And it continues on in this fashion. I’m using sys-wine-8.0, but switching to soda-7.0-7 gives me identical results. It seems something is fundamentally broken in the install, but I don’t see how that could be given I installed it via Flatpak.
Compared with people who pooped once a day, constipated participants had significantly worse cognition equivalent to three years more of chronological cognitive aging, the authors found. Increased risk was also found among those who pooped more than twice daily, though these higher odds were small.
This feels like one of those correlation = causation assumptions.
RimWorld sans mods is a great story teller:
My play allowed me to build a big colony within a mountain like in dwarf fortress, then I woke up an ancient terror like in df, but something unexpected happened when two of the remaining settlers, a kid and an old lady where able to escape.
I got them to escape the map, then resettle with almost impossible odds, with just the shirts on their backs, no food, tools nor weapons and the kid's just a kid.
Fast forward some odd 20 hours, their tribe was able to come back and re-take the base.
I haven’t gotten too far (a bit after you unlock your second element abilities) but I agree the reviews seem odd. I think the story so far is decent. The new combat style is not what I’d expect from ff (I miss turn based) but I still enjoyed it. However I think the combat has some depth the game just doesn’t incentivize because encounters are so easy. I read people mention you could do different strategies and playstyles and rack up combos to enemies, but i never found myself using any of that because the combat is so simple you can just do your regular basic attack over and over for every fight and there’s no reward/incentive for not doing that. There’s no items or paths for making a build or strategizing fights. The gameplay feels linear and kind of filler between cutscenes of story. Leveling and gear increases stats but it doesn’t really make a noticeable difference because the game is linear and scales with you.
I wouldn’t say it’s a bad game, but I’m also confused by the super high scores. Also, allegedly they fixed this, but I found myself awkwardly trying to navigate while never using the right analog stick because the camera blur was so bad. Like maybe the graphics are good but I never saw them because every time I moved it was a watercolor painting.
Across this vast Fediverse, I have encountered a trend of people answering questions with esoteric programming language speaking in tongues that I don’t understand, including under my own posts. I am a Boomer when it comes to coding and I am only 27. I don’t even know where I would start to learn it because programming is so...
I fully understand the logic in play here. Been on enough flights out of ORD during the winter where pilots just don’t give a fuck. If you go back to the gate, you will be grounded and nobody is leaving. If you stay on the tarmac “waiting” for as long as possible, there are good odds you get to take off. Pilots want to get out of the airport just as much as passengers do.
There need to be stronger safety regulations to prevent this from happening. But it is very easy to imagine a situation where the pilots didn’t realize how bad it was getting in the cabin and figured “We’ll be given the green light to taxi to a runway any second now”
Seems rather bizarre to me, though it could make sense for some non-technical roles. For developers, seems a bit impractical; much of language documentation is online and odd errors, common and esoteric, are frequently completely absent from docs. This seems likely to require devs to either use unauthorized devices or waste time digging through source (possibly for the programming language itself) to figure things out.
However, the remark about root access makes me hope that there are not people logging into systems at Google as root. A sudoer, sure, but root is a big no-no.
I had the same assumption. Or maybe nobody uses the windows version, lol. I did a Google search and checked the plex forums, nobody was talking about the issue. I just sort of walked away after that.
Still, very odd to make an announcement that’s literally not true. Gotta be something weird on my end I guess?

Not pooping often enough? Jail. Pooping too often? Believe it or not, also jail
I saw someone on Reddit wondering why the community was so sure of Trek going dark again with Paramount not doing so well financially. Seeing the response was unfortunate as most people feel that it might be a bad time for Trek. And I guess it makes sense with the Hollywood strikes as well....
I don’t want to see SNW on TV. I don’t think they’ll have to change the content directly, but they’d have to fit to the 42-odd minute runtime. We’ve had several episodes near and over an hour long. It’s very refreshing to see them making episodes as long as they need to be to tell the story.
Recently I wanted to play a magical combat game and Hogwarts legacy seemed to be mostly what I was looking for so I ethically acquired a copy. Unfortunately even with DRM removed it runs very poorly on my laptop....
Apart from being a sidescroller, it sounds like you might really like Noita.
Divinity: Original Sin 2 also has incredible magic co.bat, but that’s top-down, turnbased tactics.
Or maybe Psychonauts? Not a wizard, but an assortment of ESP powers gained at a summer camp like boy scout badges as you go through the game. 3d platformer. But the powers and their variety are really fun.
And there’s Witcher 3, which is 3rd person. But it’s close 3rd person at least? Might not run on your machine though. Maybe the 1st game might? Though it has its flaws.
