Didn’t it also include “DO NOT ASK WHY”?

Several (if not all) of the astronauts who died in the Challenger explosion probably didn’t die immediately. They likely remained conscious and aware for at least several seconds, and died on impact with the ocean surface.

Some people who like to post memes also like to post them in multiple communities, and crossposting can be much more obvious here than on reddit

How Many Star Trek Episodes Pass the Bechdel Test? (TOS to ENT) | The Mary Sue (www.themarysue.com)

I found this after reading and responding to this post here about early Trek fans’ prejudicial negative reaction to TNG. One of my responses (see here) was to point out that any fans of the progressiveness of Trek ought to have been mindful of the room for improvement over TOS, with female representation being an obvious...

Conservatives have taught people that it’s not just okay, but patriotic to be a loud, obnoxious, hateful bigot. Meanwhile, way too many liberals tolerate their behavior instead of calling it out. As I see it, both sides contribute to the problem. Obviously, the aggressors are worse, but standing by silently just encourages them.

HappyMeatbag ,
@HappyMeatbag@beehaw.org avatar

Although it would be nice to change their mind, that isn’t the only reason. They need to know that their behavior isn’t acceptable. Even if they still feel the same way, maybe next time they’ll keep their hatred to themselves and seethe quietly instead of harassing people. That’s not ideal, but it’s better than implicitly giving them approval.

Sunglasses. Sometimes the sun will be at just the right angle to blind you, and the sun shade won’t help.

Advil or Tylenol or something like that. Especially handy if you forget the sunglasses.

Pesto Bismol, some antacid tablets, etc. It’s possible that one of those those new restaurants or gas station snacks won’t agree with you.

Toilet paper. Just because someplace has a toilet doesn’t mean it’s well equipped. Also useful if there’s NO toilet, but it’s an emergency.

Games don’t need better, more complex graphics. They need adequate time and resources during the development process. They need to actually be completed by their release date, not just barely playable. They need to be held to a higher standard of quality when publishers judge if they’re ready to sell.

And yet, the bar is SO low that I’m impressed the comic isn’t quite as condescendingly preachy and obnoxious as it could be.

(Okay, maybe the editor refused to print the version the cartoonist really wanted to run, but still.)

Bluesky started out being owned by Twitter (pre Musk), but became a completely separate company (also pre Musk). Somewhat like Mastadon, it is intended to be decentralized. It’s still in beta, so it’s not freely open to the public yet - you have to get an invitation from someone who already uses it.

How do they plan to make money? “We’ll be publishing a blog post on our monetization plans in a few weeks, and we’ll share more then” according to Emily Liu, part of the Bluesky team.

I think people like Android devices because you can put a completely different, non-google OS on them.

Some Android fans don’t quite get that, and some aren’t specific with their language, so it reads like they’re talking about how secure the Android OS is. That’s my guess, anyway.

I guess I’m kinda naive. “You gonna dance on that table, or just stand on it?” doesn’t sound like a sex joke to me, but that’s what people are calling it.

    HappyMeatbag ,
    @HappyMeatbag@beehaw.org avatar

I agree. I was caught off guard because it didn’t show up on my radar at all. It’s not like I thought “eh, it’s only a little bit racy”. I just missed the sex implications completely.

For me, it all depends on tone of voice, and what word is emphasized. “Pretty good!” generally means better than expected. “Pretty good” is like “Good, but…”

Ever have a customer-facing job? Ever have some obnoxious jackass say “I’m never coming back again!” Do these people think they’re hurting me? Do they think others are impressed by their tantrum?

    I’m getting similar vibes here.

Does Putin think he’s harming these people by throwing them out of his miserable authoritarian country? Does he think he looks like a strong, admirable leader?

Yes, it can. I’d rather have what you call “censorship” than put up with hate speech and bigotry - and the scumbags those things attract.

YOU”RE NOT GOING TO ACT OUTRAGED OVER SMALL THINGS

“Outrage by default” is an extremely bad trait that I hope reddit refugees (like myself) don’t make common. It’s exhausting, unhealthy, and rarely helpful.

Someone in another thread made a simple but profound point: not every conversation needs to become a debate.

Maybe, under specific conditions, and only if certain requirements are met.

Firstly, I’m only (reluctantly) in favor of conscription for defensive wars. Never mind the propaganda - if a conscript is ever stationed outside their nation’s borders, that’s not “defense” (by conscription standards, anyway). None of that “preemptive strike” bullshit. They also must be adequately trained. Throwing people into the meat grinder is not okay.

Secondly, conscripts get free, high-quality healthcare for life (I know, some of you already do, but I’m American). No exceptions or exclusions of any kind, and no red tape. Individuals must be well compensated for any injuries, and family must be well compensated in case of death.

Thirdly, conscripts must be well paid, and guaranteed a return to their peacetime job regardless of company size, length of absence, etc.

I’m sure there are many points I haven’t addressed, so feel free to add them!

Moon rocket blasts off, carrying Russia’s hope of first successful lunar landing since 1976 (www.theguardian.com)

The Luna-25 mission will seek to land near the south pole of the moon, collecting geological samples from the area, and sending back data for signs of water or its building blocks, which could raise the possibility of a future human colony on the moon.

The vast majority of the time, I’m in favor of science. Under Russia’s current conditions, though, it’s just stupid. It’s nothing but an ego boost for Putin.

You know, that occurred to me hours after posting. Most of the money had already been spent before the war even started. It would be even dumber to just let it sit in a hangar and fall apart, like that knockoff space shuttle that they made.

A new book reveals that numerous atrocities that the United States had alleged to have been committed by its foes never happened to begin with.

    Reveals? Seriously?

The hoax built around Tiananmen Square was a blueprint for US media campaigns aimed at showing the Chinese government in a bad light, as Washington went on to accuse Beijing of perpetrating a genocide against the Uyghur people in Xinjiang province.

    Oh, please.

Keep your tankie apologist shit to yourself. Thanks.

The “teenagers pining for anarchy” bit had me laughing. Teenagers may say they want anarchy, but they don’t want REAL anarchy. They’re just tired of adults telling them what to do. Teenagers aren’t stupid, either. They should know the difference, and I bet a lot of them do.

Considering how awful people can be, I don’t want real anarchy, either, but at least I’m not some edgelord who pretends he does. Squabblr doesn’t sound like a community I could stomach for long. Noping out probably saved your sanity.
