Well who doesn’t require some kind of propriety software for their job? The big problem is collaboration and as someone said, if everyone is into a propriety solution and you’re on an alternative you’re going to have a bad time.

Why do most people use Linux instead of Windows to host their servers, then?

Because Linux is good at that, well supported at that and the people use it. When it comes to the desktop is the exact same opposite. That’s kind of the point of the entire thing, Linux is great at certain things but certainly not as a desktop because it fails for all those use cases that compose the majority of what people do.

Well at least you spent an hour on the phone and got it fixed. If you had the same issue under Linux it would be days of compiling stuff and most likely having to wait for the next big release to get it fixed. Meanwhile zero work done :)

Also your hardware must be really awkward / fucked up / old… because if every Windows installation behaved like that then entire countries would not work at all.

Wrong: this is the only thing that matters, the rest is wishful thinking and delusions.

Collaboration with other Adobe users? Same thing with Office. If one lives in a bubble and doesn’t to collaborate with others then native Linux apps might work and might even deliver a decent workflow. Once you’ve to collaborate with others who use Windows/Mac it’s game over – the “alternatives” aren’t just up to it.

The thing with what you posted is that… none of it is wrong if you value iPad-style user-friendly above all. In the say way I value productivity and not having waste time fixing stuff that works out of the box under Windows.

Because… it’s NOT just a file access thing. There are dozens of issues discussion that problem - that affects other browser extensions that also need to communicate other desktop apps - and no universal solution. Not even a working solution in most cases.

+1 for Jitsi. Great suggestion.

And the best thing is that under Debian 12 you’ve LXD on the Debian repository, no need to install snaps and other crap. It is now a fully supported and solid thing.

Exactly what I usual say, the best of the two worlds. There are still a few annoyance though, the theme integration part that is easy to fix and not being able to get Ungoogled working with a KeePassXC when both are Flatpaks

?? LXD can run VMs as well.

Okay, that’s fair. For full desktops an LXD container with xrdp is a better option (eg. www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JrI0m9u3jY) and one day I’ll get one of those working with GPU acceleration.

TCB13 , to linux in The Flaws of Flatpak - What do you think about Flatpak Security?
@TCB13@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, that works really well and whatnot. Totally reliable way of doing it. :P

Because the flatpak components/dependencies of a program can differ depending on the host (for example if you have an NVIDIA card, it will pull some NVIDIA dependencies), so if you export a program from a non-NVIDIA system to the other, it won’t be complete to work reliably on the new system, but the missing parts can be downloaded on the Internet, it’s still reducing the bandwidth requirement.

For anyone interested: docs.flatpak.org/en/latest/usb-drives.html and dataswamp.org/…/2023-01-01-flatpak-export-import.…

gtk Broadway

I never quite understood that project and what limitations that thing has, for instance applications aren’t usually exclusively and purely GTK, them what happens? You get a black square?

@TCB13@lemmy.world avatar

At home, I use a personal package mirror for that. It has the benefit of also running periodic replications on schedule* to be available as a target that auto updates work from

Yes that’s a great option if it the machine hosting that can access the internet… but I’ve to keep ISOs for the other situation and older versions that might get audited at any time. Either way, Jigdo can be used to update ISO images as well.
