Dutch town throws worlds largest festival. The fesitval is expected to attract 125,000 visitors, and shows how his works live on to this day. They remain classics!

I have appeared in a stage version of some of his work, and once got paid a tiny amount for appearing as an extra in a adaptation. Great stories!

Modern TVs have dimming features that can adjust backlight power in specific parts of the screen, sometimes even at the individual pixel level.

We wanted to see whether adapting BBC content could make use of these features and reduce energy consumption.

Interesting piece from the techie folks at . I hadn’t really considered the number of folks who listen to radio via their smart TVs. Great opportunity to consume less power when Media companies opt to use a darkened background. I imagine the same holds true for and apps as well.

I wonder what the data looks like for Americans listening to audio content on their TVs?Anybody got a source?

The best way to improve energy use in the longer term - is for the to join those on the right side of history.

Stop supporting fossil fuel industries, politicians or the public, by proxy (e.g., stop reporting their non-science rhetoric without critical evaluation)

Either that or just turn the BBC, ITV, etc, off & read a science publication.

I have been massively enjoying this rerun of the radio series on @BBCRadio4 of the much missed + @neilhimself 's genius book .
It's been wonderful to introduce a whole new generation to both Pratchett and Gaiman's work.
A big recommend if you haven't read/heard it.

(Have not seen TV series so can't compare to that)

FWIW, the adaptation of Good Omens is probably my favourite. I have read the book & seen the TV version, but the radio adaptation wins for painting mind pictures & humour. If you are a fan of and haven't heard it, do listen.

Hi, we are BBC News Labs

We’re charged with driving innovation for BBC News. Our team of technologists and journalists explore how new tools and formats affect how news is found and reported.

You can find out more at https://bbcnewslabs.co.uk/ and we’ll be posting here about our work

This account is part of an experiment from BBC R&D in establishing a BBC presence in the Fediverse.

joyandsadness ,

@BBC_News_Labs So can we get the same newsfeed here as the bbc accounts share on twitter or is that to difficult for you? Like news bbc breaking news etc. All that is here in the fediverse are copycat accounts that share random items that are already a day old or more. Oh and hi and welcome. Yes it's a scary place with a maze that can be difficult to get out of but you will learn.

@BBC_News_Labs hi and .
Would certainly like to see various feeds from various areas on your instance.
As well as having this as the instance for any official accounts of BBC presenters etc

Please however note that ballance here is different to outside. What has recently been in your channels in the name of ballance could get your entire instance blocked

Hello to our new followers, which, for the one and only time, is everyone...

We'll be verifying our account very soon, but in the meantime, our top level domain should hopefully help confirm our identity, and we've also written about why we're here on Mastodon, what was involved to get here, and the other BBC accounts you can follow.

Say hi, follow and give us a boost!

Mastodon is easy and fun except when it isn’t (erinkissane.com)

"After my last long post, I got into some frustrating conversations, among them one in which an open-source guy repeatedly scoffed at the idea of being able to learn anything useful from people on other, less ideologically correct networks. Instead of telling him to go fuck himself, I went to talk to about fedi experiences with...

jocanib OP , (edited ) to fediverse in Mastodon is easy and fun except when it isn’t

on Mastodon is a good way to find stuff you wouldn’t see on your own feed. (It’s how I found this article.)

And there are various bots that allow you to follow people on Twitter (birdsite.makeup etc). Although my instance has decided they don’t like that so it’s a bit harder to find them than it was.

But yes, I think the article does a good job of articulating the problems. I hope they get solved because there’s a lot I like very much about Mastodon but it does not have the depth and breadth of content (yet). And hashtags do not work well enough as a replacement for search (I followed to get more news in my feed and ended up with a bit of news and a lot of porn).
