C calls, which wouldn’t be a problem if they were documented properly and in an accessible way.

My own D native and less bloated SDL replacement’s (iota) development got halted for getting null for device pointers no matter what, and with no proper instructions on how to resolve it.

It has a “chicken or egg” problem. There are better alternatives, except many don’t use them because their userbase is still on Xitter, and said userbase don’t want to move away from Xitter because their faves are still there. Issues are:

  1. Professional audio is nearly nonexistent on Linux, save for some pretty well done API. You’re stuck with default drivers, and the main DAW for Linux (Ardour) interprets the “free and open-source” a little bit liberally (pre-compiled versions are paid, and there’s no guides on how to build them). LMMS fortunately does not suffer from such issues, and is a pretty good free alternative for FL Studio.
  2. As long as Windows will be mainstream, development needs there too. As a game developer, I prefer to primarily develop on Windows (since most gaming is done there), and I find a lot of issues with how stuff on Linux is being done. And since I found a pretty good debugger for Windows, I also started to prefer that too.
  3. Linux still suffers from what I call “developer comfort of UX discomfort”. Basically it stems from the devs getting comfortable with bad UX, then refuse to fix it due to a multitude of excuses, including gems like “wanting to avoid spoonfeeding the users” and “introducing users to the beauty of scripting”.

it multiplies by using a complex set of gate arrays that do some adding, otherwise hardware multipliers are like multiplier tables built up by logic gates. Early CPUs did multiplication by adding (essentially multiplications are just recursively adding the same numbers to themselves), and if you were lucky it was optimized to use bit-shifts.

Division is a lot more complicated though. I did some optimization by multiplying with reciprocals instead, but speed gain was negligible due to memory bandwith limitations.
