I'm thinking seriously about getting Google out of my life, and trying NextCloud.

Looking to get a personal account through a managed provider.

Does anyone have any experience with it?

How does it compare to ownCloud?

Any hosts I should look at or avoid?

Any apps I should get for it, or avoid?

Any issues I should be aware of before I switch?

@asklemmy

Aux ,

I trialled the self hosted NextCloud for a while, but the quality of apps is just meh. So instead I bought a Synology NAS. Turned out their apps are actually on par with Google. And you own everything.

voklen ,

Kind of, you can share individual albums so it is possible to share all but one. This may or may not be practical though depending on your album structure.

Another option is to share your entire library but archive the photos you don’t want to be seen.

It would be good of there was an official feature for this but these are currently the two best options.

Hey 👋 dear Linux Community,

I'm still kinda new to Linux (started using this year 😅) I already made it to my main OS, even if I still missing some things which I used on Windows, anyway. What I wanted to ask you guys, what recommendations do you have for Linux Mint (Cinnamon)? In terms of security, optimization, (a way to make the UI looking modern ;-;) and privacy? I would be very interested in what you do guys to optimize your Linux setup :) I'm pretty technical, so there is nothing which could overwhelm me (probaly).

Thx! 🤍

@linux

moinsdix ,

Regarding the UI and the look and feel, I can highly recommend catppuccin as a theme in basically whatever you want. I use it on Mint Cinnamon as well, and find it very good looking!

@const_void It's not about choosing distros in anyway, please read the post before you comment. 🙄

Is there a causal relationship between electricity consumption and obesity, or is it just an illusory correlation❓

@LabPlot @science @dataisbeautiful @health I mean... A bit? But the comparison does come across as "computers make you fat and lazy" which feel a bit aimless.

For those in research or innovation spaces, (including open source),

What is your method for assigning tasks, of different priority and involvement levels.

How do you differentiate between presenting volunteer/open that have one set of quality standards, vs other quality standards for different tasks-roles-responsibilities?

Your worries are perfectly fine. I would say that being open source is what makes Openreads so great. The app is licensed as GPLv2 so everyone can use it and modify it forever. Not like other proprietary apps that the second they stop making profit can be closed with no option to migrate to any other service.
