TORFdot0 , to fediverse in Which iOS app for Lemmy?

Voyager is pretty stable and similar to Apollo. I still have issues with it saving text after posting a comment and starting a new one. As well as the text not scrolling on longer comments where I go past the initial text box. It works super solid for browsing communities though

TORFdot0 , to memes in How do you browse Lemmy?

Active is my preferred sort method. It keeps the active discussions at the top, hot I’ll switch to occasionally after I’ve browsed enough of the active feed.

Must of my subscribed communities are small enough that I don’t think top 6 hours is distinct enough from active/hot

I’m pretty sure you’d lose more than just your arm if you were close enough to lava to “plunge” any sort of member into it.

Lava is typically 1300 F/700 C. Just exposure to the heated air around it would instantly burn you all over

TORFdot0 , to mildlyinfuriating in Paid full price and got this in the mail (open box). GameStop and I have different definitions of “new”

GameStop exists to swindle WSB and crypto bros out of their investments. It’s not a real game retailer anymore or at least that portion of the business is still as shitty as it ever has been

TORFdot0 , to mildlyinfuriating in Paid full price and got this in the mail (open box). GameStop and I have different definitions of “new”

If you have multiple Nintendo switches in your household (read- kids) and everyone has their own account then buying digital doesn’t make sense. I don’t buy from GameStop as a rule because my local game shop is better in every way but I wouldn’t blame someone who bought from them as not every city has a thriving local game scene

TORFdot0 , to technology in US rejects AI copyright for famous state fair-winning Midjourney art

The scene isn’t copyrighted, anyone could go to the scene (theoretically) and take their own photo from a different angle. What’s copyrighted is the expression that went into staging the shot.

An AI tool is the one doing the creative expression when generating its images is the argument. The prompt is where the creative expression of the user ends, and copyrighting just a phrase seems ridiculous. I tend to agree with these sort of arguments, especially when models like this are often trained on other people’s copyright work.

TORFdot0 , to memes in The EU has finally won this one!

Lighting was a good cable when apple made the switch from 30 pin connector and android was still trying to figure out whether they would use microUSB, miniUSB, and whatever the sam hell this is. And there was no interoperability

Once USB became the standard their was no real reason to hold onto lightning other than it being proprietary and them wanting to hand hold their users

TORFdot0 , to reddit in How many people actually dropped Reddit for Lemmy?

At least one, because I did. Totally uninstalled the app and only use the website for obscure google queries where Reddit is the only meaningful result

TORFdot0 , to technology in Calls to violence are appearing on the conspiracy subreddit over a gun order from New Mexico’s governor

Before 2016 the most popular posts that would occasionally reach /r/all were UAP and cryptid posts but there has always been an uncomfortable contingent there. Yes it became unusable after 2016 which led to it getting quarantined but it always had a problematic content you just wouldn’t see it browsing /r/all

Where’s Robert Downey Jr when you need him?

TORFdot0 , to technology in Wyze security camera owners reported that they could briefly see feeds from cameras they didn’t own

I think you’d be surprised how many cameras have NAT-Traversal turned on and can be accessed via web/app even behind a router.

TORFdot0 , to technology in Wyze security camera owners reported that they could briefly see feeds from cameras they didn’t own

I’d argue that it’s more convenient to have clouds connect for recording and storage purposes but so many cameras come with SD cards built in now that the cloud storage isn’t even really an advantage anymore either.

TORFdot0 , to games in Do you find the description Live Service Game off-putting?

I don’t have the time to play live service games. The next time I play a game it might be completely different? No appeal to me at all

TORFdot0 , to technology in US broadband grant rules shut out small ISPs and municipalities, advocates say

I actually worked at a small ISP that served a population of <10,000 a decade ago and we had no problem getting grants the last time Obama was handing them out

TORFdot0 , to technology in US broadband grant rules shut out small ISPs and municipalities, advocates say

Edit: I missed the part where municipalities in certain states are allowed to get LOCs due to state law, so the grant program would exclude ISPs directly owned by the municipality. To me that is a state issue rather than a fed issue, especially as the NTIA says it will waive the requirement on a case-by-case basis

I’m sorry except for the smallest WISPs (which wouldn’t qualify as broadband anyway), how does requiring a letter of credit from a bank represent a barrier? Carrier grade equipment is not cheap, nobody is paying is paying cash for it. So they should have a good relationship with a community bank anyway.
