Books read in August… a mostly blah month… HOWEVER, The Centre and Vampires of El Norte were both excellent!

I’ve been in a bit of a slump lately with so many mediocre-at-best books. This month seems to be looking up, though… here’s hoping!

New week. New Reads!
I accidentally grabbed book 4 of the The Frost Files. So had to go back and get book 1. Really enjoying it.

I'm of course enjoying @pluralistic 's latest. I'm already fuming and hopeful and have highlighted so much of it.

What're you reading?

I finished The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel Van Der Kolk, M.D. I decided that something light was in order after that so I grabbed If Mashed Potatoes Could Dance by Paige Shelton. I think a fun cozy mystery is just what I need right now.

@bookstodon folks, do you listen to audiobooks? If so:

  • Do you have favorite narrators? Or the opposite? Ever started or quit listening to something because of the voice?
  • if you’re talking about a book, do you say you’ve read it?

@lunalein @bookstodon I love a good audiobook! A good narrator can really elevate the listening experience. I loved Jim Dale's reading of the Harry Potter series. I think he's won awards for it? Julia Whelan also does nice work. I think the best overall narration I've enjoyed, though, would have to be Lenny Henry's narration of Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman. It is an absolute treat and I can't recommend it enough.

I consider listening to an audiobook "reading." I don't differentiate.

According to a marketing insert in Library Journal, Leslie Jones ad-libs in her audiobook of LESLIE F*CKING JONES. So yeah. Stellar. Six days away. @bookstodon

Talk about making strange! Everything was askew...

Where were my chalk-marks now, my blocked-out map of moves?

If only I could creep up on the whole of life like this, and see it all from a different perspective...

I stood listening, and seemed listened back to by the silence...

not thinking, exactly, but touching the thought of thought, as one would touch the tender, buzzing edges of a wound.

My review of Keep Her Sweet by Helen Fitzgerald has just been posted at:

https://www.austcrimefiction.org/review/keep-her-sweet-helen-fitzgerald

It must take real writing skill to create a novel around 3.5 of the most unpleasant, conflicted, dysfunctional and frequently flat out awful people you'd ever read about, and make it as compelling and downright fascinating as KEEP HER SWEET.

My is brief/won't spoil, to spread good, great, spectacular far & wide.

🦀The tragic trajectory of WHAT KIND OF MOTHER starts normally enough then veers into waves of horror you'd NEVER imagine. Luckily, Clay McLeod Chapman HAS, & he's written a nightmare that will grab you in its pincers. You'll never look at aquatic creatures in the same way. It's Horror-ific! (Quirk)

@phoenixashes76 @betaquarii @bookstodon I loved James Schmitz when I was younger, especially the stories with Telzey Amberdon a teenage telepath and feisty heroine that guys and aliens frequently underestimated!
