Requirements to put in a job description to discourage or filter out autistic people:

  • Comfortable with ambiguity
  • Strong people skills
  • Good culture fit
  • Multitasking
  • A fast-paced dynamic environment
  • Bachelor's degree or better

I see these things and think you don't want my >30 years of programming and machine learning experience, or my problem-solving skills and comprehensive knowledge that had people mistaking me for one of the team's PhDs, or my solutions that have proven patent-worthy. Your loss.

I have an entire masking routine for eye contact because I discovered the limits of what makes people uncomfortable. It's based on my heartbeats, flickering and emphasis stressing. It's also so stupid, eye contact typically doesn't give much information compared to, say, shoulder tension.

It's frustrating.

I have lost track of people I've recommended Snow, Glass Apples to!

There is a fantastic 'audio play' version of it, as well, by Seeing Ear Theater, which is very interesting- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELJTJbuuFcU

(amusingly I tried to find it under 'listening eye theater' which is -not- the name!).

All these stories are great.

Kai Winn would definitely run to be on the school board and the first item on the agenda would be banning books.

I mean, she did that!

How dare you teach science in our school, and allow these children to read facts!

It was a whole thing! Honestly it wasn't even really resolved, they just sort of shrugged and moved on with the general plot, in one of the weaker endings of an episode, I think.

But her arguments are pretty much the same ones being used now.

@actuallyautistic Does anybody else out there actually prefer reading to watching TV? I find my own imagination creating the characters and scenery from what I am reading to be far more entertaining than what I watch on TV. LOL, I am such a geek. 🤓 😹

I personally like to have 'background noise' tv show or movie on monitor 2. I haven't powered my actual 'tv' in about 3, maybe 4 years.

Occasionally I'll sit down and focus on a TV show, but it's pretty rare.

Books, however, are constant. I'm always, always reading. I don't actually typically cast people in books visually (I have strong issues with visualization in general), but I enjoy them signifcantly more.

I genuinely wish I could process audio books. I simply can't make that...connection with them, in whatever form. I have incredibly hard times processing audio streams of information in a usable, retrievable, or even comprehensible format.

Maybe something like listening to a numbers station over smooth jazz, and trying to remember the fibinacii sequence numbers, in order (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, etc, while paying attention).

Give me a document.

@housepanther @hannu_ikonen @actuallyautistic There was a line in a TV show, Burn Notice of all things, that stuck with me. It was something like 'lip reading is very hard. Confirming what you can half hear, however, is very easy.'

And....yes. exactly that. I can map facial cues to mostly parsed audio very well ( though nowadays I mostly go with subtitles on everything).

I assume you have seen the yelp court case in Texas about those fake centers?

I genuinely don't know enough law to have any sense of how this is going to shake out, but it's...something.
