In all honesty I’m shocked. Jirard is one of the few YouTubers I have (well, had) a tonne of respect for.

Part of me wants to hope there’s a rational explanation for why he and his foundation sat on viewer donations for a whole decade whilst knowingly misleading donors that their funds were going to a charitable cause, but I really think this is going to end his career. Just wait until every other YouTuber picks this story up, or when it goes viral on Reddit…

Clbull OP ,

At the same time, Mutahar and Karl are very well respected content creators who do their research. They wouldn’t drop a bombshell like this if they didn’t have good sources.

I too will wait to see how Jirard responds.

Clbull OP ,

I think some explanations are worse than others.

Either the OHF have been incompetent with filing their annual returns, have been incompetent with actually ensuring the money goes to the right people, or there’s some embezzlement going on.

Clbull OP ,

Are we talking about RWhiteGoose here?

I mean… Goose is still prominent in the Goldeneye speedrunning community, and was only banned from The Elite for about a year before he was welcomed back. Jobst made his name speedrunning the same game, even managing to get some uncontested world records.

Back in my first year of university, we went on a three day trip to London. The trip itself was a yearly tradition for the History department and everyone in the freshman year went.

An urban legend had been spreading of a student who got so drunk on absinthe that he was caught in the bathroom at 4AM writing messages in his own shit on the walls and mirror. My university almost got barred from that particular hostel.

Several years after graduation, I meet somebody who studied at the same university and did the exact same degree as me, but five years prior. It happened during his year and he slept in the bunk next to the guy who did it.

Honestly, the only silver lining of Ron DeSantis’s feud with Disney over anti-gay legislation is that the Republicans might end up undoing all the copyright extensions Disney lobbied for over the past few decades.

Disney is largely to blame for America’s copyright laws being so fucked.

Clbull ,

From the POV of a Reddit veteran who had migrated from Digg prior to the v4 update that killed the site, it’s absolutely shocking how much better the Lemmy (or at least Lemmy World) community is.

I also feel like I have a lot more freedom to speak my mind on Lemmy.

My problem with Reddit is that I have had to self-censor my comments to avoid getting them automatically purged by bots. It’s like I cannot even use words/phrases like ‘snowflake’, ‘cuck’, ‘incel’, ‘Trump’, ‘soy’, and many others in a comment, because some fragile power mod decided to effectively shadowban those words. Context doesn’t even matter.

Reddit mods are the kind of people who look up to the dystopian ideals George Orwell presented in 1984 and think that banning an entire lexicon of words is a great idea to control people.

As for why I think Lemmy is better, my hypothesis is that everyone with a moral compass left Reddit out of disgust, and what remains is a sea of toxic assholes.

Clbull ,

Your average Redditor is a toxic dick though who will dig up past comments and dox you just because they don’t like your opinion.

Governments plan more fossil fuel production despite climate pledges, report says (apnews.com)

Despite frequent and devastating heat waves, droughts, floods and fire, major fossil fuel-producing countries still plan to extract more than double the amount of fossil fuels in 2030 than is consistent with the Paris climate accord’s goal for limiting global temperature rise, according to a United Nations-backed study...

I truly do think that Islamophobia and the United States having a lot of historical and economic ties to Israel are why we’ve allowed this to go on unchecked for decades.

Public opinion is definitely shifting in favor of Palestine though.

Clbull ,

Mastodon was my first experience of the Fediverse, and I forget which instance I joined. The one I chose chose was nearly empty and it felt like the only active user on there was the server admin. Abandoned it when I saw that the ‘Federated’ feed was completely filled with bots that reposted hentai from Reddit and various imageboards.

I’ve been looking for a Reddit alternative for a while now, but the ones I used before either died due to lack of users (i.e. Snapzu, Hubski and Syzitus) or got astroturfed into ultra white-supremacist cesspools (i.e. Voat and Ruqqus.)

Lemmy improved massively thanks to the Reddit exodus and apps like Boost and Sync being developed. Frankly I hope it doesn’t become mainstream because Reddit went to shit when everybody and their mother was using it.

I, EvaX, humbly submit a toast to Nicholas Alexander for successfully managing to pirate WarCraft III so that he may play Defense of the Ancients.

Congratulations Nick. Enjoy your DotA!

Xbox's new policy — say goodbye to unofficial accessories from November thanks to error '0x82d60002' (www.windowscentral.com)

Xbox’s new policy — say goodbye to unofficial accessories from November thanks to error ‘0x82d60002’::Got error 0x82d60002 on your Xbox accessory? There’s no fix, Xbox is going to block the use of detected unauthorized accessories with its consoles from November 12, 2023.

Clbull ,

There’s still no official word or reports yet on whether XIM or Cronus controller-spoofing mouse and keyboard adapters will be banned as a result of these policy changes, but manufacturers like Brook Gaming who build unlicensed, but fair adapters for fighting game sticks seem to be caught in the dragnet. We’ll be sure to update you on further changes.

