@prachisrivas @academicchatter Tempting even across the pond - though I'm not affiliated with any of the orgs

@prachisrivas @academicchatter Sounds terrific! I miss going to the BCCE (Biennial Conf for Chem Ed) - I learned so much about Chem Ed and pedagogy there. Am trying to do new educational things now with new technologies (remote automated lab). So no research pubs on this - but would be nice to try and highlight education impacts and potential - and learn what's happening (globally) in Ed+tech etc.

idk that I can/should do this as a convener tho

Idea:

Bookstores should group fantasy with horror instead of scifi. Both fantasy and horror are purely creations of the author's mind; scifi is tethered to factual information.

If you need to group scifi, I'd put it with mysteries and thrillers.

This was 25+ yrs ago now but I'll not forget it. Visiting a friend in grad school at Duke and we walk into a (mostly used) bookstore in Durham, NC. I was looking rebuild by my SF collection so I go straight to the SF section and there I find: Charles Darwin's Origin of the Species.

So the good news continues as my book, Where Rivers Go To Die, makes it to the longlist for Best Collection, shortly after it became a finalist at the Philip K Dick Awards. Yay!

The BSFA this year is a very long list with lots of good books to discover and put on your reading list for 2024.

In 1911, George de Hevesy had the sneaking suspicion that the kitchen of his boarding house cafeteria was reusing leftovers in their soup.

So he came up with a plan and sneakily sprinkled a small amount of radioactive material in his leftover meat. A few days later, he measured the radioactivity in the prepared food – catching his landlady red-handed. It was the first successful radioactive tracer experiment.
