TCB13 , to linux in Should i switch from systemd to another init system, What are the advantages of using another init system?
@TCB13@lemmy.world avatar

Init scripts aren’t config files, they’re directly executable code.

Yes and that’s exactly the problem.

I just spent about 12hrs trying to get Portainer to cooperate and had to give up

If you don’t use Docker / Portainer and friends your life gets easier very quickly. Also you’ll waste less resources.

TCB13 , to linux in Tips for switching to Debian from Ubuntu?
@TCB13@lemmy.world avatar

Install your base system and get every app you need using flatpak. That way you’ll get the latest versions without poluting your system. It even integrated with the GNOME Software “store” GUI: flatpak.org/setup/Debian

TCB13 , to linux in what's everybody's thoughts on Alma and Rocky Linux?
@TCB13@lemmy.world avatar

Interesting… I’ve been using it mostly on HP laptops and everything has been working out of the box perfectly since ever. Even the custom keys and stuff.

That’s the problem, Debian did welcome them with open arms… they decided to left and fork.

TCB13 , to linux in Should i switch from systemd to another init system, What are the advantages of using another init system?
@TCB13@lemmy.world avatar

If that’s the case you can simply run systemd configured as it comes with most distritos and enjoy.

Yeah, I just have a question about that community. Debian maintainers told them they were open to a multi init architecture (as in have Debian support both systemd and init) as long as they maintained it, they just rumbled around and decided to fork Debian instead. This is the kind of people we’re dealing with.

I don’t dislike them, I never disliked them… I simply came to like systemd’s efficiency more.

systemd-analyze isn’t only about reducing your boot time by 5 seconds, it’s about when you’ve problems knowing exactly what is happening and when and also about having a clear view of dependencies between services.

@TCB13@lemmy.world avatar

It’s not gymnastics, it’s years and years of init bullshit and fragmentation / lack of integration related issues that were solved by systemd.

Well hardware suppliers still sell IdeaPads to companies. But you see them small things… that lack of proper EF shielding doesn’t happen in HP consumer lines.

TCB13 , to linux in how to interpret this, yay output?
@TCB13@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, you most likely don’t need it. You can just add whatever apt repository for your favorite tools or use flatpak.
