Why do all the new TVs expect me to have a platform AS WIDE as the fucking thing?? Fucking shit!! God awful absolutely dumb thoughtless design choice (lemmy.world)

luckily this is just a 32; i had a 70 from the same brand with the same INSANELY FUCKING STUPID STAND DESIGN that i had to find something for…literally at the most extreme edges of the thing, what the fuck is this? this is so fucking stupid, it cannot be meaningfully cheaper than a proper design and it looks fucking dumb as...

Or you can just buy one for < $60 to fit your particular use case exactly

EU stops advertising on X over hate speech. Fines could follow next year (www.cnn.com)

EU stops advertising on X over hate speech. Fines could follow next year::The European Union is pulling its advertisements from Elon Musk’s X for now, citing an “alarming increase” in hate speech and disinformation on the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Wrench ,

I get, and approve of, ending your sponsorship via ads. But I don’t think legal recourse should be rewarded.

Any business transaction has risk. If you decide to advertise on Superbowl, you’re putting your chips on NFL.

If you’re advertising on Twitter, after the Musk purchase, your money is on Musk and Twitters staff to continue the value. If Musk says stupid shit that devalues your investment… well, that’s on you for putting your money on it, and not exercising your exit clause a year ago.

They like the idea of a catastrophic event out of their control, or caused by sinners. They don’t like to be the cause because of their own greed and indifference.

20 years ago, I could rent a 1 bedroom small apartment for under $1k. Now you’re lucky to find the same for $2.5k. Pay has not more than doubled. They definitely have it worse than us.

Wrench ,

Lol, what? The American tradition has always, in the last century, been to move out as an adult and work your way up into a house and raise a family. On your own. What hell are you calling traditional? Farmer families from the 1800s?

Google is ‘crooked’ and a bully, CEO of Fortnite-maker Epic Games testifies in Play Store trial (fortune.com)

Google is ‘crooked’ and a bully, CEO of Fortnite-maker Epic Games testifies in Play Store trial::Epic alleges that Google has been engaged in illegal price-gouging by collecting commissions ranging from 15% to 30% on in-app digital transactions.

Wrench ,

I think you misunderstand. They didn’t bring games that were exclusive to consoles, to PC. They took the idea of exclusives to PC app markets. I.E. paying game studios for exclusive rights to distribute on PC. It’s anti competitive and a completely artificial limitation, since obviously, for PC games, the hardware is the same regardless of Steam or Epic app stores. And that violates a long standing core value for many PC gamers as an entirely open market.

Wrench ,

That’s basically what video game AI is, and we’re happy enough to call it that

And noticeably it trended way up after Musk went in and fired a lot of people doing jobs that he considered a waste of money.

Like moderation.

Wrench ,

DeWalt too. Got a table saw that shipped with a broken part, and their contact us form was broken. Eventually gave up and bought a replacement part off Amazon. Someone got a promotion for reducing claims.

Wrench ,

Ahh, yes. The unplanned lunch break when you need a hard reboot because your environment is fucky.

And that reboot after update is guaranteed, because you haven’t restarted in weeks due to how long it takes

Decades old bugs aren’t uncommon on Microsoft products.

I’m in southern California. Been wanting an old truck to enable a woodworking hobby, but it’s hard to find listings for 20 year old trucks with standard bed for under 10k. 20 years old…

Wtf, Honda elements are trendy? We used to rag on my friends element because it was like half plastic. Can’t imagine that has aged well.

I’ve considered it, but my driveway is steep, and I’m dubious about my ability to back up with a trailer.

Sounds like highway robbery. Literally.

They also like to throw up temporary construction signs with adjusted speed limits without actually doing construction.

Fucking parasites.

Yep. And his pet projects that he personally drives always crash and burn. He’s the one that pushed the autopilot feature hard despite his engineers publicly objecting.

Hey, worked for that mobile app that sold for like $2k and just showed some shiny bling animation

How is this any different from networks firing hosts / pulling content because sponsors threaten to pull their ads?

I’m fully on the “fuck corps that cave to China’s childish demands” side. I’m still boycotting Blizzard after the Free HK scandal.

But I think it’s their choice to capitulate for access to China’s market, and it’s my choice to stop doing business with them as a result. I don’t think it’s the government’s place to essentially tell a company they can’t do business in China, unless it’s literally a national security thing like electronics with Spyware / backdoors.

Wrench ,

My city has a number of agencies that offer at home pet care. Even house visits of a range of levels of vet care. There are full on vets, and lots more vet techs.

I’ll bet. This coward was out to attack a frail old woman with a weapon. When he was instead met with a frail old man, he was out matched.

Don’t worry, bandwidth will still be shit because of all the spy funnels and filters traffic is run through

Religious leader advocating for mass murder of innocent women and children so that his religion’s Armageddon can come to pass.

How is this not classified as a cult and squashed?

Also, does he really think that supporting genocide is buying him a ticket to heaven? Really?

Wrench ,

That’s it! I was trying to figure out what the stretched botox face and lip filler combo reminded me of. Besides wine and opioid cocktails.

Wrench ,

My guess is the handyman special. Bought the wrong hardware for another client months ago, and finally found a sucker that bought the “hey, I have a brand new sink that never got installed from another job collecting dust. I’ll hook you up”

Wrench ,

The point is that people on lemmy (and reddit, and other left leaning forums) tend to dump on people who object to protestors disrupting shit, like closing roads (without a permit), etc.

And then get hypocritical when a protestor does the same thing to counter protest a popular (in this forum) cause.

