@bookstodon I started a light and fluffy read (think India Holton’s Wisteria Society level of fluff) and it opens with the FMC being tackled to the ground in a dark room and bodily held down by a strange man, and her reaction is all ooh muscles and sexy feelings (by which you know you’ve met the MMC) and I just could not get past that reaction. Sure, she’s competent and trained as a spy, so her reaction doesn’t HAVE to be fear, but it sure as hell shouldn’t be that.

It’s also immediately followed by the MMC being surprised he’s captured a woman and I’m like, excuse you this is set in the Victorian era, you would’ve had to get past her skirts to tackle her, you have to know you’re on top of a woman just from the volume of clothing under you, you TWAT.

So, anyway. I’m plainly not in the mood for this style of light and fluffy 😂

Sounds ghastly.

Got it and read maybe a third of it so far. Maybe I should have waited for August to begin.

Finished it, and still not entirely sure what I think. (I liked the characters. That's not as weird as it sounds, I frequently dislike characters in stories.) But the story itself left me unsatisfied. There are too many things that don't really make a lot of sense, and not enough explanation of why things are the way they are. Like why exactly are all these supernatural beings even interested in taking over?

Oh, I didn't realize it was part of a series. That makes the lack of explanation more understandable.

I’ll be reading Olivia Waite’s The Hellion’s Waltz in March if any followers would like to join me. Post commentary as you go along or a review at the end 😊

does anybody know a polite and societally acceptable way to phrase

"dear colleagues,
i would love to spend my lunch break with you, but if i do so my brain has to spend 30-50 minutes being a) completely overwhelmed by the amount of social context and b) severely depressed about its inability to participate in any form of group conversation.
if i am lucky this means a whole workday without a proper break, when unlucky this gets me an extra little mini meltdown in the afternoon which then renders me unable to work for several hours / the rest of the day.
love, pinkie"

You don't owe anyone an explanation. Just say, "I prefer to have some time to myself."

What are your thoughts on DNF (Did Not Finish)-ing books? Do you feel guilty about it? Do you worry you missed out on something? Or are you confident in dropping a book and reaching for the next one?

At what point are you most likely to DNF, if ever? What sorts of things cause you to DNF?

My friend, book blogger Kriti, was musing on these questions a while back, and it sparked this new post: https://armedwithabook.com/dealing-with-dnf-the-practice-of-did-not-finish/

Why would I feel guilty about not reading a book if I find I'm not enjoying it? Unless it's required reading for a class or something, a book is purely for personal pleasure. If it's not pleasurable, well, I have better things to do with my time.

When talking to autistic people, especially in the workplace or at school, be absolutely clear and unambiguous about instructions.

Especially don't leave anything unsaid, or to be assumed. If you do that there's a good chance it won't be done, because you didn't ask us to.

I feel like this is just basic for talking to any people.

According to the latest review for A Bit of Murder Between Friends, pink-haired crusty punk lesbian grannies are an overused cliché now. And the existence of trans people is 'too preachy'.

Shrug.

Anyways, if you might want to read a book about a clichéd character and her too-preachy friend, check out A Bit of Murder Between Friends by Elliott Hay (aka me).
