This has gotta be the meme that best sums up the situation lmao

UnfortunateShort ,

If nostalgia ever kicks in, German is my first language :P

UnfortunateShort ,

That and that painted nails can look good on anyone

UnfortunateShort ,

First came programmer socks, then Rust was invented, and now (fe)men are taking matters into their own hands, correcting the gender gap in IT themselves. What’s not to understand here?

Seriously tho, I don’t think it’s against anyone. It’s just a meme, probably originating from a high share of queer people in the IT domain and the rising popularity of anime and manga culture, where femboys are sometimes idealised.

UnfortunateShort ,

I’m a pansexual protestant Christian skepticist, who has not once tried to convert anyone and votes for far left parties. Please enlighten me how I’m inherently ignorant and taking your freedom.

UnfortunateShort ,

I think you understand neither what a skepticist is, nor how religion or free churches work. And by your logic I assume you have to be an anarchist, since every government that ever existed - or society for that matter - has exercised some form of suppression.

I think your overgeneralizing, intollerant way of thinking is sickening and hardly better than that of a racist or sexist.

And please don’t tell me what my beliefs are. That’s pretty church-y of you.

UnfortunateShort ,

Well you’re wrong in both, but I am curious why you would think that.

You claim I believe in an almighty being, yet this is a key point where a skepticist might disagree with your average Christian. Moreover you claim I am supporting oppression, yet you don’t even have the slightest idea what church I’m in and what they do or ever did. So you seem to have either huge misconceptions or you are prejudiced to a point where you are dismissive of anything that doesn’t fit your narrative.

I’m a pansexual protestant Christian

Are you kidding me? You told about your beliefs yourself.

This just shows how you don’t view Christians as individuals at all. Claiming to know exactly what I believe in based on that sole statement is exactly as silly as me claiming: ‘I know what you believe, because your are an atheist.’ Acting like you know a strangers beliefs for certain is arrogant to say the least.

Care to explain what that has to do with anything I said in this thread?

Well, you judge churches based on the fact that some where oppressive in the past (and yes, I know some are still today). Based on that you either have to hate pretty much all governments, since it obviously doesn’t matter whether anything have changed, or you have double standards.

And I think you resort to personal insults because you have no valid arguments against my positions.

If you feel attacked by me calling out your intolerant and overgeneralizing way of thinking, that’s just because you are unable to defend yourself against a fact. Your words leave no other conclusion than that your are extremely prejudiced against Christians. You might have expressed yourself badly once, but you doubled down on your hate and ignorance. You might have good reasons for it, but would you excuse someone being racist for having had bad encounters with an ethnic group? Just as you probably wouldn’t, neither do I excuse your statements about Christians.

UnfortunateShort ,

That’s just the resolution of back then, your eyes will adjust :P

A quick question: Does this happen without gamescope as well?

UnfortunateShort ,

That’s why you need to rock and roll

(Arch btw.)

UnfortunateShort ,

Sounds Like your average X (formerly named™️) Discussion

UnfortunateShort ,

I swear some people go out of their way to judge others for the most ridiculous things. Maybe try asking yourself why you are not happy about people finding love without going through half a dozen shitty relationships.

UnfortunateShort ,

Not when you invest in the arms industry on the winning side

UnfortunateShort ,

Tbf there are plenty CEOs who care for their company and their employees. It just so happens that investors don’t appreciate that

UnfortunateShort ,

You can be a CEO even in a communism. It’s literally just a job.

UnfortunateShort ,

That’s not true, think of all the small to medium businesses there are. All of them got “CEOs” or whatever you want to call them and in many cases they do regular work besides leading the company.

I know a quite a few people who are very happy in their respective companies. Heck, I’m employed in the perfect template of a bureaucratic, capitalist megacorp and our CEOs shield us from a lot of bullshit of the group we belong to.

I think “CEOs = bad” is oversimplifying a lot. We just don’t hear about the good ones, because ragebait sells and capitalist media is something actually fucked up at this point

UnfortunateShort ,

Isn’t h265 proprietary? Maybe they just didn’t want to pay license fees

UnfortunateShort ,

A foreign policy matter that China and I agree on? What a timeline

UnfortunateShort ,

Excuse me? Rimuru-sama has chosen his form to honour a deceased comrade and can change back to his slimy self whenever he pleases. He is not trapped in anything. If anything, he’s a trap. For anyone with a proper taste in men and men-like gelatinous creatures.

What's (are) the funniest/stupidest way(s) you've broken your linux setup?

Tinkering is all fun and games, until it’s 4 am, your vision is blurry, and thinking straight becomes a non-option, or perhaps you just get overly confident, type something and press enter before considering the consequences of the command you’re about to execute… And then all you have is a kernel panic and one thought...

UnfortunateShort ,

Accidentally deleted system Python, which on GNOME meant my DE was toast as well. Luckily very freshly set up, so no harm done.

Related note, add this in your shell profile:

bash
export PIP_REQUIRE_VIRTUALENV=true

proper scripting language
set PIP_REQUIRE_VIRTUALENV true

UnfortunateShort ,

Why people no buy our GPU anymore?

Because I can get a whole fucking console for the price of a lower midrange GPU. My only hope is Intel’s Battlemage at this point.

UnfortunateShort ,

I have an all-AMD system, but they have become too expensive as well. Just Nvidia with a 20% discount, safe for the 7900 XTX which is completely out of question for me to begin with.

UnfortunateShort ,

Great, now we need to convince Linus that anti-cheat is definitely worth being implemented in Linux or what?

