Every time an author states that borrowing from a library "steals" sales from them, I want to scream.

Publishers have indoctrinated authors against libraries, to authors' own detriment. Libraries buy your book, and if it gets popular, they buy more copies--but more, they introduce readers to your work, and those readers will spread the word, even if they don't buy your books themselves.

are unpaid marketing. Be thankful.

I'm a US author, and every writer I know supports and loves public libraries.

One of the things we did "back in the day" (say early 2000's) was have author groups where maybe 5-10 authors were in a group, we had a website, a newsletter, I guess now there'd be social media presence, and we each agreed to promote the group in each others' newsletters .... I suppose that's out of fashion, but just thinking I'd love to get more 👀 on my books.

@KitMuse @bookstodon have you tried Bookfunnel? You can join forces with other authors on group promos.

@KitMuse @bookstodon I think there is a low cost tier that is something like $20/year.

haha I also have the problem of wall space. All my shelves are double loaded as it is, and there are boxes of books tucked into corners and closets and under tables. In general, I still prefer print books but I do have a Kindle, which is nice for travel and night reading when I have insomnia and don't want to disturb my husband. My personal library is around 2700 books, not including my husband's. I am TheGalaxyGirl on

What are your thoughts on DNF (Did Not Finish)-ing books? Do you feel guilty about it? Do you worry you missed out on something? Or are you confident in dropping a book and reaching for the next one?

At what point are you most likely to DNF, if ever? What sorts of things cause you to DNF?

My friend, book blogger Kriti, was musing on these questions a while back, and it sparked this new post: https://armedwithabook.com/dealing-with-dnf-the-practice-of-did-not-finish/

@skaeth @bookstodon I used to always finish, but now that I'm older, I am more likely to not finish. I generally give it a good chance, 25% or 100 pages. I will DNF if the writing is poor, if the story is offensive in some way, if it seems too derivative (nothing but tropes), or if it just fails to hold my interest. I have gotten halfway through a book and dropped it because I realize it isn't worth my time to finish. Reading should be enjoyable and/or educational, not a chore.