For first person… Hmm. A surprisingly tough call. Most of the 1st person games I know have really straightforward battle magic, the wizard game included. Which is kinda weird now I think about it.
The Dishonored games? If you’re okay with steampunk setting (very well done steampunk though!) 1st person immersive sims. Stealth or kill everyone however you like with a nice assortment of magic powers. I’d put this on top of the list honestly. It’s old and stylized enough it might run alright.
Prey, like dishonored, also allows you to learn (optional) magic powers and use them in a variety of situations, but it’s also set in space, if that’s a dealbreaker. 1st person though!
Or the Persona games? It’s not strictly speaking classic wizardry, but it’s definitely magic of a sort, and I think it should run on most anything, especially Persona 4 Golden. But the fights are turn-based strategy. And 3rd person. Goddamn.
Legend of Grimrock? It’s an odd duck, and you learn magic slowly, but maybe it’s the right odd duck for you? First person, real time but you and enemies only move along a grid, old-style dungeon crawler.
You could sell movies for one price in one country, and another price in another, and so on, and so on; the fantasies of those days were a little like a boring science fiction adaptation of the Old Testament book of Numbers, a kind of tedious enumeration of every permutation of things people do with information and the ways we could charge them for it.
Lol, what a burn.
in short, they made unrealistic demands on reality and reality did not oblige them.
When a law can’t be enforced, it’s because it’s either at this extreme, or the other one where it’s easily circumvented or can be broken invisibly.
In fact, there’s that heuristic that we can apply here – special-purpose technologies are complex. And you can remove features from them without doing fundamental disfiguring violence to their underlying utility. This rule of thumb serves regulators well, by and large, but it is rendered null and void by the general-purpose computer and the general-purpose network – the PC and the Internet.
This is so true. The information age is bigger than we even realise, because for the first time in millions of years we stopped making tools and started making layers of abstraction. When my grandma’s computer doesn’t work as intended, she asks if she should buy a new one, which has seemed odd to me but makes total sense in this light. She thinks it’s just a tool; it’s not a tool, not a special-purpose one anyway.
I’m surprised he didn’t mention the possibility of whitelisting at the hardware level, which is what would be really scary. You could do it, make a chip that resets under conditions that can only be avoided with a secret key. Thankfully nobody is doing that yet, and the legislative winds are actually blowing the other way right now, with right to repair in serious consideration.
Funny enough, a lot of the nerds out there like me are actually begging to lock down tech now, because we’re nervous about what motives a seemingly inevitable GAI is going to have. I still maintain it wouldn’t work, because there’s no such a thing as a trusted authority, not long-term anyway. Maybe there’s a benefit to locking advancement down temporarily, but that’s it.
Meloni heads Italy’s most rightwing government since the second world war. Italy’s criminal code punishes with a fine ranging from €1,000 to €5,000 anyone who “publicly defames the republic”, which includes the government, parliament, the courts and the army.

Wow. Ok then…I guess technically he did violate that law and so it shouldn’t matter how fucked up that law is with respect to an investigation being done about it, but can we still talk about how fucked up that law is in an EU country? Yeah I know Italy’s a little bit different and such, but goddamn.
W would have loved to have had something like this when the Dixie Chicks got out of line over Iraq (though his response quoted there seems oddly…reasonable? ehh, fuck W): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dixie_Chicks_controversy
A future change in leadership could very easily lead to it going public and then all the regular bullshit follows. Don’t just assume it’ll always be great; always be ready to jump ship.
I get worried with the amount of gamers who want Steam to be a monopoly. The existence of competition seems to upset some people and it’s really odd.
I still have an active Netflix account (for the odd thing I haven’t yet added to my self-hosted Jellyfin instance), and actually downgraded from the Premium tier to the Basic tier a few months ago when they started cracking down on password-sharing here in Canada.
Even though the Basic tier is “only 720p”, I barely notice the difference in quality since my TV (and a lot of other modern TVs) has built-in upscaling that works surprisingly well. And I’m the type that is really picky about picture quality, particular about codecs and encoding methods, and all that jazz. But I’m really happy that I managed to get onto the Basic tier before they removed it. I was prepared for a clear drop in quality in return for cost-savings, and I was okay with that, but was delighted to find nothing had noticeably changed after switching over.
The Basic tier checks all of my boxes, verifiably:
1 screen at a time is enough
The end result of the video quality I can perceive is perfect
Cheapest plan without ads
Sometimes I even wonder if my TV is even actually upscaling from 720p, or if Netflix is just quietly serving 1080p in reality, but was just continuing to advertise 720p to deter people from the cheaper plan to get them onto a more expensive one, with plans all along to phase this tier out.