I think XIM and Cronus are the reason they’re doing this, especially since the main games on Xbox are shooters.

Cronus allows you to run scripts which give you an unfair competitive advantage, from using exploits and humanly impossible controller inputs to fire weapons ultra fast, to removing weapon recoil, to going auto-prone when you fire your weapon, to quickscoping, to other things.

XIM on the other hand lets you plug in a mouse and keyboard. While this allows you to play games on console that otherwise don’t support M&K controls, it also gives you serious unfair competitive advantages by making the console think you’re a gamepad player whilst giving you superior M&K controls and aim assist at the same time. With a XIM device you can go seal clubbing in console-only lobbies.

My other hypothesis is that they want to safeguard their console from firmware exploits that could bust the security of their console wide-open and allow for software piracy.

Clbull ,

I think the moment that happens, it’ll truly become the year of the Linux desktop.

Over the course of fifteen years, we went from WINE being able to run nothing but World of Warcraft in a playable state, to thousands of games now being playable through Proton with equivalent or even sometimes better performance than Windows.

Valve were wise to put their eggs in the Linux basket, because they’ve evolved Linux as a gaming platform by leaps and bounds. Steam Machines may have flopped but the Steam Deck has sold millions and given developers legitimate reason to support Linux (or at least SteamOS.)

There’s been talk about Microsoft plastering ads all over Windows 11 or making Windows 12 a subscription-only OS. Linux is free, open source and ad-free.

Clbull ,

I assume he meant EVGA. They’re a hardware company that used to manufacture graphics cards designed by Nvidia but exited the GPU market because of unfavorable contract conditions eating into their profit margins.

Plenty of other third-party manufacturers exist like Sapphire, XFX, PowerColor, Zotac, ASRock, Inno3D, Colorful, MSI and ASUS.

As for the main companies that design (and also manufacture) GPU’s: AMD, Nvidia and more recently Intel.

You forgot ‘South East Asian and African women GPS spoofing their way to matching with Western men with the aim of getting a spousal visa in mind.’

That’s what 65% of my matches on dating apps are. The other 35% are fake accounts using photos stolen from a model’s Instagram or Weibo. Unfortunately the mobile nature of modern dating apps makes it far more difficult to run a reverse image search and weed out those fakes. But generally if I match with someone hot enough to look like a model, I’m automatically suspicious.

This isn’t me having a preference. I just don’t want a long distance relationship with somebody who lives 5000+ miles away. Been there, done that.

I used to date a Japanese lady who came to the UK on a student visa to do a foreign exchange year. Our relationship fell apart the moment we finally closed the gap.

Also, I’ve known ladies who have married foreign spouses and the ordeal they’ve been put through by the Home Office to bring their husbands to the UK. I don’t want to have to surrender years of private chat logs to the government and be interrogated for hours because of their crackdown upon mail order brides.

Clbull ,

It was actually OkCupid.

They also did one where they looked at how men and women rate each other on looks, and found that women rate a whopping 80% of men as below average attractiveness.

This was made back when you could rate profiles out of 5 stars.

I once went on a (second) Tinder date in Wolverhampton.

Some random stranger genuinely approached my date’s uni friend and asked her for her Snapchat. She gave it to him.

Less than 15 mins later when we’re in the supermarket, she gets an unsolicited dick pic from him.

Clbull ,

That pisses me off more than anything.

I really wish the FTC would go ham on Match Group and break up that monopoly…

Clbull , (edited )

Coming from somebody in their early thirties who has had nothing but atrocious luck with women in general, I’ve mentally checked out of dating.

Every dating app is now a carbon-copy of Tinder where you can’t pull a lady unless you look like a fucking Chippendale, are above 5’11" tall, have your own property and are sufficiently wealthy. It also doesn’t help that Match Group hold a virtual monopoly over the market, with Bumble as their only credible competition. They literally profiteer from making the experience as miserable as possible so they can sucker you into paying a £40/month subscription.

Match also put the bare minimum into moderating and policing their apps. The sheer volume of love scammers, fake users and spammers shilling OnlyFans pages is massive, and it feels like they really couldn’t give a shit about enforcing their own rules.

Online dating really is that soul-destroying, and the longer I spend trying to use any app, the less it surprises me that the incel, MGTOW and red pill communities are growing, and that people like Andrew Tate and Sneako have such a huge following despite being such garbage human beings.

At the same time I wish there was a better alternative.

Clbull ,

The way I remember them is that POF had a horrendous turquoise website design and looked like a circa-2003 webpage that hadn’t been updated in years, while Okcupid was a lot more competently designed.

Clbull , (edited )

I just realized that I fail at basic maths and counted to 110, not 100.

It’s more of a problem with Okcupid than anything else. Match drove that website to the ground once they acquired it.

