"But Munro is an entirely different case, and she may be a singular author in that category for me: the time spent not reading her is as essential to my understanding of her work as the time spent immersed in her words."

It's my birthday in a few days.

The greatest gift I can imagine is if you give yourself the gift of a book. For the 3rd year running, I offer my suggestions for how to go about that: http://bookgagabooks.ca/2022/02/28/the-gift-of-a-book-is-a-gift-for-many/

  • Purchase from independent booksellers and it's also a gift to those hardworking people and businesses.

  • Pre-order books as "a present to your future self" ... and a gift to tireless and determined authors and publishers.

Please reply and let me know what you got, OK? @bookstodon

@bookgaga @bookstodon it just so happens your post came on the same day the latest in my new favorite series was released! However, We have so many still to read book in our house, we put a moratorium on buying new book in 2024. Well…March is a pretty good stretch before breaking the rule! Guess what makes a good book?

Good writing & a story you’re interested in. A novel idea, I know, but in this day & age we are all but told who & what we should be reading. Don’t listen, read what & who you enjoy.

Below are a stack of books by Richard Russo, who I think is an incredible writer. You may totally disagree & that’s 100% alright with me.

@Likewise @bookstodon Yes! Read what gives you joy, or escape, or knowledge, or laughter, or whatever you need at the moment! I agree any book that gives to you is a good book.

Cozy mysteries?

I’ve read & enjoyed Still Life by Louise Penny, does that count? I recently found this book, The Thursday Murder Club & it was called a ‘cozy mystery.’ Do you all have any recommendations, do you like this genre or am I’m just 100 years old?

@Likewise @bookstodon I love these so much, I’ll share again. https://mas.to/@MardraS/111596499705622854
witty wordplay, endearing characters, and a sense of fun with the mystery: The Anty Boisjoly Mystery series is SO delightful; I read the seven books this year, most twice! It’s the kind of book you have to read bits out loud to whomever else is in the room. Or, if you’re feeling shy, just laugh outloud (to yourself).

What’s a book you’d like to read next year, either a newly published book in 2024 or a book that you didn’t get to this year?

I’ll start:

The Year of the Locust by Terry Hayes (2024 pub. date) & A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens (not new 😉).

If someone, who isn’t an avid reader says, “This is one of the best books I’ve ever read…” (assuming they aren’t talking about something they read when they were 5)

Do you think:

Wow, this must be a phenomenal book, I must find it immediately.

OR

This is probably trash or close to it & if I see it, steer clear. @bookstodon

@Likewise @bookstodon I’m always intrigued by the books that “make the list“ for those who learn and absorb the world without many books.

MardraS ,
@MardraS@mas.to avatar

@Likewise @bookstodon Mostly good because it has to really speak to them to keep them. I love to read as an escape, and there are so many books I don’t remember. Whereas is someone doesn’t choose to read, those one or two books must really have been impactful.

A short thread about books, me, and a micro-book review. To start with, in a world of “a-holics.” I am, among other addictions, a page-a-holic. Therefore, I read (predominantly) short books. Once I start, it’s difficult (as in, makes me incredibly agitated and impossible to live with) for me to put a book down until it is done. This is not a nerdy sort of bragging, it’s more a confession, of sorts, as to why today, instead of doing the things, I read a book. 1/