My parents, who were previously sharing my account when I was on the Premium tier, ended up getting their own account also on the Basic tier. The net result is that Netflix makes less money off of the two of our accounts combined now compared to the single Premium account we shared before. So in the end, they ended up losing money, and we lost nothing of perceivable value.
I’ll probably end up cancelling our account at some point entirely, and my parents can continue to use their own account without being affected, so the forced split actually saved us all money and made our situations more future-proofed.
Contrary to popular belief, I actually think that the Basic tier could have ended up seeing more uptake in the long-run had people who only needed a single screen and wanted to save money, decided to try it, and notice that the picture quality was more than satisfactory enough, either due to the stream quality being better than advertised in reality, or due to the pretty good upscaling ability of modern TVs. I’m sure word would have gotten around from technically-minded people to the masses at some point, and we would have seen more people switching.
I’m sure Netflix did away with the Basic tier because they knew it could realistically put a dent in their profits at some point.
Culture, movements, propaganda, all odd and complex things. Seeing how things have changed in the last 30+ years in the US (since that’s what I know) and especially the last 10, and how that all came about, gives me a very different perspective about the directions various countries take and how the populous is led there gradually.
I’ve been to Moscow briefly. I know the people there are just people like anywhere. But their reality, like mine, is shaped by information available, the culture, the history.
Rise of right wing craziness to mainstream in USA via right wing media has been a targeted project for the last 40+ years following Watergate. Only now do we see those plans come to fruition in the form of judicial takeover and extreme divisiveness among the populace. As educational institutions continue to be eroded, underfunded, demonized, and subverted there will come a time when the majority of the population gladly accepts its strong man and relinquishes the rest of its freedoms with a smile.
Look, we know System76 laptops are based as fuck. I mean, Coreboot, Open source firmware, PopOS, and a fucking open source mobo in the works, just so fucking based....
@binarious WOW, 4/6 sounds like some higher than average odds, that really sucks. I hope you at least gotten it all resolved, money back, or found what works for you. I had a battery swell up on me a couple years in but that's quite common and expected in my work environment. Extremely easy fix as well as they used a common, easy to source battery.
I've not tried a huge sampling of different ones (3~4), but I've yet to run across a USB-C dock that didn't work for me under gentoo.
The LVFS thing doesn't really bother me as much as the still delayed coreboot/libreboot they're working on. Most people couldn't care less about either of those things, and they're not a show-stopper for me, so it still remains at the top of my very light recommendations list.
You do realise that meat-eaters eat animals that were killed for them to be eaten?
Yup. Animals that lived lives in the first place because they were going to be eaten. Why should anyone have an ethical problem with that? But honestly, I don’t think it’s just “were killed for them to be eaten” to you. I live in a deer population control zone. Hunters have a critical task of preventing deer overpopulation from devastating the area. Got any problems with the venison steak I had last week from deer that HAD to be killed?
Please explain to me how this is more empathetic than posting a meme that triggered some meat-eaters.
More empathetic? Because I’m not an anti-natalist. I know those animals would not have been born if not farmed. This is not a vacuum choice between “cows die” and “cows live”. It never was, and it never will be. I know that most of them live better lives and die easier than their non-domesticated counterparts. Ever watch a cat play with a mouse, slowly torturing it to death? My local farm (plants) have animals that do exactly that every day with the goal of killing off pest animals so they won’t destroy the harvest (a single pest animal like a squirrel can destroy 40 or 50 tomatoes in an hour).
Let’s go another way. Statistically, odds are pretty good that my death will be 100x worse than how a farm animal dies. So no, me being ok that death exists in our world is NOT a lack of empathy. You don’t get to make up my morals for me. The way I see it, giving farm animals a peaceful life is the height of empathy… so I look at you (your words) “triggering some meat-eaters” and note that statistically many of the people you go out of your way to “trigger” are going to end up dying long and painful battles with cancer. My view of empathy? Give them just a LITTLE bit more bloody peace while they’re alive.
Here’s my empathy. I fight for animal right laws. I strongly supported the free range chicken law that just passed in my state. I reject unethical and inhumane ways of treating and killing animals. But I’m not uneducated. I know how farming works. I know how the delicate relationship between agriculture and horticulture, while not perfect, leads to less death and less environmental impact than EITHER side of those alone.
Vegans are letting some crayola-colored dream be the enemy of good. And it’s nothing more than flat-earther, tinfoil, antivax gibberish to me. And I don’t care as long as they leave people alone.
Don’t see why. Everyone doesn’t have that familial bond with pets/animals. If it came down to it I’d eat my pet and I wouldn’t think twice about it. Odds are they’d eat you vs starving to death
