Why, though? Greedy breeders already “produce” more dogs than there are loving families for and as a result dog shelters are constantly full with sad dogs who don´t have a home. This drug will result in shelters getting even more overcrowded. Death is a natural part of life, just as birth, I wish more people would get that.

Nacktmull ,
@Nacktmull@lemmy.world avatar

What actually shortens the life expectancy of dogs is the kind of selective breeding for unreasonable external characteristics that has long been carried out by greedy and/or ignorant dog breeders.

Nacktmull ,
@Nacktmull@lemmy.world avatar

But why would we want that? In my opinion that would be a mistake. The planet is already severely overpopulated and as I said, death is a natural part of life, just like birth.

@Nacktmull@lemmy.world avatar

I’m pretty cynical, but this is a new level.

Accepting death as a part of life is in no way cynical, it´s logical.

My dog lives longer and shelters get more crowded?

Don´t think only of yourself, try to see the bigger picture. Not just your dog will live longer, a lot of dogs will with that drug, resulting in less adoptions. Since commercial breeders are not going to “produce” less dogs just because of the new drug, the result of dogs living longer will be a higher population of dogs. Now considering the number of people who want to adopt a dog will decrease while the number of dogs available will increase, this will necessarily result in more dogs who don´t find/have a home. It´s really quite obvious if you think about it.

the article seems to indicate that the pill will give a dog more “active years” and not necessarily more years

The article indicates both as far as I comprehend it:

“Biotech company Loyal is developing an injectable drug, LOY-001, designed to help large breed dogs not only live longer, but stay healthy longer”

Nacktmull ,
@Nacktmull@lemmy.world avatar

That is not what I meant to say. I argued against artificially increasing life expectancy, which does not equal arguing for decreasing natural life expectancy.

Nacktmull ,
@Nacktmull@lemmy.world avatar

That is of course very sweet of you and I understand it on a personal level. You love your dog and would do anything for him and so you even wish he could live infinitely if that was possible. However, maybe you could also try to understand my reasoning as well? I was talking about human/canine society as a whole and if all humans and/or dogs would get to live, let´s say, twice as long or even become immortal, that would lead to severe problems regarding overpopulation, don´t you agree?

I envy your optimism.

Is there any love for BAR (Beyond All Reason-FOSS RTS) on Lemmy?

I just finally got into this game and I’m completely shell shocked! I had seen it recommended before but ventured into other games without giving it a fair shake. As an avid RTS fan since Dune: The battle for Arrakis on Sega genesis, I’ve been slowly feeling more and more lackluster in the genres future prospects. I was a...

I suspect a steep learning curve

You will find one but it´s all manageable. I recommend focusing on one faction and one or two unit types at the beginning and learn just those tech trees first, to avoid getting overwhelmed by the abundance of units and go from there. Vehicles and/or Bots are good unit types to start with. Just let your team know what unit types you will go for at the start of a match, choose a fitting starting position and it should work fine.

@Nacktmull@lemmy.world avatar

Don´t get me wrong, it’s humans in the first place who make dogs dangerous and hating any breed is stupid. People who do that have a one sided view. However, let’s be real, you have a one sided view too, just a positive one. The bad name of certain breeds has reasons, like the fact that they have been bred to fight and to max out biting power and to have an instinct to not let go when biting. I know Pitbulls are not the breed with the highest bite force but they are still in the top 10.

Today’s pit bull is a descendant of the original English bull-baiting dog—a dog that was bred to bite and hold bulls, bears and other large animals around the face and head.

Some pit bulls were selected and bred for their fighting ability.

Source: www.aspca.org/…/position-statement-pit-bulls

No matter how sweet your individual Pitbull might be after a loving upbringing, many years of breeding with such goals definitely still affect the gene pool and like it or not, instinctive behavior, especially in stressful situations. Then there is the problem of bad people who get dogs as weapons and abuse them, turning them aggressive.

Nacktmull ,
@Nacktmull@lemmy.world avatar

Wiping out? Why not just forbid malicious breeding goals, like aggression, bite force and of course torture / unhealthy breeding?

