It should be the last resort plan. Cuz if the domain name changes, that’s a new instance as far as Lemmy is concerned. Sure, the instance will hold all your posts and media, but I don’t think new posts made from that account will be associated with posts before the domain name change.
Because you need a way to be reachable over HTTPS for other instances to be able to securely send you updates (new posts/comments/votes etc.), so you need a trusted certificate. While HTTPS does not strictly require a domain name^1^ it vastly simplifies the process.
^1^: It’s possible to get a trusted certificate for an IP address, but not nearly as easy as getting one for a domain. And it’s probably also more expensive than just getting a domain and using Let’s Encrypt to get a certificate.
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., and Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., have been calling state legislators about the map, which could affect control of Congress.
A federal government being willing to enforce the law Reconstruction style and send in federal troops to effect the arrest of these traitors and the unconditional surrender of their government. Anything less is just giving the anti-democratic forces time to get stronger and chip away at more of our society.
At first I was writing a comment to say the Posse Comitatus Act wouldn't allow this, but it seems like the Insurrection Act of 1807 is an exception, and would apply in this instance.
The President, by using the militia or the armed forces, or both, or by any other means, shall take such measures as he considers necessary to suppress, in a State, any insurrection, domestic violence, unlawful combination, or conspiracy, if it—
(1)so hinders the execution of the laws of that State, and of the United States within the State, that any part or class of its people is deprived of a right, privilege, immunity, or protection named in the Constitution and secured by law, and the constituted authorities of that State are unable, fail, or refuse to protect that right, privilege, or immunity, or to give that protection; or
(2)opposes or obstructs the execution of the laws of the United States or impedes the course of justice under those laws.
In any situation covered by clause (1), the State shall be considered to have denied the equal protection of the laws secured by the Constitution.
Edit: I feel compelled to point out that we're not here yet, because the SCOTUS order has a review process for the new voting maps, and if a judge rejects them, the judge can authorize a third party to draw the maps for Alabama. If the Alabama government rejects those third-party maps, then shit gets real.
Currently, activitypub identity is tied to domain name. Mastodon support migration as long as the old domain is still up during the migration process, but AFAIK Lemmy doesn’t even have a process to migrate an instance to a new domain yet.
Someone should tell Lemmy devs and send them a crate of coffee because it’ll be a race to implement domain migration before all .ml domains got shut down.

So basically, if you switch your instance domain, you’ll mess up all your federation network, unless Lemmy devs implement a solution soon.
deploying the fediverse instances-instance communication on top of a mesh-net like yggdrasil, using their addresses as domain names, may be a quick fix without having to change the paradigm
It means anybody who will want to go to site lemmy.fmhy.ml will not load site and would think its down, maybe some will find out on google about it, some are already on multiple instances…
Also all links to lemmy.fmhy.ml are dead/gone now.
Btw the domain *.ml was free as i read, at least they could get some 1-5 USD domain name extension.

