Off the top of my head I don’t remember how much the book of talks about the Harkonnen use of gladiatorial combat, but the movie draws a relatively subtle link between their idea of it and bullfighting - the guys in the wide black hats are like picadors, who stab the bull with lances to weaken it. I’ll avoid spoilers on a 60-year-old book or the new movie, but it’s a fun subtle thing.

Damn, I think that's right. The Shadout Mapes wants to clean the blood off the horns of the bull's head. I'd entirely forgotten. Cheers!
(FWIW, I re-read Children and Chapterhouse recently. Not worth while, IMO; very much less interesting than I remembered. No bullfighting in either.)

I suppose there is a little nod at bullfighting in the way Herbert describes using hooks on a worm to force it to stay on the surface, as well. I'd missed that.

For unknown reasons, and those tax authorities are pretty well know for revoking it wrongly.

Hardware security key options?

I've been thinking about getting a hardware security key and have heard of yubikey before; but I want to see what my options are and if they are worth it in your opinion.
My current setup is a local KeePassXC database (that I sync between my PC and phone and also acts as TOTP authenticator app), I know that KeePass supports hardware keys for unlocking the database.

I am personally still of the belief that passwords are the safest when done right; but 2FA/MFA can greatly increase security on top of that (again, if done right).
The key work work together with already existing passwords, not replace them.

As I use linux as my primary OS I do expect it to support it and anything that doesn't I will have to pass on.

PS: what are the things I need to know about these hardware keys that's not being talked about too much, I am very much delving into new territory and want to make sure I'm properly educated before I delve in.

@linux @technology @technology @privacy

Sarcasmo220 ,

When I did some research on hardware keys I was between Yubikey and Nitrokey. I ended up going with Yubikey because KeepassXC supported it.

Something to keep in mind is purchasing a backup key. I bought one for my wife and we use each other’s as a backup.

For KeepassXC it does not support registering multiple keys (at least not that I have figured out), so I have a copy of my database where it uses my wife’s key as a backup.

I use Yubikey 5 NFC and Canokey Pigeon, both works out of box on Linux.

@elonjet To the UFO mothership that showed up over Alaska way back in 1986, this is your call to return to the same place on Earth and mess with this plane. This time, more directly.

Definitely won't be playing Star Wars Outlaws on day one... and may not buy it at all. Ubisoft can kick rocks with this pricing AND season pass.

However, I do sincerely apologize for not reading past that first sentence. Take care.

I hear you! Due to their greed, bland games, push for people to use Ubisoft Connect and subscriptions; I am a screw Ubisoft kind of person these days. I have some of their old games, but I can't be arsed to own any of their newer titles unless it's a DEEP sale. Like less than 10 dollars after tax. Ubisoft is contributing to the enshittification of games (along with Capcom, EA, Activision Blizzard) so supporting them consistently is not going to happen as it's just me asking to be punished via their greed.

"Hard times are coming, when we’ll be wanting the voices of writers who can see alternatives to how we live now, can see through our fear-stricken society and its obsessive technologies to other ways of being, and even imagine real grounds for hope. We’ll need writers who can remember freedom — poets, visionaries — realists of a larger reality."

Hey, question, I'd like to hear from people who are autistic or with ADHD, especially people of color — what are your thoughts on self-diagnosis? I've seen some insistence that self-diagnosis harms the autism community, for example, but I could've sworn I saw arguments about the opposite.

Asking genuinely because I want to learn, as I'm not autistic.

and adjacent people, I'm looking for reading recs on scifi + "capital S monolithic Science" as religion/pseudoreligion

not looking for the actual historical ties between religious institutions and research disciplines (tho I won't be mad if you share those too)

looking more for stuff like... how we went from early scifi tales and allegories at a time when many disciplines and methods where only starting out, to the rampant Scientism and TESCREALism of today... how that's played into technocracy and modulated colonial narratives and education and actual R&D initiatives and etc...

there's tons of individual connections to make between religious narratives and contemporary scifi-treated-as-reality, like general AI as both gods and eschatological prophecy. interested in that sort of thing too

Cash or original form of payment: Airlines and ticket agents must provide refunds in cash or whatever original payment method the individual used to make the purchase, such as credit card or airline miles. Airlines may not substitute vouchers, travel credits, or other forms of compensation unless the passenger affirmatively chooses to accept alternative compensation.
