It’s about making something that is reliable and reproducible.

Reliable and reproducible are two problems already solved with the solutions I provided.

By definition something that executes JS and parses CSS is a browser.

and yes it’s lighter than windows, proved by ubuntu being recomended for lightweight OS

Absolutely not. It gets recommended as a lightweight OS because 1) there are delusional people and 2) if you remove and stop everything on Windows 10 that you don’t it will be faster, way faster than anything running GNOME.

The problem isn’t the OS per si, the problem is the UI. GNOME is SLOW as hell and even if the OS behind it is way more efficient than Windows it will lose against a debloated Windows 10 setup because Window’s UI is fully native and way faster.

These distros are all about making thing that were easy into complex, “locked down”, “inflexible”, bullshit to justify jobs and payed tech stacks / some property solution existence.

We had Ansible, containers, ZFS and BTRFS that provided all the required immutability needed already but someone decided that is is time to transform regular machines into MIPS-style shitty devices that have a read-only OSes and a separate partition for configs. All in the hopes of eventually selling some orchestration and/or other proprietary repository / platform / BS like Docker / Kubernetes does.

@TCB13@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah sure, keep working in your delusions.

GNOME Shell is tightly integrated with Mutter, a compositing window manager and Wayland compositor. It is based upon Clutter to provide visual effects and hardware acceleration.[20] According to GNOME Shell maintainer[21] Owen Taylor, it is set up as a Mutter plugin largely written in JavaScript[22] and uses GUI widgets provided by GTK+ version 3.

And yes, GNOME is slower than Windows, KDE and Xfce. Always has been, always will be. It might be polished but it is slow.

Except for GNOME cause the DE is essentially a browser engine and CSS themes :)

What interface are you using? USB or FDD?

TCB13 , to linux in IDE Floppy Disk + Debian: anything to consider?
@TCB13@lemmy.world avatar

Yes USB is the way to go, cheap and effective: www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002747925791.html

Also the native Linux driver for floppy drives is on its way out: itsfoss.com/end-of-floppy-disk-in-linux/ note that USB solutions will still work.

+1 for the internal usb header tip.

And… I can’t afford to have documents screwed up because Libre/Open/OnlyOffice aren’t the real deal… and I need to use MS Teams, Excel, Project and have data flowing between each other and Dynamics Nav. All those things Linux native Office solutions can’t do, nor Office Online and certainly not Wine.

TCB13 , to linux in Which version of a distro to install?
@TCB13@lemmy.world avatar

then using a generic image might lead to critical components not working, or the entire system not working, right?

Yes, that’s why you should either use manufacturer images or Armbian (lemmy.world/comment/4609514). Generic images might also underperform in your board, the GPIO and other low level components will, most likely, not work and you might burn your storage as logging and other I/O intensive operations aren’t tweaked for SD/eMMC.

@TCB13@lemmy.world avatar

Checkout www.armbian.com/rock64/

Run Armbian, it is Debian optimized for SBCs, that one specifically for your board. Armbian has a very good track record and sometimes is the only option after manufacturers stop creating images for their old boards.

Generic images might underperform in your board, the GPIO and other low level components will, most likely, not work and you might burn your storage as logging and other I/O intensive operations aren’t tweaked for SD/eMMC. Armbian aims to fix all those issues and provides continuous system and kernel updates long after the manufacturer stops doing so.

To be fair I don’t trust whatever a Chinese SBC manufacturer ships for their own boards, how much spyware / calling home that will include? How messed up and mangled the kernel and the OS is? You can eventually run into issues when you least expect it.

TCB13 , to linux in Misconceptions About Immutable Distributions
@TCB13@lemmy.world avatar

Yes and you did very well on that and I believe as well you can understand my POV on immutable distros after all the posts did. We’re most likely creating the next Docker / Docker Hub / Kubernetes BS by pushing them and immutability was proven by MIPS to be clusterfuck.

TCB13 , to linux in Has anyone managed to backup an iPhone with iTunes and bottle or wine?

Naaa it’s just that Wine sucks, overpromises and underdelivers. And people tend to have delusions about it.

TCB13 , to linux in Who here uses a less popular Linux distribution? What made you choose it?

Here is the thing, I used to think in the same way you do, but then Flatpak happened and that kind of delivers the best of both worlds on Debian. Rock solid and stable base OS with the latest apps with Flatpak. Bonus feature, doesn’t pollute the system.
