That’s kind of fascinating, never considered what the results of that kind of regulation can bring without anyone even noticing it at the time. Thanks for a good reading topic for lunch!

Quick development will probably spell the end of the internet once AI code creation hits its stride. It’ll be like the most topheavy SCRUM you’ve ever seen with the devs literally incapable of disagreeing.

I was thinking about his stint at McAfee, and I think you’re right. My real question is: will the next company he golden parachutes off to learn the lesson?

I’m going to bet not.

I try not to argue with cultists. Have a day.

It doesn’t help that I’m medically angry 80% of the time for mostly no reason, but even without that this would incense me because I’ve had 40+ users shouting similar uneducated BS at me yesterday thinking that it was personally my fault that 40% of the world bluescreened. No I am not exaggerating.

I have written and spoken phrases ‘No we could not prevent this update’ so many times in the last 24 hours that they have become meaningless to me through semantic satiation.

Thanks for the tip, so glad Lemmy makes it easy to block communities.

Also: It seems everyone is claiming it didn’t affect Linux but as part of our corporate cleanup yesterday, I had 8 linux boxes I needed to drive to the office to throw a head on and reset their iDrac so sure maybe they all just happened to fail at the same time but in my 2 years on this site we’ve never had more than 1 down at a time ever, and never for the same reason. I’m not the tech head of the site by any means and it certainly could be unrelated, but people with significantly greater experience than me in my org chalked this up to Crowdstrike.

Does Linux come out of the box with A/V and firewalls?

On second thought, you’re dismissive little aside just convinced me to excise you from my internet experience for all eternity.

Ta…

From my experience it was more likely to be an accidental overwrite from human error with recent policy changes that removed vetting steps.

It makes me so fuckdamn angry that people make this assumption.

This Crowdstrike update was NOT pausable. You cannot disable updates without disabling the service as they get fingerprint files nearly every day.

This is why I openly advocate for a diverse ecosystems of services, so not everyone is affected if the biggest gets targeted.

But unfortunately, capitalism favors only the frontrunner and everyone else can go spin, and we aren’t getting rid of capitalism anytime soon.

So basically, it is inevitable that crowdstrike WILL be hacked, and the next time will be much much worse.

Does it come preinstalled with an antivirus and a firewall?

Congrats, your actions have slightly made the world worse for everyone to better yourself. Hope you’re proud.

Oh you really have no fucking clue. It’s medical and no treatment has worked for more than a few weeks. it’s only a matter of time before I am banned. Now imagine living with that for 4+ decades and being the butt of every thread’s joke.

A real shame that can’t be considered medical discrimination.

Angry_Autist , to linuxmemes in IT Department's Plan

It’s not, in fact out of the box Linux is SIGNIFICANTLY more insecure than windows.

The thing is, hackers and hack tool makers target the largest market segment to gain the most conversions.

Apple users used to gush about how virus proof they were until they hit decent market share, and then they got plenty of malware.

Same thing with Linux but the real difference is you need a few decades of linux experience to fix anything in a timely manner.
