We didn’t post this one up! I posted on /r/android shortly before bed and felt it would’ve been in bad taste if we had posted here without discussing with you folks first (I also admittedly slept in, as it’s a holiday today for Canada Day Weekend).
I was actually hoping to reach out to you and Mike to see if you’re interested in joining our mod team on !android. We hope to carry forward the same kind of content philosophy from /r/android prior to our lockdowns, namely discussions and items of collective interest, and avoiding specific, technical support questions that can overtake large communities - and think you both align pretty well with our overall emphasis on keeping it civil and cordial.
For a bit of background on the instance, @cole has been spending quite some time getting lemdro.id setup and optimized for us with a focus on ensuring backend scalability to handle load. The hope was to have an instance where major tech and other subreddits could feel comfortable moving to, without the significant performance issues that could leave folks with bad first impressions (a number of us were around for the waves of migration from Digg to Reddit).
Folks are currently reaching out to their respective mod teams at other large tech subreddits to see if there’s interest in joining Lemmy as well. We also have a number of developers with us exploring opportunities to contribute code improvements and fill gaps within the Lemmy ecosystem (e.g., accessibility improvements, moderator tools, fighting spam), with at least one bug fix already contributed to the Lemmy Github!
If you and Mike are interested, please do reach out! It would be great to have you both. Given Lemmy doesn’t support group PMs or Modmail, let me know if you want to connect somewhere else - I’m on Telegram, Discord, and Element but would be happy to chat anywhere.
So amongst other things I’m on a high dose of valium right now, and things are difficult. Gosh darn it even dressing is an effort (who has two thumbs, didn’t get out of bed/her nightie this morning? And maybe will live in bed forever now? This girl)....
APICO maybe? It’s got some crafting, but is mostly pretty chill, concentrating on breeding bees.
Dorfromantik is relatively mindless. You place tiles and create landscapes. There’s nice music too. There’s a sort of strategy to it, but it’s pretty light. Unlocking new tiles is the main grind. If you wanted a bit more thought involved, just about any turn-based strategy like Civilization 6 should do.
If you want to keep to JRPGs but at a calmer pace than FF7R, False Skies might be up your alley. ARPGs like Chronicon are also low on the intense/concentration scale (although like most ARPGs, you shouldn’t expect much of a story).
But more than any of those, I think Dave the Diver is your best bet. Ocean theme, doesn’t require great concentration (besides the odd minigame), and has a bunch to be taken in at your own pace.
Democrats aren’t the ones rolling back civil rights protections for women and the LGBTQ+ community, flying Nazi and Confederate flags, pretending hate speech and hate rhetoric are legitimate political opinions or beliefs, banning and censoring books that so much as talk about the LGBTQ+ community let alone support it, or hiding behind the first amendment to justify all of this while taking away first amendment rights for everybody else.
Great points, bubbles of fandom being divided over wider political, civil, or national issues seems to be highly prevalent. Agreed I’m sure there’s a minority of shills and bots but their message gets amplified by the “national debate” or what not surrounding whatever topic, it appears to be relatively easy to manipulate large groups of people with very few comments or ideas.
Some users wonder if the dev will be charged for having it still up, others argue Reddit can't charge him without having signed a contract. Everyone is confused as to why the API change hasn't made it inoperable....
The leadership is too much for me. Too many right wing shitbirds with conspiracy delusions, too much open partying with Ghislaine(sp?) Maxwell, and too many mishandled scandals relating to sexual content with minors.
Huffman (Spez) gave some interview where he talks about civilization falling and he’d “be a slaver rather than a slave” (paraphrasing, I don’t have the interview open) which is just wild because he’s scrawny as fuck.
There’s always rumors of an IPO but I feel like the current staff isn’t fit to head a public company and would crumble under wide public scrutiny like on the markets
Agreed. The article describes a criminal trial, but I believe once that's over the victimized couple can sue in civil court, for compensation (not jail time.)
Perhaps this is a dark thought… but I’m wondering what the future Lemmy equivalents to “We did it Reddit!” or “Thanks for the gold kind stranger!” will be....
im pretty certain he is being paid by the saudis to destroy twitter. it's way too powerful a vehicle to be in the hands of the proletariat.
this might sound crazy but ..... this is why kbin/lemmy etc is so important. in about 2 years+ time, there will be a gigantic global civil war as the masses rise up and seek to annihilate the billionaires. the billionaires will hide behind the use of nukes by russia, then china invades taiwan, then WW3, then Biden is cloned, Covid26 arrives, global tsunamis and geostorms, and then the aliens invade. It's all pretty much clear. we need to organise now, to just give 0.5% of our kids a miniscule chance to survive the coming extinction of humanity.