Nacktmull , (edited )
@Nacktmull@lemmy.world avatar

Nice that we agree that it´s generally always the owners fault if something goes wrong but it´s also a fact that different dog breeds have different aggression potentials and thereby are more or less difficult to train and control. So choosing a dog breed that is not more aggressive than necessary is also part of the owners responsibility. I for myself would never choose a breed that has been bred to fight, bite and not let go, as a family dog. Instead I would choose a Bernese for example, because they have been bred into the opposite direction, to protect and not to fight, to bark and not to bite, which results in a very calm and gentle general behaviour.

Nacktmull ,
@Nacktmull@lemmy.world avatar

Therefore all the hate for one specific breed is idiotic, unfair and should be directed towards people not innocent creatures that we basically created.

That is exactly what I wrote earlier, nice that we agree in this point.

If you’re a shitty trainer you should get a golden retriever instead of a Pit.

Hard disagree here, shitty trainers should not get any dog imo.

I was trying to add a more a more differentiated perspective.

True but I would still prefer to be attacked by a lapdog instead of a medium sized dog, just not while it´s sitting in my lap ;)

Look Epic, those are very nice presents but as I told you many times already, I am happily married to Steam and I plan to keep it that way. Please respect my decision and stop sending me gifts, it´s getting awkward and honestly you´re making an ass of yourself.

I simply did not get that I actually had to turn it. Then it’s super obvious.

Nacktmull ,
@Nacktmull@lemmy.world avatar

Theoretically, “settlers” can describe behaviours ranging from strictly non violent all the way to military expansionists, I assume.

Nacktmull ,
@Nacktmull@lemmy.world avatar

You seem to assume that everyone is always making exclusively conscious decisions about everything. I think you severely overestimate the ability of people to make conscious decisions. Are you not aware that companies have been systematically lying to consumers for decades? That they are using psychology based advertising, to manipulate consumers into buying things that are bad for them? I certainly don´t believe everyone is that smart and conscious about what they are doing all the time.

Every injured person deserves treatment, no exceptions, anything else would be inhumane.

Nacktmull ,
@Nacktmull@lemmy.world avatar

IDF does the same though

Nacktmull ,
@Nacktmull@lemmy.world avatar

What do you mean by admit? You mean to treat? Yes of course. As I said, imo every sick or injured person deserves medical treatment, no matter their background. Also, when they are healthy again, I would want to see that Nazi getting put in front of a court, questioned, convicted and punished as the law dictates.

Nacktmull ,
@Nacktmull@lemmy.world avatar

You are entitled to have that opinion, have a nice day.

Nacktmull ,
@Nacktmull@lemmy.world avatar

Yes of course I would, how else could they convict him for his crimes?

Nacktmull ,
@Nacktmull@lemmy.world avatar

I understand that but for injured people they should make an exception, it would be the humanist thing to do.

Nacktmull ,
@Nacktmull@lemmy.world avatar

Sorry, I have enough of being attacked from both sides constantly, just for being neutral and humanist in this conflict. I get attacked by the pro Israel crowd and simultaneously, in other discussions, I get attacked by the pro Palestine crowd (those people are outstandingly hateful and disgusting). Both sides are so polarized over the topic, I decided to not discuss it any more with neither side. This is in the first place a reaction to the disgusting and hateful people on lemmy.ml, who are unable to accept any opinion from outside of their antisemitic, pseudo-left bubble and definitely not because of you guys but it´s all getting too cumbersome for me overall, so I will dropout of the topic in general.

Nacktmull ,
@Nacktmull@lemmy.world avatar

I’m sorry I made you feel attacked.

Never mind, it wasn’t you. I was just getting tired of arguing with 20+ people from both sides simultaneously. Seems like whenever I say something neutral and humanist, at least one of both camps is gonna attack me, which one depends on the instance.

It’s just that’s it unreasonable for a society who directly suffered from a horrible actor to forget that so soon. It was 2013 when they were in power last and 10 years is a blink of an eye in the timeline of a society. In 30-40 years I think the pain of the Brotherhood’s actions may have healed enough that they would risk allowing the brotherhood in to aid in civilian casualties.

I totally understand that grudge, It’s only human. However, I wish people were better at letting go of grudges. The whole Israel-Palestine situation would be less severe if people could.

You’re not wrong for seeing the suffering in Gaza and wanting it to stop. You’re not wrong for seeing the atrocities of Hamas and calling them out.

That is the first time someone says that to me here and I really needed to hear it!

I hope you have a great day.

Thank you for your nice reply and a great day to you too!
