But today Microsoft announced that it is finally adding two features that could make the app a bit more useful for power users: support for Photoshop-esque image layers and the ability to open and save transparent PNGs.

What kind of person is an MS Paint power user. I just use it to paste screenshots into if I'm not intending fine editing, otherwise it might as well not exist as a program.

The only person who seriously uses MS Paint for artwork is that one guy who recreated the Mona Lisa out of hundreds of pieces of variously burnt toast. Real, usable art tools would destroy the purpose and make that guy sad.

Really, if they kept this kind of momentum up for the next 20 years, it might put it on par with Fire Alpaca. It's an interesting move, they're just so incredibly late to the game that even other free programs are still leagues better than they are and no one will ever take them seriously again.

This is acceptable. This is definitely normal.

Side note for anyone with a few days and $2 to spare, Orwell is apparently on sale and I encourage its consideration. It's literally what the government has decided to do, but with the player in the driver's seat and it's really good if you're into stuff like that.

What other countries. I thought it was supposed to be Americans didn't know geography and didn't care to remember anyone else existed.

In order for us to expend some sort of energy making fun of someone, we'd have to both think of you and work ourselves up to caring about people we know little about in places we'll literally never visit. I'd have to look up new slurs and read up on international politics and shit.

That sounds like a lot, if I'm being honest, and I'd rather rag on Ohio.

Is this...what all memes would be like under communism? I mean, I'm actually disappointed irl about the effort here. You've scraped a hole in the bottom of the barrel. Perhaps in search of potatoes.

As to why he would defend that, it's just simple relationship bias. We'll hesitate a hell of a lot more if it's someone we like or think we know.

You should have seen the irrational tenacity with which one of my parents stuck by a pedophile, right up until their first few nights in prison, simply because they were dating. Even if it meant losing everyone around her. She was the only person under god who couldn't see this a mile away. His own kid was his first accuser, but surely not, right?

What kind of thing could your best friends do that you wouldn't initially defend them over?

These two have known each other for literal decades. I'm not too surprised he would refuse to accept it from someone he's been friends with for that long.

I am shocked that he would choose to step down entirely over it. I could see the question presenting itself to him, since it's...not wonderful PR...but I would have thought the cause itself would have been more important to him. He's between a rock and a hard place.

Chiming in, it feels super weird to say, but in part I do like it here because I use it less. Among the things I wanted out of social media, I would not have pegged "inactivity" as an apparent plus and there's no getting around doing something else.

Does make me feel a little guilty, since I'm in essence lurking and then only every couple days when I still want this to succeed and could be offloading literally anything to make that happen. I'm just..distracted at the moment. With not social media.

"It wasn't about slavery!"

Texas' articles of secession name slavery as a main cause twelve times. Georgia's calls abolitionism "heresy" and Mississippi, bless them, referred to it with "a blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization," before going even further with such quotes as

[The US government] refuses the admission of new slave States into the Union, and seeks to extinguish it by confining it within its present limits, denying the power of expansion.

It tramples the original equality of the South under foot.

Which I am only leaving here because somebody wrote that, meant it, and sent it off, and it is insane to read.

Fortunately for Mississippi, their constituents can't.

I know you're trolling and indeed fuck the rest, but..buddhist monks? Pretty hard to have beef with. No pun intended.

I guess you could make the case that encouraging indifference towards suffering breeds a whole different class of sociopathy, but even then, at least they're the least destructive they can possibly be by just never touching anything.

Nepenthe ,

Well. "Extremist" and "nationalist" were never words I thought I would see attached to the phrase buddhist monk, but here we are, I fucking guess. That's a thing that I know now.

A spokesperson for Marina Port Vell said that the boat had not been damaged in Friday’s action. “After a quick action on behalf of the security team, the incident has been corrected and the boat is now in a perfect state,” the spokesperson told CNN.

Cannot stress enough that a new paint job is not the kind of action that's going to fix jack shit. More than likely, it's barely an annoyance. Few people on the planet have not heard the message already. If you don't want them joyriding a massive yacht everywhere, remove the yacht.

Uh. Lemme check. Yes. We're well past the "please stop killing me, it's really mean :(" stage. They know. They are choosing to jetset anyway.

If the disgustingly rich haven't shifted their focus by now, they've basically made their stance known already and stuff like this strikes me as just toying around. It makes activists feel like they accomplished something, and then it's rectified quite literally the same day and everyone continues about their business.

Depends on where you end up, too. There are a bare handful of prisons full of and geared towards rehabbing sex offenders, though none of those are where he's going. And low security in general, sure, they're apt to mostly ostracize them rather than risk extending their own sentence. High security, you're gonna want to go into protective custody as quickly as possible or gamble on whether or not your skull is ventilated.

Protective custody was where Masterson was being held back in June anyway while awaiting a verdict. I see no real reason he'd be moved out of it, so I'm sure he'll mostly be bored.

The saddest part of this was that I'm so used to the creationists' approach to covid that before finishing the headline, I genuinely assumed it was a woman trying to rid themselves of every ounce of their own DNA in a bid to outfox the government.

That's where we are right now. Were I correct, I would not have been fazed. I always loathed that movie with everything in me, but I think it's because I saw it as meaning to entertain rather than to warn.

@Nepenthe@kbin.social avatar

I know, I've really been meaning to and then I forget, and then I remember, and then I forget again. I've never heard it mentioned except in glowing terms. Not really the nihilism, though.

Knowing just barely enough about it in the first place to even have a vested interest, I think maybe I'm too prone to being sad tonight and I'm just gonna shelve it atm and go back to my personal bg3 hell. One should at least have stuffed shells or something, if they're going to feel more apathetic about humanity than I already do.