But it would make the Lemmy Civil War so much cooler! Think about it.
“After BeeHaw defederated, several federalists from the Lemmy World Federation, Lemmy ML Federation, and more, have conducted raids on the BeeHawvists.”
Based on the Civil Rights Act of 1964, they cannot discriminate for any reason that is a protected status. However, they can makeup any reason for not serving them. That means some racist asshole could say they aren’t serving the black customer because they were rude or some other made up shit. Thankfully, your political stance is not a protected status.
It’s the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which protects from discrimination from any of the following: race, color, religion, sex, and national origin. Basically anything else is fair game, as far as I understand.
Right. The various Civil Rights Acts in establishing proteted classes in placed of public accommodation and associated case law created a standard whereby there does not need to be, for example, an explicit “No blacks!” sign out front. A demonstrated pattern of refusing to serve black customers was sufficient to run afoul of the laws.
In fact, the discriminatory effect doesn’t even need to be intentional. If the end result of a policy results in a discriminatory result, it too is a violation of the law. For instance, where I grew up down south, whenever you went indoors you took your hat off. It’s respectful and such. Imagine a dining establishment that turned this custom into a steadfast rule – no one is seated while wearing a hat. Seems reasonable right? Everyone is treated the same! Until you refuse to serve a Sikh customer because they refuse to remove their turban. Now you’re discriminating against someone because of their religion, and there’s no overarching reason (safety, health, etc.) that a person can’t eat and wear a turban at the same time.
My personal religion requires me to refuse service to Trump supporters.
These “religious freedoms” cited are completely arbitrarily defined. Anyone can claim they have a religion with tenets that exclude specific groups of people or promote civil rights abuses.
First of all. Thank you for civil discussion. As you say this is weird place to have such discussion, but it’s also true that these jokes often have some kernel of truth to them that makes these discussions happen organically.
So with that out of the way and with no bad intentions on my side:
I’ve noticed you use Dockerfiles and Docker Images interchangeably. And this might be the core of misunderstanding here. What I was describing is that:
Developer builds an image (using Dockerfile or otherwise) on their laptop and then pushes that image to a Docker repository.
This exact same image is then used in CI to do integration tests, scanning, whatever…
If all is good, this image is then deployed to production.
So if you compare sha of the image in production and on developers laptop, they are the same checksums. Files are identical. Nix arrives to this destination kind of from the other side. Arguably in more elegant way, but in both cases files are the same.
This was the promise (or one possibility) in the early days of Docker. Obviously there are some problems with this approach. Like what if CPU architecture of the laptop differs from production server? Well that wasn’t a problem back in 2014, because ARM servers just didn’t exist. (Not in any meaningful way) There’s also this disconnection between the code that generates the image and the image itself, that goes to production. How do you trust environment (laptop) where image is built. Etc… So it just didn’t stick as a deployment pattern.
Many of these things Nix solves. But in terms of “it works on my laptop” what I wrote in previous comment applies. The environment differences themselves rather than slightly different build artefacts is what’s frequently the problem. Nix is not going to solve the problem of slightly different databases because developer is runing MariaDB locally to test, but in production we use DB managed by AWS. Developer is not going to catch this quirky behavior of how his app responds to proxy, because they do not run AWS ELB on their laptop, but production is behind it. You get the idea.
When developer says it works okay on their laptop, what it usually means is the they do not have 100% copy of production locally (because obviously they don’t) and that as a result they didn’t encounter this specific failure mode.
Which is not to say, that Nix is bad idea. Nix is great. I’m just saying that there’s more to the “laptop problem” than just reproducible builds - we had those even before Docker Images.
Hope that makes sense. And again, thanks for civil discussion.
The next years are going to be fun… The world is burning while the fossil fuel industry is chugging along like everything is great as long as you buy enough co2 credits....
The world failed to take action against climate change, now they’re going to be late to take action to the adaptation of civilization to a dangerous environment. Too late to stop climate change, it’s time to think about adapting to a new environment.
Florida has been saying this for decades. Some of the nation and world’s best climate research facilities are in the state. Think NASA, National oceanic and atmospheric administration NOAA, University of Miami’s ocean and climate research is world class etc. The state is almost all at sea level with 800 miles of coastline and an economy that depends on beach tourism so they have a huge incentive to mitigate climate change. “Smart Money” is pulling out of the state already, with major insurance being firms priced out of the market.