Might be a fun project tho… Actually, might become the anti-cheat to rule them all. Who likes cheaters anyway? 🤔

UnfortunateShort ,

It’s kinda hard to overwhelm the job market tho, at least if the economy is growing. In that case, more workers would likely facilitate growth, since the growing workforce will also have money to spend and create demand. If the market was already very competitive, things would be different, but developed countries are usually hungry for skilled workers. Demographics dictate this will only become more true as time passes

UnfortunateShort ,

If you think the Green Party is as bad as a genuine Nazis wanting to overthrow democracy, you are either completely out of your mind or trolling

UnfortunateShort ,

The industry chases whatever makes the most money. It’s the artists who are fortunate and/or hardworking enough to not do that who I aspire - and who’s games I want to play.

UnfortunateShort ,

It’s a guide, it’s there to guide you, not to break your knees if you don’t follow it all the way

UnfortunateShort ,

That’s why there are draft merge requests nowadays. Although I kinda miss the “DONT MERGE WE GONNA DIE” comments.

Low battery life due to high power consumption on t490 thinkpad. (help needed)

So i have gotten a t490 just recently, and ive installed fedora on it, gnome power profiles daemon said it was “on my lap” and wouldn’t let me change the power profiles even when on a desk. So i masked that, and installed auto-cpufreq, but the laptop still draws about 10W (according to powertop) when watching a youtube...

UnfortunateShort ,

These probably contain everything you ever wanted to know about the topic:

wiki.archlinux.org/title/Power_managementwiki.archlinux.org/title/CPU_frequency_scaling

Be aware that some tools might be in conflict with each other. I recommend auto-cpufreq + thermald. You could add TLP to the mix, but then you need to configure it carefully to avoid conflicts.

UnfortunateShort ,

Ok, after I reading the one in my mother tongue, I can identify pretty much every word in every other language almost instantly. Interesting to think that it could be so easy to learn them and still I very likely won’t :D

UnfortunateShort ,

While I disagree with the German and Israeli governments, “you did genocide too” is not an argument for anything. You will be hard pressed to find a country that never participated in one and the current situation hardly compares to randomly invading and colonizing a country not even on the same continent as your own.

There are plenty of arguments you can find against the Israeli and my own Government, no need to resort to populist speeches.

UnfortunateShort ,

Which would still be a stupid argument, because these two alleged genocides are very different in nature, scale and also completely unrelated. I disagree that that’s the argument tho.

UnfortunateShort ,

Yes, thank you, I’ve read the article.

UnfortunateShort ,

For real tho, I’m not paying Netflix money for a single damn news outlet. The prices are absurd.

UnfortunateShort ,

For me staying up is easy in general. Give me 10h night shifts, I don’t care. As long as you never make me get up early that is.

UnfortunateShort ,

I love how in security, we have gone from “use strong passwords” to “don’t make your own passwords”, because people will just refuse to learn.

I'm so frustrated rn.

I have been distro hopping for about 2 weeks now, there’s always something that doesn’t work. I thought I would stick with Debian and now I haven’t been able to make my printer work in it, I think I tried in another distro and it just worked out of the box, but there’s always something that’s broken in every distro....

UnfortunateShort , (edited )

There is not a single distro where everything works out of the box. I would be very surprised if even Windows or MacOS work exactly like you expect, the second you boot into them the first time.

I like Arch / EndeavourOS, but you will definitely need quiet some configuration for them. If you want more user-friendly or more up-to-date Debian, try Sparky Linux. It’s honestly quite good. Instead of Ubuntu you might want to give Mint a try. Many fancy it as a more open and less corpo alternative.

Ubuntu itself is alright, but it’s being criticised for pushing anti-consumer moves lately (i.e. forcing Snaps and telemetry onto them). Also, updates on Ubuntu are extremely slow in my experience. Maybe that has changed, but in some areas I doubt it.

UnfortunateShort ,

Care to explain how you come to your harsh judgment of Debian? I’m not a fan of using it as a desktop OS either, but every other day you hear people talking about Debian having newer packages than Arch on occasion. If anything, Debian, Arch, Fedora and derivatives should give you the most recent packages.

UnfortunateShort ,

Funnily enough, Fedora is the only distro I’ve ever had and still have the infamous Linux sound driver problems with

UnfortunateShort ,

There are many reasons why their market share is so high:

  • They were there before Linux
  • They had a GUI before Linux even existed iirc (let alone before Linux’s were any good)
  • They were focused on desktop + consumer market from the start
  • They are for-profit and have a marketing budget
  • They have the Office products many depend on (be it justified or not)
  • For a long time, gaming was basically impossible on Linux
UnfortunateShort , (edited )

I still think it’s wild that people argue about what pet it is ok to eat. I mean, I didn’t really quit meat to this day and I don’t really care what animal it’s from. I care whether it was sourced ethically, at least up to my standards. I mostly refuse meat because of the horrible impact on the climate and because I can’t / don’t want to afford ethically sourced meat all too often.

UnfortunateShort ,

For example humanity has decimated predators and now needs to hunt just for population control. I consider every kill to protect the environment and keep populations stable 100% ethical.

That aside: Everything dies and if it’s not by getting mauled that’s a plus already. For me it depends on what the tradeoff for that is to be considered ethical.

UnfortunateShort ,

TBF, KDE Connect is pretty convenient for this and other stuff

UnfortunateShort ,

If only most wet wipes weren’t non-flushable (even if they say they are, many are in fact not) and terrible for the environment. Still have to find a good brand.