Don’t get me wrong, I think this was a shitty move. But I also think fucking over completely unrelated people’s days by blocking traffic is also a shit way to conduct a protest.

Wrench ,

That was the only truly abysmal early access experience I’ve had. I randomly heard about it, and picked it up in “bedrock beta”. Nothing worked. At all. It should have been pre-alpha internal testing only at that point, but they were selling early access.

Never went back to give it another shot. Maybe it evolved into a decent game, but it left a very bad taste in my mouth to advertise early access on a not even working proof of concept level of work.

Wrench ,

Gig worker versus someone providing a service to the general public. A wedding photographer is not on the job until you both accept the terms and sign a contract.

Besides, do you really want a wedding photographer that doesn’t want to be there and has to be legally forced?

Wrench ,

I think restraining orders, at least temporary ones, have a low threshold. Basically an unsubstantiated accusation is enough.

It’s supposed to be to protect the vulnerable, but can also be abused. Domestic abuse is complicated, and often comes down to “he said she said” muddy water without much provable fact.

Wrench ,

I could have bought a decent house alone, albeit uncomfortably. But I was happy enough in my condo. Now I have a wife and dual income, and we’d have to really stretch for a shitty house on the outskirts. And neither of our wages have changed much.

You got a source for that, besides simply being a member of the GOP in s location where there is no plausible alternative?

Source: rural Alabama and a basic understanding of political party distribution in the US

Wrench ,

Get a grip. I asked for a source that the person, who you all are celebrating the suicide of, was actually a terrible person or partook in the persecution of others.

That was the assertion that I was responding to, and none of that was mentioned in any source in this thread besides wild assumptions by people simply for being in the republican party in a small town.

Wrench , (edited )

I think their point was, the US supports Isreal and Ukraine, but Ukraines support was conditional on them waging a humane war in self defense, but Isreal has no such restrictions, and the US has been incredibly slow to question them.

Edit - NM, re-read. It’s simpler than that. Ukraine defending itself - good. Hamas defending itself (from a US ally) - bad.

It does kind of stretch “defending themselves” a bit far if it lumps the initial attack. Like, I get how you could somewhat justify it by saying it was the result of decades of apartheid oppression, but targeting innocents isn’t exactly a great way go about that, and why most instantly rallied behind Ukraine after Russia started their war by indiscriminately targeting civilians as well.

Wrench ,

Storing is done once by simply offering a 4k option*.

Bandwidth is an ongoing cost per view, but no where near the increased plan cost to cover it.

*technically more than once because of distributed CDNs which would need to scale to demand. But negligible.

Stop up voting Newsweek. They are not a reputable publication.

Wrench ,

The fact check link posted by the other user is good.

Newsweek tends to take some news fact, often not even fact but a possible outcome of some developing story, and write a full opinion piece on a tangent.

We get a lot of Salon articles here doing the same thing.

As far as reputable, I would say apnews, Reuters, politico, CNN, BBC off the top of my head.

I know CNN will be contested. They have an annoying amount of opinion in their stories, but I do find that they clearly separate what’s objective fact and what’s editorial opinion.

Tl;Dr? Don’t know anything about the company or CEO. But I can see the value of shared workspaces for remote employees who want to work in an office away from home distractions.and I can see why the pandemic would fuck that business model sideways.

Israeli Rabbis call on Netanyahu to bomb Gaza hospital (www.newsweek.com)

The letter posted on Israeli journalist Amit Segal channel to 184,000 followers says that "the nation of Israel will stand up bravery to strike at its enemies," according to a translation of the Hebrew. It goes on to justify targeting sites even "when the enemy hides behind a human shield."

Newsweek is getting to the front page way too fucking much. And the community is eating it up like it’s a reliable source.

Wrench ,

There has been an uptick in violence against groups that the far right Christian white demographic target regularly.

That’s not just limited to semites or muslims.

Wrench ,

Would usually be hard to prove intent on the second one, but just the threat of it would probably stop a good bit of this nonsense.

Well, any felony currently blocks you from voting, so I don’t see how a more selective block with the same consequences would do anything at all to discourage what they’re already doing.

Wrench ,

It sure is here.

I’ll say that the real estate agent business isn’t exactly like a normal job. You work for hours, then the client can pull out etc, and you get nothing. Particularly on the buying side when potential buyers can just give up.

But in today’s market, those standards percentages are fucking massive because of housing inflation.

So, it’s definitely broken right now. But it’s also a volatile profession that is subject to high highs and low lows.

Wrench ,

Good luck with that. Temecula is pretty conservative

Wrench ,

They’re saying that they consider all Palestinians to be terrorists. It’s that simple.

Go south if you’re not a terrorist, bombed because there may be terrorists in the mix.

Don’t go south, but stay in a refuge camp. Bombed, because there may be terrorists in the mix.

They’re all terrorists or terrorist sympathizers as far as IDF is concerned.

That’s how the scientific community works. Test and retest the theory. Unexciting results are still valuable to lend more credence to the established scientific understanding.

Also, more practically, recent studies are good ammo for disputes with nutter friends and family who still form their entire distrust on an article based on an intentionally bad take on a studys results from early on in the pandemic.

Wrench ,

Yeah, I have lost causes for sure. I do have a couple more reasonable conservative friends that took a dose or two and stopped, so this is the kind of thing that might not fall on deaf ears

Wrench ,

In my experience, going to the more conservative, blue collar neighborhoods was the most reliable on availability. But that’s when there was a huge demand on the first and second round of shots, and pharmacies were taking as many vials as they could