You need to remember Florida is a deeply divided state, something like 51/49 crazy/sane ratio, with the loonies narrowly holding the sane people hostage by a handful of votes. There’s 22 million people in the state and most of the ones in civilized areas are indeed sane. It’s the hillbilies out in the sticks that deny climate change. In 2018 for example they voted OUT Bill Nelson, a democratic senator with a history of supporting climate and science, and voted IN Rick Scott, the former FL governor who refused to allow his administration to even use the term “Climate Change.” (Bill Nelson later went on to be the head of NASA which is good but shows you the type of person he is, who FL voted out.)
This all goes to show why you need to listen to this FL meteorologist extra careful, because Florida believe it or not has some extremely bright educated resourceful people that are extremely motivated to fight climate change…but are unfortunately held hostage and muted by the lunatics.
While I understand where you’re coming from, do keep in mind that the same people that can afford to keep chugging along on the same path with only the bottom line in their crosshairs also have enough influence to make sure that once violence starts it gets promptly redirected. And masses of upset people aren’t really coherent enough to keep a single goal in mind.
Hell, if you’ve ever tried to get 12 hungry people to eat lunch at the same time and decide on a place to get it from, you’ll shortly understand what the phrase ‘herding cats’ means. Add to that a random 13th person that just pops up, whose neighbour owns the new lunch place on the corner and just ‘offers other options’ and you can quickly see how getting lunch becomes an exercise in futility.
And if smoke, mirrors and redirection don’t work, civil violence is used as a pretext to intervene with force against protestors.
I honestly don’t believe another French revolution is capable of happening again, ever.
The answer could be voting with your wallet, but remember the ‘no preorders’ crowds? See my point about herding cats.
It’s one thing to have differing views, but I’ve seen enough attempted reddit migrations to be relieved that the popular communities in the fediverse so far haven’t been about crazy racist stuff or other extreme right bullshit....
What I wish for is an open platform where left and right can speak freely to each other in polite discourse
Oh, I see. You're delusional. You honestly think I should be having "polite discourse" with people who either want me dead, or are ok with voting for people who want me dead.
Because, see, what's left? What makes a Republican want to claim to be a Republican other than the culture war bullshit? What do they stand for? They haven't stood for "fiscal responsibility" or "small government" since W was in office. The straight-up write things like "We stand against teaching critical thinking in schools" (see: Texas GOP party platform) into their guiding documents. And you think they're going to have a civil conversation? You think I owe them a civil conversation?
Every server we allow those people on freely will become exploding heads or 4 chan. Go look at r/politicalcompassmemes if you need an example. I don't know how many times we have to watch it happen before you get the picture, or maybe this is your first ever internet community experience. But you're wrong. Their bad-faith rhetoric, carefully-stated death threats, and direct personal attacks will drive everyone who isn't one of them away, leaving only Nazis. If the admins call them out and ban them for that stuff, they'll end up banning all of them and we'll be having this same conversation. If the admins allow their speech, but don't allow us to say "Fuck off, weeb, nobody likes you" without censure, then guess who gets to control the "discourse"? And if the admins don't ban anyone for it, we'll become Voat. Since only the slimiest members of humanity can tolerate that vibe for long, guess who ends up owning the server by default?
You wanna see that shit, you enjoy being called slurs and told to go kys, you are free to seek out the communities who will do that for you. But fuck all the way off with telling me I must put up with it, too.
Oh, I can block them? No I fucking can't. I blocked you days ago, and your shit still shows up in my notifications. So, again, fuck off. If I have to listen to whatever dumb shit spills out of your brain, against my will, then you get to listen to my toxicity.
Are you suggesting that I should have an account on each fediverse instance, just to get all of the content? If so, then what the actual fuck is the point of federation in the first place?
...you... honestly thought... the fediverse... was supposed to be a centralized content aggregator...?
What.... uh, so, what... what do you think the fediverse is?
I'm not an unreasonable person. I just wanna chat, share my thoughts, share what I'm into, without being censored to hell because some perpetually offended people took offense at regular everyday human things, or noticing things going on in society and thinking about what might cause such.
I don't want to send people death threats, I don't care to say the slurs everyone knows are slurs (but fuck you if you're gonna declare regular speech to be a slur, or medical terms to be a slur).
I just wanna be able to talk to people online? why is that so hard for people to accept? Why should I be literally banned from civilization simply for acknowledging the medical science on my own diagnosed medical condition; merely because some perpetually offended morons were offended by science?
Why should I be silenced, simply for wanting to discuss things without blindly believing idiots with money?
Are those exploding-heads guys dicks? sure, probably most of them are. are they correct about what they're saying? I don't know, I'd like to talk to them and hear where they're coming from, and tell them about my own thoughts. why do you feel the need to get in the way of that discussion when you aren't even a part of it? if you don't wanna chat with those guys, why is it so hard for you to just use the block button? why must you prevent everyone from speaking with them?
