Small Things Like These
by
Claire Keegan

One of the best books I've read this year so far. It's a novella situated in a small Irish town in the 1980s, where the Church is much in control over life.

Keegan's writing is the opposite of sensational, but all the more impressive. With beautiful, seemingly simple language she tells the story of what makes life worthwile and the courage to do what is right.

@marjon @MarianHellema @bookstodon I loved all three of those too. I also love hearing Colm Tóibín reading his own work or in conversation, like in the New Yorker podcasts. His way of speaking and his conversational storytelling is magic.

Next up in is this translated novel. Strangers is genuinely one of my favourite ever novels, one of a very limited few I've read twice, and I wish more Yamada was available. Details in the ALT text, including translator, just in case @CiaraNi is watching. 😏📖 @bookstodon

This is a lovely blog post from Hayley at UK-based greetings card business Dotty About Braille showing just what reading has meant to her mum over the years @disability

@sarahmatthews Nice piece. Until I read this, I had never thought about the physical size of Braille editions. 32 volumes is a lot!

“Braille takes up a lot of space, so a 125 page book might be in four or five braille volumes, and as an avid reader, you can imagine how many of those sacks I had in the house at any one time! For example, right now I'm reading River God by Wilbur Smith and that book is 675 pages and comes in 32 volumes in braille.”
