The church, whichever church, sought to replace the charms and rituals that were hoped to ward off the unknown with it's own. It's often I see this pattern, with church doing "problem? try New! Improved! churchy thing!" - which then is reported to work a treat.
Sort of folkloric propaganda. Social media of it's time, corporates of their time too, using their social media pretty much as our corporates do now.