Prepared for what during a nuclear war. There is nobody they could fire on that's less militarily prepared than they are themselves. I'd be shocked if anyone actually remembers to think about them except when they saber rattle. And even then, it's not in a worried way like they want. I find myself cheering on every threat like a doting uncle at the special olympics.

I'd originally intended to make the joke that North Korea is like if Canada had a goatee, but Canada has allies.

Nepenthe ,
@Nepenthe@kbin.social avatar

Never understood the dumbass pspsps thing. It's annoying and I've pretty much never seen it work. What always has worked for me is to chill just a little ways away and completely ignore them. Just as non-threatening as you can make yourself if you were a piece of furniture left out on the sidewalk.

From personal experience, cats hate being made to do things and don't come when called unless they already know you and like you a lot. But they also loathe being ignored and will snoof right over shortly to the one person being completely indifferent to them.

This would be the same reason they seem to mercilessly hunt anyone with a cat allergy. Your perceived dislike of them shall not stand!

On the other hand, among women with five years or longer of follow-up, those with a high carbohydrate intake of more than 65% had a higher risk of all-cause mortality. No clear association was observed between refined or minimally processed carbohydrate intake and the risk of mortality in women.

For fats, men with a high fat intake of more than 35% of their total energy from fats had a higher risk of cancer-related mortality. They also found that a low intake of unsaturated fat in men was associated with a higher risk of all-cause and cancer-related mortality.

In contrast, total fat intake and saturated fat intake in women showed an inverse association with the risk of all-cause and cancer-related mortality. They concluded that this finding does not support the idea that high fat intake is detrimental to longevity in women.

So, hesitantly, keto is terrible for men but fine enough for women? Like we weren't already outliving them in general. I'd just be dying to know why, though. You don't just casually tell me dietary requirements noticeably differ by sex and then never elaborate

That was one of the things I miss most about Boost. The ability to tag users was so nice both as a way to keep track of and remember nice facts about users I routinely interacted with in private subs, and to stop myself from bothering to argue with someone I've previously titled "depressing incel" or "autism vaccines."

Climate activists have spraypainted a superyacht, blocked private jets from taking off and plugged holes in golf courses this summer as part of an intensifying campaign against the emissions-spewing lifestyles of the ultrawealthy.

That really had me interested for a minute. Usually, when things are "targeted," it's with a few more explosives? Instead, I can't really recall the last time I was this let down.

Not even bothering with hyperbole, dear FBI agent. These are the people that helped and continue to help knowingly trigger an ongoing mass extinction event. You don't fight the good fight with people who don't have to care by temporarily plugging a golf hole.

Without question. The ability to have sex with something isn't going to prevent them from being socially dysfunctional and would, if anything, make it noticeably worse. You're getting off, but you still have issues talking to the other sex. They're just easier to avoid addressing now and your dolls don't demand basic respect.

I don't think I'd come out too much against it, personally. People got biological imperatives, I'm not gonna protest against dildos. But the financial and mental health crises both remain and can't be circumvented like that.

@Nepenthe@kbin.social avatar

Impacting the plebeian workforce in a way that's felt even harder than today's inability to afford kids? Yeah, this is gonna be mocked and regulated out of existence for sure.

It'll look like moral reasoning, but the fewer workers exist, the more bargaining power all of them have against the rich. See the scarcity of laborers during the black plague triggering the end of feudalism.

Nepenthe ,
@Nepenthe@kbin.social avatar

Oh, that's what that was about? I honestly just assumed Starry was some crap knock-off that the restaurant just happened to have that day. Not really sure what the motive would be or why they'd expect the reaction to rebranding a nearly 20yr old product would be any other assumption. I'm going to disagree with them. They should be glad I'm not calling them Sprite.

Even if they weren't wrongly convicted. Murderer happens to follow any one of the religions that forbid pork? What's feeding them bacon going to accomplish, exactly? It's purely out of spite when the object is supposed to be to discourage reoffending. Treating people humanely makes them act human. Call them a dog and they'll act like a dog.

Even the more progressive can be like this. People have weird ideas about human worth being something measurable and thus rescindable.

Nepenthe ,
@Nepenthe@kbin.social avatar

Exactly. I've only ever pirated things I couldn't afford, and even then I kept a running list of the good ones in the hopes that one day I could pay them legitimately. When I can afford to buy them fairly, I don't pirate.

Well, toys less than actual computerized doppelganger. But all the same. Who's gonna call out The Mouse?

One remaining spark of light in this, I don't think an AI or indeed most writers could mimic anything like the frantic ad-libbing he was known and loved for. But I do think he was loved enough that 98% of the populace would see that movie just to see "him" in something again.

Nepenthe ,
@Nepenthe@kbin.social avatar

I personally would love to do almost all of those things. I wouldn't want to do them as a job. There is an ocean of difference between doing something because it's enjoyable and doing it because if I ever stop for any reason, I will starve to death in a ditch. Tends to kill the fun.

My ideal job would be chilling out as a professional student, splitting my time between large amounts of socializing and various crafting hobbies that are not stressful because my ability to live does not depend on them. Might even take up an instrument. Wouldn't play it for anyone, I just like learning things more than I like anything else. Which is not monetizable.

Barring that, whatever allows me the most time to do so without making me miserable. Beyond the basic amount required to survive, life isn't about money. Life is life.

While not especially tech-inclined, I think I'm up for handling confusing these days and I got people I could bother if I run into jargon truly impenetrable. I really appreciate all the links as well as the recommendation, thank you :)

Edit: I also vastly appreciate the time they've taken to make a jargon and non-jargon version of the FAQ. That has to be a labor of love and most things along these lines can feel daunting and inaccessible past a certain point simply because other tech bros understand it perfectly without the need for crayons
