There’s a weird dynamic where toxic shit partially maintains it’s popularity because content that focuses on debunking it gets eaten up. The world building was solid enough to distract me from the writing for a long time. This probably sounds like a nitpick but here goes.

The part where the scientists are explaining GAIA (whatever its called) was so badly done I lost all suspension of disbelief. Like why did these people spend, presumably hours of their precious time, creating an Apple style keynote speech explaining their plan to save the world. Like maybe just focus on saving the world? And one of them has a valley accent. No disrespect to valley accents but if you’re trying to convince me I’m listening to one of the smartest people in the world it’s definitely a bad choice to give them an accent attributed to ignorant white girls.

Interesting. My local transit has ads listing a number to text for help. As far as I know the number goes straight to the transit police force and not the cops and I always thought it was a good thing to reassure people (especially women traveling at night) that they can text the number if they feel unsafe and someone will be there to help them.

I think people are questioning the ethics of Batman more these days given how discussions around poverty and crime has changed. Given how crime is more often than not a result of poverty and a lack of social safety net than greed or lack of morals, the ethics of Batman bypassing the justice system^1^ and beating the shit out of henchman comes into question.

As others said, not Paul. It’s weird as fuck, completely surreal. But it’s the most amazing book I’ve ever read. The transformation is considered weird as fuck by the characters in the book too, but it allows Frank to explore some truly unique and interesting ideas.

I don’t think I will ever again have a literary experience as satisfying as reading that book.

In Canada (afaik) cops rarely kill anyone who is not wielding a gun, this includes people out of their minds on drugs wielding knives. They are usually able to disarm and subdue the suspect by non-lethal means.

The idea that a 15 year old kid running at a cop should be shot on sight is absolutely absurd and only normalized in the US, please reconsider your perspective.

All that said cops still fucking suck in Canada and have a history of being racists and abusive.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I’m pretty sure the BB-8 you see on film is mostly CGI. A working BB-8 prop does exist but it’s more of a reference that gets covered in CGI. It’s a common film technique that gets used these days and often those articles praising “no CGI” are often PR bullshit that stretches the truth because “practical effects” has become a buzzword.

I can prove a few shots of BB8 are CGI.

I obviously can’t prove it but I would assume every BB8 shot is either entirely CGI or uses the practical robot as a reference pass. Relying on a practical robot would introduce a point of failure that could delay shots and force more takes, adding cost and time to the production. The only reason the filmmakers have to use a practical effect is to give the actors a reference, all other shots it’s faster and cheaper to use CGI.

TL;DR: BB8 is mostly if not entirely CG and film companies are almost always lying when emphasizing the practical effects used in their film.

The vision costs a shit load of money because they’ve put an abundance technology and R&D into the product to make it capable of things no other VR/AR headset is capable of. By all accounts the screen resolution, response rate, 3D tracking, and gesture recognition create an experience that other headsets can attempt to mimic but will fall short of. Watch MKBHD’s videos on it, it’s genuinely a really impressive piece of technology.

And yes, they charge more because they are Apple and they know their hoards of loyal followers will buy anything they make.
