Question for the horror fanatics: is summer always such a big time for horror movies?

Going back to June, we've had The Watchers, A Quiet Place: Day One, MaXXXine, and Longlegs. And coming soon is Trap, Cuckoo, and the new Alien movie. Many of those were good, and all are high profile. To say nothing of the May releases, or smaller, limited/streaming releases.

Is this normal?

@auzzy @horror Writers strike leading to less blockbusters this summer has opened the door for smaller films to get more coverage I think.

@auzzy @horror I do also think there are just more getting made as mid budget horror has proven one of the more reliable money makers of recent years.

@SaltiredPopcorn @horror I saw this at a secret where nobody knew what the film would be, only that it was a horror. Someone walked out every ten minutes. Can't say I blame them, it was boring as hell. Still, did have that one awesome kill.

Dire @horror for today. But not the worst I have watched this year, strangely enough.

@SaltiredPopcorn @horror You liked this more than The First Omen? Tarot?

DanChilton ,
@DanChilton@mastodon.scot avatar

@SaltiredPopcorn @horror I seem to have liked First Omen more than most people. It was a bit ponderous and fundamentally pointless (as are all prequels) but I thought the lead actress was great and there were some quality shots. Tarot weirded me out by being in the cinema, feels like something you come across 5 minutes into an Amazon Prime scroll.

@SaltiredPopcorn @horror I didn't expect to like First Omen at all because I'd enjoyed Immaculate so much but it surprised me ( lthough not as good as Immaculate). Felt like a genuine love letter to the 70s classics rather than a cynical cash grab.

@SaltiredPopcorn @horror I agree with 8/10 for this. Decent film elevated by an absolute banger of a final act.

Just watching 🎥🍿

It's a solid, relatively smart .
It's definitely a w lots of gore. Roth's stuff always seems +5 pts too mean spirited for me. Maybe it's that his gore is so realistic, or that I don't find his movies joyfully deranged so much as misanthropic.

While I appreciate that it got made, & ALSO how many things from the OG trailer got incorporated in some way, I still feel like the 2007 faux trailer is the superior movie, lol.

@stina_marie @horror I liked this, nice to able to see a slasher made with a budget and put on the big screen rather than buried in the depths of Amazon Prime. Went a bit too hard on the "who dunnit" though, I think it would have been better with a faceless Micheal Myers type killer.

@SaltiredPopcorn @horror A weird tradition has emerged where the first film I see in the cinema every year turns out to be crap. This was no exception.

Just found out there's a Horrordle (Horror Wordle) going on every day for the month of October!!

I can't figure out how to paste it without it remembering my first play... Hopefully it erases for you once it realizes you're on a different device but it's super fun & here you go:

@stina_marie @horror Thanks for the tip off. Wish it let you go back and do the earlier ones.

Your eighteenth recommendation for this month is the bonkers and darkly hilarious, but also disturbing, Mom And Dad. Nicolas Cage and Selma Blair head up a film that shows how horrible things get when parents suddenly start senselessly attacking/killing off their children.

@SaltiredPopcorn @horror I loved this, totally took me by surprise when I saw it.
