Since we are coming up on June, it seems like a good time to check in with everyone here on @bookstodon regarding favorite reads of 2024 so far. Whatcha got?

My top five reads of 2024 so far:

The Criminal series of graphic novels by Ed Brubaker (ten primary works)

James, Percival Everett

The Book of Love, Kelly Link

Poor Deer, Claire Oshetsky

Prequel, Rachel Maddow

Unfortunately I haven't read enough this year yet to form a top 5. This is what I've read so far, all for my book club:
"The Chosen and the Beautiful" by Nghi Vo - retelling of The Great Gatsby from Jordan Baker's perspective, with magic and queer people. I liked it but I was the only one in my book club who did.

"The Night Watchman" by Louise Erdrich - Stories of people from the Turtle Mountain band of Chippewa in the 50s. A bit magical realist.

10 authors, of whose books I've read at least five:

Terry Pratchett
Brandon Sanderson
Neil Gaiman
Piers Anthony
Brian K. Vaughan
Warren Ellis
Garth Ennis
Kieron Gillen
Bryan Lee O'Malley
Matt Fraction

Gosh that was harder than I thought it would be. I felt like using might be cheating but I guess I don't read a ton of longer series otherwise.

There's a bundle for sale at https://www.humblebundle.com/books/terry-pratchetts-discworld-harpercollins-books
$18 minimum for 38 books

I think this would be a great buy for someone looking to get into Discworld, with a few caveats:

  • They are Kobo DRM'd eBooks so you can't read them on a non-Kobo eReader without stripping off the DRM
  • It's not a complete set (but it's close, I think they are only missing 3 of the main novels)