This brings a disturbing thought to mind… if an instance domain name like foo.bar lapses and someone else snaps the domain up (or of it gets stolen) can the new controller plop Lemmy on a server and be instantly federated? If so what kind of damage could they do?
Out of curiosity, other than fmhy.ml, lemmy.ml, and lemmygrad.ml, what other Lemmy instances were using .ml domains? Also, how are the latter two still running but fmhy.ml isn’t?
edit: This has triggered a chain of comments I wasn’t expecting. I’d appreciate it if someone can answer on a technical level. Is the latter two using a different registrar or name server which is why it still works for them?
The main story I found seems to indicate that many government communications have been misdirected due to the typo of .ml instead of the intended .mil - reserved for the US military. 🤦♂️ There has been an entrepreneur that holds the contract to manage Mali’s country domain and that’s expiring Monday (24th?). I’m assuming the government is not renewing the contract and will instead be taking over the domains and any related data. He has been collecting some of that data and warning the US government about the issue to no avail…for 10 years.
Control of the .ML domain will revert on Monday from Zuurbier to Mali’s government, which is closely allied with Russia. When Zuurbier’s 10-year management contract expires, Malian authorities will be able to gather the misdirected emails. The Malian government did not respond to requests for comment.
Their contents include X-rays and medical data, identity document information, crew lists for ships, staff lists at bases, maps of installations, photos of bases, naval inspection reports, contracts, criminal complaints against personnel, internal investigations into bullying, official travel itineraries, bookings, and tax and financial records.
ICANN is the body responsible for the gTLD initiative, which gives you names like .social and .world. They are an American non-profit with a multinational committee, handling nearly all of the databases that store our Internet address records, etc., you can be relatively assured that your domain won’t be messed with.
The instances really have no option here than to test out moving their systems to an alternative domain and “bench test” their migration to discover a path that works or a least come to the conclusion to start all over.
The main reason for the Linux operating system not seeing widespread adoption is because of its multitude of distros. Ubuntu, Debian, Arch, Mint… there are just so many choices, just like how when someone asks how to join the Fediverse people will response with “which instance?”...
I disagree. When you create an instance, you want it to be advertised by its name so that people can find you immediately and register. If people are advertising Kbin, Lemmy, or ActivityPub in general, they will find the landing page of the software in question, perhaps reach a list of instances, and in that process there's a good chance they'll bounce because they have no clue what instances to pick. Furthermore, when the network in general is promoted, it does not promote any particular instance with its own culture, which is the lifeblood of a forum. If people get to your landing page, they will immediately see the top posts and people commenting. This is more likely to pique their interest and make them want to be part of the community. After registering, they can still discover that your instance federates and is part of a much larger community.
One thing I’m not clear about is the impact my home instance has on me. I joined lemmy.world and am currently using the connect for lemmy app. I know when I sort by Local it will only show me posts from lemmy.world, but beyond that are there any things to keep in mind?...
If your instance goes down, you lose all you posts. vlemmy.net was an instance and they just vanished recently. lemmy.fmhy.ml just disappeared yesterday, I couldn’t find much info besides a post vaguely mentioning that their domain name got seized by the Mali government (idk why). Besides being shut down, also due to federation issues. beehaw.org has defederated from lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works, meaning you can’t really interact with each other for the most part. Some instances like lemmygrad.ml and exploding-heads.com are disliked by many instance owners due to politics and got defederated so they are sorta on their own island.
Edit: Well… techically, your posts aren’t lost, you can still find them in other instances. But your images are gone since images do not get federated (unless someone made an archive) and you lost the account and any direct messages, and you have to manually check if you want to see any comments to a post that you posted before it got shut down. Just a huge inconvenience.
that should be because lemmy.world did not defederate with beehaw, it only happened one way.
federation is not perfect, it might take a while for posts and comments to sync up so you might be able to see differences because of that. also in a smaller instance you might have to search the community by it’s full name to start federation (if nobody subscribed to that community first from your instance), luckily lemmyverse exists so you can search there first then look it up.

The coming of World War I brought with it a backlash against German culture in the United States. When the U.S. declared war on Germany in 1917, anti-German sentiment rose across the nation, and German American institutions came under attack. Some discrimination was hateful, but cosmetic: The names of schools, foods, streets, and towns, were often changed, and music written by Wagner and Mendelssohn was removed from concert programs and even weddings. Physical attacks, though rare, were more violent: German American businesses and homes were vandalized, and German Americans accused of being "pro-German" were tarred and feathered, and, in at least once instance, lynched.

They shouldn’t have to. Their server is intact, only the server address is unreachable forever.
Like your house still stands, but your street name is suddenly gone from all street signs and maps.
The problem is for the entire ActivityPub fediverse that identifies instances by domain names. If a server moved their domain they had to have a way to broadcast the name change to all the other instances. Mastodon had a way to this; Lemmy has none.
It’s like you getting a new phone number and you have to ask everyone in your contacts to change your number in their address books.
>If a server moved their domain they had to have a way to broadcast the name change to all the other instances.
even if lemmy had a way to do this, doing it for all the users at lemmy.ml would create a large load of federated network traffic between instances, and at the level of a single instance it would cause a lot of database changes (I've heard that the sql schema for lemmy isn't very optimized).
also, as activitypub doesn't prioritize synchronization (unlike git and matrix), there could be a lot of desynchronized state, with the name change of users reaching some instance but not others.
it would be interesting if lemmy.ml really went the clean slate way (and I think the original intention of the devs in running that instance was just to test their code, not to have it become a "flagship" instance), it would sure showcase a valuable lesson in the fediverse…that you shouldn't rely too much on big instances (there is no huge facebook/twitter/reddit-like thing here).

I’m on Sakurajima.social because it was partered with the small anime-oriented masto instance I used previously so it felt like an easy swap and i could trust the moderation policy but my advice is, if you wanna use it like mastodon find a small instance where you can trust the mods and talk to them, and if you want to use it like its own platform (using channels, namely) find the biggest instance that’s catered towards the niche you’re most passionate about. Channels are a big feature sell of firefish for me so being on an anime-centric instance makes a lot of sense for me :)