Customer Support gifted me a month of Premium half a year ago after a really bad experience I had with another user harassing me. I found out that nearly all of the 100+ likes I had on my Okcupid profile were from ladies who didn’t even live on the same continent as me. They’d just switch cities and countries all the time, then disclose where they actually lived in their profile description.

GPS spoofing is incredibly easy to pull off, and despite it literally being a violation of the site’s Community Guidelines, their customer service team really don’t give a shit. Quote:

Also, your profile details such as age, height, location, etc. must be accurate. We restrict searching and showing profiles based on mutual fit for details like age, location, gender, and orientation for a reason: so that you can find a person who is looking for someone just like you. Changing these details to appear in searches that you would not otherwise is not allowed and will result in your profile being banned.

I logged into my account for the first time in about two months. I still see matches I reported that remain unbanned to this day.

THEY HAVE THE CHEEK TO CHARGE £20 - £40 A MONTH FOR PREMIUM.

It’s not just streaming services that have turned to shit. Society as a whole has been enshittified because shareholders and directors are chasing the dollar.

Reddit started charging out of their butt for API access, and had killed off 95% of third party apps in the process.

YouTube is downright unusable without a Premium subscription or uBlock Origin. Every content creator meanwhile risks demonetization if their videos are too kid-friendly or too inappropriate, and now have to fill half their videos with endorsements for shitty mobile games like Raid: Shadow Legends if they want to break even.

Porn sites are now astroturfed by e-girls shilling their $20/month OnlyFans pages.

Online dating apps are now a carbon copy of one another, are owned by an oligopoly of big corporations and charge you the same price of four WoW subscriptions for basic features like unlimited swipes, seeing who liked you, etc.

Even real life sucks now. Enjoy paying 70% of your monthly income to pay off some filthy rich landlord’s mortgage while the rich continue to snap up properties, all while the wealthy continue to brainwash sheep into voting against their best interests.

Clbull ,

We’re too late to prevent climate change. Our efforts should instead be going towards mitigating the damage that consumerism is doing to our environment.

At this point we need drastic geoengineering and carbon capture solutions.

Clbull ,

I actually agree with parts of this law and think they don’t go far enough.

Tech firms should 100% be held responsible for the content they choose to tolerate on their platforms.

CSAM is a growing problem on apps like X and Instagram. The latter has particularly been astroturfed by accounts that post links to Telegram channels for the purpose of sharing highly illegal stuff.

Another thing I think the law needs to do is target game publishers who allow toxic, defamatory and harassing behaviour on their platforms. Companies like Riot Games, Blizzard, etc should be held far more accountable for policing their games, especially since kids play them.

Clbull ,

Apparently Ofcom are the regulatory body here.

Clbull ,

Hasn’t he learned anything from Wikia/Fandom?

The WoWWiki and RuneScape Wiki communities ditched Wikia due to them plastering the fuck out of their wikis with tonnes of intrusive ads.

Heck, the WoW community had to ditch Wowpedia (WoWWiki’s successor) to found a new wiki because Gamepedia was bought out by Fandom, the company that Wikia eventually became. Fandom ended up pulling the exact same shit soon after.

As for RuneScape, its wiki is hosted by Jagex themselves.

Musk buying Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Foundation would end in financial disaster. Nothing would be stopping people from jumping ship to an alternative.

Clbull ,

The term for subs on Lemmy is burrows, since that’s where lemmings live.

Shit. That’s good.

Clbull ,

A lot of people lost trust in them after they sneakily installed an extension on users’ browsers to promote Mr Robot.

Clbull ,

Brave to me is like an online advertising racket. They push ad-blocking software by default in their browser, then extort companies into using their own ad network to advertise to their users. Brave Ads are of course opt-in and the main incentive of enabling them is to earn BAT (Basic Attention Token) which is their cryptocurrency. In terms of their intrusiveness, they’re like push notifications you get up to six times an hour, and from my experience using the browser, it was all mainly crypto marketplaces and VPN’s advertising.

Compared to 2020, when you could earn hundreds of dollars in a year from frequently being served Brave Ads, BAT isn’t really worth shit anymore thanks to the crypto crash, so the main financial incentive to use Brave is gone.

If you want privacy, Firefox is that way. Or if you absolutely need to use something based on Chromium, everyone and their fucking mother has forked that browser.

Clbull ,

Blame YouTube for screwing over legitimate content creators and forcing them to be paid shills for shitty VPN and mobile game companies to pay the bills.

Clbull ,

Mate, you dropped your tinfoil hat.

I’m from Bristol. Haven’t seen a single Israeli flag or show of support for Israel in this conflict, but I have seen loads of Palestinian flags waved around, and even witnessed a march last week.

I think public opinion has drastically changed in favour of Palestine.

Clbull ,

Fact that it’s even that close when there’s a lot of Western bias towards Israel and with how Muslims are often painted as terrorists by the media is a testament to how badly Israel fucked up.