I genuinely do not understand that viewpoint, and no one who is on the side of "censor everyone" seems to want to explain it. They'd rather just block/censor/ban you and shut down the conversation entirely. why? are you afraid you might be in the wrong?
I don't think you owe anyone anything. I think that you're in the wrong, and are an authoritarian tyrant and bigot yourself, if you try to shut down a conversation between two consenting people who are completely unrelated to you and aren't addressing you. If you don't wish to speak to someone, that's on you, feel free to ignore them or block them. But it says a lot about you if the second you run into a disagreement, or if you think someone's doing something wrong, instead of helping correct their behavior or ideas, you instead shut down the conversation and let them keep doing what they're doing. Do you have no feeling of obligation to help improve society? if not, I'd say that puts you as worse than them. While they may be misinformed or perhaps hateful due to their ignorance, you are openly admitting that you don't wish to improve society. I'd much prefer a misinformed and ignorant group who want to do the right thing, than someone who neglects the possibility of improving society.
Every server we allow those people on freely will become exploding heads or 4 chan.
I thought "reality has a liberal bias" and all that? Surely, if we allow people to discuss, to debate, to converse with each other, and to let everyone speak rather than a few, we should arrive at what is true, yeah? if you're saying people will become conservative after fair uncensored debate and discussion, then surely they are right? No one is asking for 4chan. there's a difference between fair, uncensored, civil polite discussion, and shitflinging slurs around. exploding-heads themselves have a ban on slurs.
Go look at r/politicalcompassmemes if you need an example.
One of the best subreddits for actual discussion between people of differing ideas? I'd prefer if more places where like that, personally. What issue do you have with them? They're a meme sub but the civility there is awe inspiring.
Their bad-faith rhetoric, carefully-stated death threats, and direct personal attacks will drive everyone who isn't one of them away, leaving only Nazis.
I can't say that's ever been my experience in right wing spaces. I've only ever had that experience in progressive spaces. Perhaps what you're experiencing isn't a problem with right wing people, but rather the hostility and polarization between two groups that are constantly at each other's throats because they refuse to hear each other out?
If the admins allow their speech, but don't allow us to say "Fuck off, weeb, nobody likes you" without censure, then guess who gets to control the "discourse"?
Why do you feel that their insults shouldn't be allowed, but yours should? Isn't that unfair? Either we prevent all insults and have civil discussion (my preference), or we allow all insults from both sides. Surely that's fair?
You wanna see that shit, you enjoy being called slurs and told to go kys, you are free to seek out the communities who will do that for you. But fuck all the way off with telling me I must put up with it, too.
The opposite is actually happening here. You are trying to push your content preferences onto everyone else. All I'm saying is: let the users decide. If you wanna block them, go ahead. Craft your own echochamber. But why should you being offended at civil discussion mean that no one else can discuss things?
Oh, I can block them? No I fucking can't. I blocked you days ago, and your shit still shows up in my notifications.
Fair enough. This seems to be a bug then. I agree that should be fixed. blocking should prevent you from seeing the blocked content.
...you... honestly thought... the fediverse... was supposed to be a centralized content aggregator...?
My understanding was that I'd sign up on a single site, and then have access to content from across the federated sites. Not: have to sign up an account on each individual site, and only see that one site's content. Isn't that latter way just a centralized platform? where is the "federated" part then?
What.... uh, so, what... what do you think the fediverse is?
Sign up on one site -> see content from all the sites. is this not the point of the fediverse? are you really saying the fediverse is: sign up on one site -> see only that site's content? because that just sounds like a regular centralized platform to me.

I can’t say they were always as civil as they might be. Even in the late 80s with laserprint copies in vogue, there were folks who thought shouting everything in AllCaps was the way to get their message across.
@BROMETHIUS you may wish to check the pinned message at the top of this community.
This instance was created by the senior mods of r/startrek and r/DaystromInstitute. The original mod of r/startrek is modding here. They’re hoping to attract some of the other Star Trek subreddits to join. The invitations have been made. So far, they’ve decided to keep the number of communities to three in order to let the conversations get going.
Having WW3 and the Eugenics Wars switched in canon would make a lot of sense. Humanity goes to war and ruins civilization, then the augments take advantage and seize part of the planet for their fifedom. Then people like Colonel Green start purging anyone with radiation altered genes in the west as part of a general paranoia over “divergent” evolution.
This kind of Piracy (not to be confused with the whole ship plundering one) is not a crime in most of the World, rather it’s a Civil Law affair, so roughly in the same basket as breach-of-contract.
I suspect the whole “illegal content” stuff is about things like child porn or bomb making instructions, not breach of copyright.
