I would consider buying a refurbished iPod classic on eBay. Simple and elegant. User friendly. Do you really need the Bluetooth part?

The only issue with those is the price + modding the disk to SD card + restrictions on the number of songs the OS can handle and whatnot. They’re cool and great indeed but not as perfect as one would think.

Implemented in python with the initial goal of “bridging every chat platform in existence” is just bound to be a disaster.

Just like Chia, who on their right minds would do those things in Python.

TCB13 , to selfhosted in Do you run a private CA? Could you tell me about your certificate setup if you do?
@TCB13@lemmy.world avatar

Written in go, very small and portable: github.com/FiloSottile/mkcert. There’s also step-ca, bigger and uses ACME to deploy certificates, never used it tho.

Just be awake of the risks involved with running your own CA.

If you don’t setup and monitor things properly everything fails and keep going in an unpredictable state - even a software RAID.

No, but it only happens because this tech exists in the first place and things got way more cumbersome and way overcomplicated than they should be.

moving to AGPL is “less permissive” than the apache license they currently use? no.

Oh yes, but it is.

Apache > You can do what you like with the software, as long as you include the required notices. AGPL > You may do what you like BUT you need to track changes and provide the source code - this essentially kills any company trying to build a product around it.

What about… just NO.

Matrix is developed by a for profit entity, a group of venture capitalists and having a spec doesn’t mean everything. The way Matrix is designed is to force into jumping through hoops and kind of draw all attention to Matrix itself instead of the end result

For all the people about to downvote:

Decentralized communication protocol Matrix shifts to less-permissive AGPL open source license Element, the company and core developer behind the decentralized communication protocol known as Matrix, has announced a notable license change that will make the open source project just that little bit less appealing for companies looking to build on top of it.

I realize that end2end encryption with XMPP doesn’t seem as strong as something like Matrix

This isn’t true.

TCB13 , to selfhosted in Do you configure your servarr docker containers from one docker-compose file, or individual ones?
@TCB13@lemmy.world avatar

No Docker, because overhead and depending on a semi-closed ecosystem isn’t cool. Also systemd is perfectly capable of providing all the security docker does by itself.

WD Red are the quieter you can find and they can spin down if you configure them to do so. Seagate Exos drives are the most loud and annoying drives you can get, they won’t also spin down no matter what you set their config to.

I’ve never heard of “noise” being an issue for an hdd - especially if you have it in any sort of enclosure. If you’re not sitting right next to it you shouldn’t notice.

No. I can’t stand the noise of HDDs.

^this. but I’ll go even further, do you @mypasswordis1234 really need RAID? How much date are you planning to write every day?

In some case, like a typical home users with a few writes per day or even week simply having a second disk that is updated every day with rsync may be a better choice. Consider that if you’re two mechanical disks spinning 24h7 they’ll most likely fail at the same time (or during a RAID rebuild) and you’ll end up loosing all your data. Simply having one active disk (shared on the network and spinning) and the other spun down and only turned on once a day with a cron rsync job mean your second disk will last a LOT longer and you’ll be safer.
